A Step Back

Nicoli stepped into Luca’s study and the door closed just behind him once he was within the grand old room. It did not take long of his gaze to fall upon his brother. He made quite the picture of a stately prince sitting in his throne like chair in his tailor made suit. The man sized hearth crackled with a fire, and the light played just the right way off of his skin to further had to that regal look he had so mastered. It was a bit all too gaudy for Nicoli’s taste, he made quite the contrast to his brother standing in a pair of old faded jeans, a black t-shirt and rock and roll hair. "You wanted to see me?"

Luca’s lips curved into that predatory smile which seemed somehow to be both warm and menacing at the same time, yes Luca was a master at contradicting himself, it was a way in which kept those in his presence uneasy and always guessing thus securing he would always be the one in command. He had a way about him in which made him appear to be completely genuine while at the same time insincere. That is to say, that he always made his guests feel perfectly welcome and there was no doubt he was generally happy to see them, never gave hint of ever being annoyed with another’s presence, but you could never quite shake the feeling that when you were called before him it was for reasons of which you had no understanding so you never knew just which way to step. "Please have a seat" he gestured to one of the chairs just across from him before his arm settled back upon the arm rest of his own char and just the slightest inclination of his head would act as a summons.

From the shadows which stretched just along the high heavy walls, escaping the light of the fire which emitted its soft glow within the core of the room there would come a flurry of movement, and soft muffled sounds perhaps of footsteps of swaying garments as the figures would emerge from the darkness, where they had waited motionless like human statues until called forth. Graceful lithe women who kept their heads down and their eyes adverted to the ground. All of them with long hair in various shades kept unbound keeping their faces half in veil. They were dressed in no more then mere slips of  veneer gowns of colors that were meant to best compliment them, and when they caught just right in the light of the fire one could see perfectly through them to the supple bodies barely concealed within and pale skin for lack of the natural light. Their feet kept unclothed to affect silence in movement. Two of them whom appeared identical, but of the fact one had hair of golden yellow, while the other a brilliant red would come to kneel upon either side of Luca, one in which produced the decanter which sloshed with some expensive red tinged liquid, and the other a fine polished glass of crystal, the drink would be poured almost ceremoniously.

Another, a raven-haired lass would come to Nicoli’s attendance, and in true form, Luca, always thinking of the tastes and pleasures of his guests, and always looking to see them satisfied, the girl would produce a bottle of a nice ice cold beer. Plain and simple and oh so satisfying. Though it seemed almost obscene to Nicoli that such a crass beverage would be presented by such elegance. He would turn his head tilting down just slightly, timing it just right to catch the girl’s eyes, though naturally as the contract was made she was quick to look away.

They were former initiates brought into the lower ranks of slavery; there were two ways in which this might happen. There were those who willfully choose to submit to the Blood, to give themselves over and serve in such a close intimate way. It seemed the world would always be composed of those who took shelter in giving their lives away, and then there were those for whom it was a punishment. The initiates who disobeyed the laws of the Blood, overstepped their boundaries or forgot their place and were stripped of all their privileges to remind them that everything they did have was at the mercy of the Blood, and that they should be grateful for that, for things could always be far worse for them. You could always tell by the look in their eyes, which ones were submissive, and which ones were not and Nicoli duly noted that raven-hair was not here on her own choosing.

Once the drinks were served they would slink back to the shadows always moving backwards never turning their backs to their masters until they seemed swallowed up in the darkness and appeared almost to just melt away. Nicoli only shook his head taking a swig of the bear before looking back to his brother. He had to admit Luca did give him an eerie feeling. "I am sure as my brother you would certainly tell me up front and honestly if you were unhappy about something or displeased in any way. Surely there must be between us some frankness?"

Nicoli was thrown at first by the question as his mind began to race before he caught hold of it, before things got out of hand, years of practiced experience had taught him how to keep his cool with his brother, and he told himself that Luca always did have ways of getting people to confess to things of which he truly knew nothing about just with a careful choosing of words that made it appear as if he already knew the truth of a matter. But was the question truly just a test? Or had something led Luca to be genuinely suspicious? "You know me bro, whatever could I be unhappy about right? I live on top of the world, everything I would wish for just at my feet. What people would pay to be me."

Luca would smile charmingly while he listened to his brother as the glass was brought to his lips and a sip was taken he would let the silence pass between them until the glass was settled fully again upon the top of the table and his hand drawn back to his lap. "Yes of course, I just want to make sure that my brother is happy, you know if you do want for anything you can always simply ask? What could I deny you, my blood?"

Before Nicoli could come up with an answer for his brother he was interrupted by the ringing of his phone, of course he had forgot to turn the dammed thing off before coming in here, it never occurred to him. He would dig into his pocket pulling out the phone as he flipped it open. Sasha, he saw her name and number across the screen. This surely could not be good and why now of all places. He placed the receiver to his ear and tried to act as natural as possible hearing her rushed message he was not given a chance to say a thing before he heard the click of the phone hang up. What happened now? "Listen this has been nice and all, and we will have to catch up some other time, but I got to run"¦..something’s come up." He said as he snapped the phone shut and slipped it away though before he could reach the door Luca would be on his feet and at his side, always playing the role of the gentleman and courteous host. "Yes of course, is there anything I can help you with?"

Nicoli would give a shake of his head trying still to play off casual and not give Luca any further reason to go digging around. "No, I can take care of it." Luca smiled graciously as he would follow his brother to the door seeing him out of the study. He would stand just within the doorway for a moment watching his brother descend down the darkness of the hall which would lead him out of the manor until he would vanish from sight, and not long after the sound of the door could be heard. Luca then slipped back into the study closing the door behind him, a smile resting upon his lips as he glanced down to the device that now sat just within his hand. Bringing it up he flipped the cell phone open as he would redial the last number that had just called his brother but a few moments ago. It seemed Maud had been on to something, not that he should be surprised about that. His brother was being dishonest, and he wondered just what in that phone call could have caused him to be so hasty and who might have called, that is just what Luca intended to find out.

My favorite pace!

It just hit me upside the head, the reason I like
this drama of yours. It's like coming home. You have
the pacing of one of my favorite vampire writers....
the much ignored Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.

I'm drawn in by the mystery of the Blood again,
like always. It's a trusted metaphor, wide enough
for new evaluation, and dark enough for lots of
good, wholesome fun.

Drawn back again, can we preorder chapters
yet? T-shirts? Coffee mugs?

Hehe

Thank you as always for your comments, they are most encouraging, and it is comming as quickly as I can, but having just recently returned to school. As of the start of this month the Spring Quarter has begun, which has taken some of my time, but I will have the next posted as soon as can be done.
