The Romantic Cynic
Too many tears have been shed
for lies once told
for pain caused
for a world breaking
Where are the smiles
when love can still be found
when hope still breaths
when still the pieces can be put together
Within the cynic there still
lives a hidden romantic
but there is fear
fear of being hurt
fear of being proven wrong
fear of having to admit
there is still kindness
When sometimes the skeptic
has to reach down inside
and pull out that lost mystic
that never quite died from
days of childhood
To see the world through fresh eyes
to see beauty
to see humanity
to see miracles
Not those made by Gods
or angels
but those we create
with our own hands
working into the earth
to nurture and kneed
Idealism does not make
our problems go away
neither does the pessimistic shield
Sometimes we need to switch places
and open our eyes
to days of dancing in the rain
to the taste of sunshine
to fields of honey-eyed flowers
and the scent of innocence.
