A strange irony had stuck me today, when I was watching TV, this commercial came on advertising this doll, which stimulates an acutal baby, it talks, and you have to feed it and change its diaper and so on, now toys like this are not exzaactly new I remeber such simillar things when I was a kid, but it struck me as a bit funny in a way if you think of all the discussion and concern out there now about teen pregenancy and trying to find ways to reduce and how young women are getting pregnaent at a younger and younger age, and so on and so forth, and yet at the same time, theese toys, are being produced and advertised for young girls to stimulate and play out motherhood. To me it seems like it is sending a mixed messages. You are putting the idea in these girls heads that they should have babies and be mothers, and having them act out many of the responseablities of motherhood at a young age, and at the same time, trying to tell them they should not get pregnanant when they are entering young adulthood and that the roles of motherhood is really burdonsome for a teenager, and that they should wait untill they are older. The other side to this is the mixed signals in the fact when young girls have such toys in which to play with there really is no "father" in the picture, and yet as these girls start to grow older they are impressed upon with ideas that they should not have childern without a father within the picture to help rasie the child. I am not saying that these type of toys should be banned, or even that they are damaging or harmful really, this is just an observation I have made, and cannot help but to notice the irony in it all.
