Yet another smaple of hypocrisyThere is a sort of contridiction and a sort of almost hyporcisy which has never made sense to me and have always sort of bothered me, and in the wanderings of my mind today I had come to think of it again.
If a man were to decide that he no longer wanted his dog and he went out back and shot it in the head and killed it, a quick painless, near instant death with no suffering, it would be illegal under the laws of animal cruetly and if he got caught he would face a fine and possible jail time, and the story might even make the news and everyone would be horrfied and with good reason, but consider this if that man were to walk into a vets office with a perfectly healthy dog and tell the vet he wanted the dog euthinized simply becasue he no longer wanted it, the vet would be within legal rights to do just that, though I would question the ethics of any vet who would agree to such, in the eyes of the law he would be prefefctly legit to do so.
Now on the other hand if a person were to walk into a hospital and tell the docotor that they no longer wished to care for thier childern and wanted thier childern euthinized of course you cannot do that, it would be strickly against the law, and it would be considered just as much murder if the parents were to kill thier kids with thier own hands. Yet if you think about it minors and pets are not so different if you consider thier situation and rights. Both are in the sole care, and the sole reponseablity of thier parents/gaurdians/owners, and neither have the legal right to make thier own desicions for themselves. And just like an owner can pretty much do whatever he wishes with his pet as long as it falls within the animals protecive servies laws, so can a parent/guardian do whatever they wish with thier child as long as it falls within the child protective servies laws. And personally even though a dog could not verablly express its wishes not to die as a child perhaps could, I still doubt very much that a dog would want to die, if for no other reason then surviail instinct.
And yet the idea of a parent having thier childern euthinized beacue they no longer wanted them would be considered completely ridiculous and outrages while on the other hand, under the eyes of the law it is perfecely reasonable for a person to have thier pet put to death for no other reason then they no longer want the resonseablity. 2:38 PM - 10/2/2006 - post comment
