Apocolypto

Posted in Movies

I went to see the movie Apoloclypto and I quite enjoyed it and thought it told a good story, but then I was trying to look something up when I came acorss some of the criticims of the movie, and the out rage against it and how it is insulting to Mayan culture, and honostly I think a lot of that is bogus and it just shows the ignorance of the people.

I get that people do not like Mel Gibson, and I get why people do not, I for one thing he is crazy, and I also can accept and have little doubt that the movie likely had some historcial inaccuriecies, and no doubt that the Myan culture was a lot more complex then just the poriton the movie showed. I get all that, I gave a resepct for must ancient cultures, and now they have many different angles and ascpects and so on.

But that being said I think one of the most ignorant and biggist mistakes a person can do is try and deny the fact that they come from a culture with violent history (and I think everyone, comes from a culture with violent history no matter who they are) and I think it is one of the stupidist things to get outraged over someone showing what some might call less flattering aspects of a culture, wheather you agree are not thier are some facts that are not deniable, now perhaps these certain attributes did not have to be highlighted, and perhaps there are many other asepcts of the culter that could have been shown, but the truth still remains, they were a warlike people that belived in gods that demanded a certain blood price to be appeased, and they belived and partook in human sacrifice and slavery.

That is just how it was, you cannot pretend like that part was not real or did not really happen just becasue you do not like it. And I should also like to add, that virtually every culture at one point of time belived in some form of human sacrifce inculding early Christainty.
