Choices

Maud swept into Luca’s room with all her grace and prowess pushing the door closed behind her as she entered the room. She alone was the only one who could get away with intruding upon Luca’s privacy in such a manner for who would dare deny her anything? She had one of those overpowering personalities in which she commanded everything around her fully and completely but all without being overbearing. She was one of the oldest of the blood, one of the remaining of the old generation. A wealth of red hair spilled down her back and her bright green eyes sharply peered out from the slits of her own mask. It was the individual uniqueness of each mask in which the members of the blood could be identified, Luca alone did not wear one, this was as a sign of his leadership that he walked boldly among them, and they could look to him and trust his council.

Luca slowly turned around as she had entered his private chamber, her distinct scent had filled his nostrils before anything else, and a smile now curled upon his lips. Maud had developed her own unique style of dress in which she combined contemporary style with the old world, and somehow she seemed to make it work and quite remarkably. Luca had always had a special fondness for Maud they had known each other and been close confidants a long time indeed he owed her a great deal. "And to what do I owe the pleasure and honor of this visit?" He asked smoothly as his dark eyes stayed upon her studying her, even after all this time, there were parts of her that remained a mystery to him.

She crossed the room and settled herself in one of the comfortable high-backed chairs which made his room; she looked like a queen within her throne, in such command of herself as she sat up straight crossing one of her slender legs over the other. Her arms rested across the arm rests of the chair, a few rings spotted just upon the fingers of her pale yet seemingly delicate hands. Her voice always had something of a husk to it. "You know my dear, I am not going to be around forever, it is nearing my time to depart, it is for the good of the Blood you know, we must keep it strong. It is getting to be time, time for you to make a choice for your mate to bring in the new generation to replace me. It is what keeps the Blood strong, you know this."

Luca was surprised to find her words had carried such a burden to his heart and he realized how truly he would miss her, the last thing he wished was to have to see her go but he knew she spoke true, her council was always wise. He would come to bring one of her hands up just against his mouth brushing his lips against the back of her hand before slowly letting her hand go to drop back down gently. "Ah but if only you were younger, you know you would have been my first and only choice, but then I do not think I could ever let you go. But I should speak not so of the woman whom has been so much like a mother to me." A coy smile played upon his lips he did so love to tease her, and adorn her in flattery of all manners.

Maud would tilt back her head in that throaty laugh of hers a quick smile crossed her lips though unseen, it could be glanced in her expressive eyes. She would bring her hand up and touched her fingers just along the back of his hand before she slid her fingers away. "Luca my darling, do not wave such false temptation within my face, it is incredibly cruel." He leaned over her to place a gentle kiss against her cheek before bowing his head and moving back to take a seat just opposite her own as he leaned back against the chair giving a drawn out sigh as he knew the discussion could not forever be avoided. The humor, though not the intimate tenderness would come to fall away from Maud. "So have you your eye on anyone? Surely you must have known the time was coming, have you given any thought to a worthy candidate?"

Luca would take the time to straighten out and smooth down his suit after sitting before his eyes would meet her own once more. "I think the truer question is, whom do you have in mind. I would find it highly unlike you if you had come in here to give me council on such a matter if you had not already a suggestion in mind."  It was the response she had expected though she was not altogether certain it was the one she had wanted, though she did have an answer ready to give in just such an event. "You do know me too well. There is a young woman with whom has caught my attention, she has a great potential in her I think and would make a fine companion I am certain, there is a fire in her, but I think a certain reason and intellect as well, truly I could see something of my younger self within her. She is of the 7th family.

Luca would listen attentively to Maud’s words and something in what she had said sparked his memory and awakened his senses. "I believe I had a brief encounter with just the lady of whom you speak, I happened upon her just outside, she seemed distressed about something. I do have to admit there is a certain allure about her." Maud knew she should rejoice in the knowledge that he found her advice agreeable, and yet there remained within her this nagging voice as much as she tried to set it aside. "You know I will be sorry to see you leave, it grieves me deeply, and there could be none quite like you again." Luca broke into her thoughts and she pushed herself up to stand though she could not help a light chuckle. "I am not yet going anywhere, you will not be rid of me as soon as that." She would start to walk towards the door before pausing and looking back to Luca "There is one more thing, about your brother, I have some growing concerns, considering the position he is in, he is bound to feel slighted, and you know the kind of personality he is. He does not always think before he acts, and he gets himself into trouble"

Luca could not help but to be amused by her words, and he arched one of his brows as he turned his head to look back to her before giving a low chuckle as he rose to stand up to see her out properly. "Nicoli can be a bit of a hot head, but he is harmless and he would not do anything that stupid, he has always been amiable to me, not to say we have not had our differences."

Maud took a couple easy strides back to Luca to bring one of her hands just against his cheek lightly and gave a gentle shake of her head. "That has always been your only weakness, you speak not from reason but from your heart, you have always clung to just a certain amount of sentimentality, he is your brother and you want to protect him, but he has taken up a certain companionship with one of the initiates a woman of particular reputation." Luca would never dispute her and his hand closed around hers while he would draw her hand down from his cheek and began to walk her to the door. "I will look into it and take your words to heart my dear." He brushed his lips just against the top of her head before opening the door and seeing her out.

Once Maud heard the door close behind her as she began to walk down the hallway she heaved a sigh and just leaned back against the wall. She was a woman who often found herself in constant struggle between her own sentimentality and her sense of duty, though in the end she always choose what was best for the Blood over her own personal feelings it was all the more difficult when her sentimentalities were torn in two different places as well. She had always been found of Luca, she loved him deeply but at the same time, she could not overcome the feeling that she had fed Erila to the wolves. She knew Luca would never hurt her, not truly, not intentionally, and yet she also knew if Luca took her advice Erila’s fate was as good as sealed. She had been a mentor and friend to the woman from the beginning and helped bring up into the Blood and she knew Erila would be good for them, but she did not look forward to breaking the news to her, but a part of her could not allow her to be blindsided, and then there was the matter of Cynthia, whom so desperately wished to be chosen if she found that not only did Maud not put in a word for her, but recommended someone else entirely she would be furious, but Cynthia was volatile and unpredictable and lacked a certain level-headedness and maturity that Erila had, despite her being slightly older.

Maud began to swiftly make her way down the hall, in the end she knew she had done the only thing that could be done personal feelings could not be allowed to interfere what was good for the Blood and what would keep them strong.
