Point of No Return (Conclusion)

Alleandra clung to her brother’s arm as she stood just behind him her eyes fixed upon the man before her. Her other hand still held the album securely. "They are humans just like us. You had no right to do that. You will not get away with this. They deserve to be helped, to have shelter, and food, like anyone else. Not to be cast out like animals. What happened to the, it is not their fault." She pleaded with conviction, but Welkin seemed unmoved.

"You do not understand, we were trying to build a new future, the last thing they needed was to be confronted and reminded of the past, to let that taint in. What we have is beautiful and pure. It was for the greater good." He took an advancing step as he did so Jay backed up with his sister as Welkin came to speak again extending his hand. "Now give me the book, there is nowhere to go, you cannot run, do not make this hard on yourselves, if you just hand it over, we can forget all about this."

"NO!" Jay shouted suddenly as he pushed his sister farther behind him protectively and took a step up. "You have no right to do this." Welkin was about to signal to the others to advance upon them when suddenly Alleandra began to scream at the top of her lungs. It had caught the others by surprise at first even Welkin looked momentarily stunned before he recovered himself and just laughed. "There is no one there to help you, no one to hear you." He then turned to his men. "Now get them. Do not let them get away, and give me that book."

The men once more began to advance and surged forward toward Allendra and Jay when before they could even think about turning to run a figure rushed out from the brush, at first it was only a blind blur, and it charged dead ahead plowing directly into the man nearest to Jay and Alleandra and took him to the ground, then they could see it was covered in fur. It was one of the ape-men. Jay and Alleandra exchanged quick looks, as the other men were taken aback and jumped away in disbelief.

Jay grabbed his sister’s hand and began to charge into the trees tugging her behind, she ran swiftly at his heels. The men behind began to recover themselves, as Welkin could be heard shouting. "Get them! Stop them! Now!" The armed men began to run into the trees after them. The lead man found his way suddenly blocked as another of the creatures stepped just in front of him, causing the man to nearly run right into him, and then others began to appear from the trees barring the way of the men.

Alleandra and Jay could hear the sounds of shouting, yelling, and gunfire as they started to slow up and just leaned back against a tree huddling down in the foliage while they struggled to control their breath as they listened to the fighting though could see nothing of what was going on. Jay placed a protective arm around his sister and just held her close as she leaned against him and they sat there in silence. It seemed to last forever until the jungle would grow quiet again. Jay waited several movements into the silence when he was certain it was over and looked to his sister and motioned her to stay keeping his voice low as he spoke. "I am going to go see what is going on, you stay here, I will be right back."

Alleandra was hesitant at first, but she saw the sense in this, and it would do no good for them both to get caught, and she nodded her head at last though a bit begrudgingly. Jay began to move as silently as possible through the trees to arrive back at the scene, and he could not believe what he saw. The soldiers were all slain, a few of the large hairy bodies could be seen lying dead upon the ground, but the ape-men had been victorious in the end. Jay slowly advanced out into the open and looked around. The others looked to him a few giving low grunts but none of them made any ward him. "We want to help" He said but he did not know if they would understand, it seemed they would not hurt him and he would call back. "Alleandra, it is safe, come out"

She breathed a sigh of relief hearing her brother’s words and she rose to her feet and hurried through the brush to rejoin him, and as she first arrived, she was just as taken as he was. Her eyes swept over everything as she came to stand beside her brother still holding the album in her arms. "We want you to come back with us to the dome. You should not have to live this way. We want to tell everyone the truth of what was done to you."

The ape-men gathered in a small group and seemed to be discussing something as Alleandra and Jay stood watching and waiting wondering what was going on. Until they broke away and it seemed a decision was made. Alleandra and Jay went back with the ape-men to return to their village and after making preparations and gathering everyone together, they would all begin to make the trek back to the dome together with Alleandra and Jay walking side by side. "Maybe this is all they wanted in the first place, for someone to listen, to understand, for the truth to be known." Alleandra said looking up to her brother, still carrying the album in her arms. Jay looked down to her words and kissed the top of her head, glad it was all over. "Yes, maybe."
