Paradox of Faith
They
pray to their false gods
dancing around
the fire for the
amusement of those who
watch, thinking they are so smug
self-assured fat cats certain they
have found the right answerers while all else
grovels at the bottom seeking some truth
but they are in for a surprise for the god
you all genuflect to is only
a shadow dancing on the wall
and when it comes to fade you
will all be left standing
with your pants around
your ankles and
not a prayer
to save
you.

I like this tight clincher at end because it forces me
to reconsider the universe the poem narrates. There's
an unmentioned threat below the surface, something
that awaits the fervant idolatars of the shadow on the
wall...these lines are quite eerie:
you
will all be left standing
with your pants around
your ankles and
not a prayer
to save
you.
I love being forced to consider...what do we need
to be saved from? It puts in a Zen koan mood.
Thank you this poem, I hope more are just
around the corner.
