V-Day

Posted in Thoughts

I never had any particularly strong feelings about Valentines Day one way or another, I do not hold any great feelings of dislike or loathing or bitterness for it, nor do I feel any reason to particularly celebrate it or gushy over it or make anything of it really one way or another. I will acknolwege it and but little more then that, and my feelings for Valentines Day are not dependent upon my relationship status, so instead of getting on the band wagon of either sulking about how depressing valnteines day is or how much I do not like it, nor gushing over what a wonderful day it is for love, as seems to be the trend here, I thought I would take a different apporach and tell a little story of some of my valentines day experinces in childhood, and perhaps this is an experince some of you others could relate to.

I remeber those elementary school days when Valentines Day was a dreaded thing, most particuarly when it happend to fall upon a school day, which inevitably it almost always as there are far more schooldays in a year then not. So why was it such a horrid thing which was met with demise and silent rebellion? Becasuse your tearchers, all but forced you to bring Valentines (you know those little cheesy ones made of assorted cartoon or moive characters with those horrible little sayings in them, that were ment to be oh so cool) to school and yes, you guessed it, you had to bring enough for EVERYONE. And then came tha  moment of tourment, in which you had to hand devilver your cards to everyone you had gotten one for. And you know those were those people which it rasied your hackles, made your hair stand on end, and cause your every muselce to recoil from giving one to. It was sheer torture and smillarly were those people whom you were most loathingly repulsed to get anything from. And then when you got home you would go through your Valentines and keep the runs from the people you liked, and throw out if not utterly demolish those which came from those despised few.

Now you might find that the teachers attempts here were of nobel nature to keep everyone on an equal level and prevent anyone from being left out, but then I always found that feel good nonesense to be crap, and though perhaps those choosen loners might have some monitary feelings of inclusions, no one was really fooled under it all. The loners knew those whom would have given to them had it been voluntaiary and those who would not, they knew thier place, everyone knew thier place, and just as well, those loners then had that most horrendous feeling of having to go along passing out thier own valentines to those whom they know do not want anything from them.

And then when it comes around to the next day, nothing has been altered by this forced experinced, everything returns to as it was before, the social fabric was not altered in some mind bending way. No one learned any great lessons which they will take with them. It was something all suffered through equally and were glad to then put behind them.

V-day

I don't like it one bit. I've had more than my fair share of V-day cards and presents, but that doesn't mean I've ever had any meaningful relationships or love affairs... V-day doesn't have this longstanding tradition in my country, and only now it emerges from a day of singles discrimination, to a love festival, although the majority of the Dutch still say, that V-day doesn't hold any special significance to them, and that they love their partner every day of the year, so they have nothing to prove on this one miserable February day.
