Origins of Words

Posted in Word of the Day

I always find it intresting to discover where the orgins of some words, and how in many cases the words we use today, were preverted in some cases for political and religous reasons, to hold a different meaning then they were originally intended, so I just thought I would give a couple of intresting roots of words which are in common use today that I came acorss.

The word Pundit which as most of proably know today is:  a person who gives opinions in an authoritative manner usually through the mass media. Originated from the Indian term Pandit which was a title of respect for a learned Brahman and was then transformed into Pundit by the English during thier rule in India.

The word thug, today used so commonly as slang word to decribe a gangaster type, or a bully, or the kind of person that uses thier muscle to intimidate others, came from thagi which was said to be a primitive tribe in India who were devoted to the goddess Kail and praticed a custom of ritual murder upon travellers by strangling them.

Thugs

I've done a lecture on thugs once. The tribe from India, I mean. All my classmates were doing speeches on silly subjects like baseball, and goldfish, so I decided to do one on a more vibrant subject, hehe. My classmates all stood in shock and awe, but my teacher was pleased to hear someone speaking about something else. I used to have this book on dark and occult religions, but I misplaced it at some point. Really cool stuff.
