The New George Washington

Posted in Thoughts
There is a story out now about the fact that according to foresenic scientists the image of George Washting which we are all famillar with might be false, and made him look much older then they claim he really was, using new technology and techniques they reconstructed what they say is how he really would have looked. I have somewhat mixed feelings about this, I do not want to say I distrust the mondern sicence or belive them to be false, but on the other hand I fail to really see the reason or understand the motive of the portiarts and artits of the day to make such a false represenation of his appernce, it was not becasue of thier lack of skill, most portarit artists of the day were very good, and they worked upon comission of if thier clients were not happy with thier work they would not get paird or hired. Not to mention the fact that most portriats that might have some inaccurancy to the real apperence usually lean more towrd the flattering side, to make thier clients look better, handsomer, and so on, not to make them look more aged. So it is a little hard to belive that some mondern thechnology and computer generatated images would prove more accurate then the hand of a skilled aritst who could see what Geroge Washington looked like with his own eyes. I think it is conviicable that the images of him might be false and that perhaps he did not in fact look like that, but I would like some more informaiton explaining the reasons for way the artists would have created a false image, and what it might have been for them to gain in doing so. Or perhaps it was a propaganda ploy on George Washington himself to try and appear more noble and wiser, and more stately by looking older.

Yes!

I saw that too and I'm so glad you brought it up and made the points you did...I completely agree. They didn't have camera phones or 1 hr. photos back then, so I'll bet the artists had experience in portraits. I'm all for modern technology, but, duh, they saw him with their own eyes!! Give me a break!

One more remark about the peanut warning label: on the radio someone said yesterday, that apparently there are people who are so allergic to nuts that a mere trace is enough to cause them to just drop dead. Would this at all change your opinion about these people?

Oh, and is it true that in the US it actually says on hair dryers that you shouldn't use them while under the shower, and that there actually are clothes labels that say that you shouldn't iron the clothes while wearing them?

Who cares what he really looked like? But if that's what artists and forensic scientists want to spend their time doing, why not. In a day and age, where your presidents job is to lead via right decisions to the achievement of things (Daily Show), this is fully understandable. What does worry me, is that there are actually people who are working on reconstructing the face of Jesus Christ. Those are real idiots.
