DUI's Killed the Cure for Cancer

Posted in Rants

Sometimes people just do not think about what they are doing, which then makes what could essentialy be a good thing, or at least something with a posistive messeage just turn into a big joke, becasue it becomes so ridiculously stupid you just have to laugh at it.

There was this little anti-drinking and driving ad thing on the tv. And so it starts out showing this woman with her kid get into thier car and start driving down the road and then there is another car they show like heading right for them, and then you just hear the crash and the screen goes black then the boys teaddy bear falls on the grass, and this white wriings comes on the screen, and first it says at the top "It could have been....." and thn it had all thsese nams, like a sister, a brother, an uncle, an aunt, a leader, and so forth, and then one of them was " a cure for cancer" Umm what? If you drink and drive you are going to kill the cure for cancer? Really?

Ok seriously that just does not make even a little bit of sense. Becasue I just do not precive a situation in which, only one single person in the whole world will suddenly have the cure for cancer, and no one else would have that information, never mind the fact that doctors and scientests usually work in teams together, and share information and data, no, the only person who figures it out, all by themself without any help is going to be killed by a drunk driver, and then, no one else will ever again figure out the same informaiton they figured out. It will be lost forever.

Or maybe, there was some convention in which the cure of cancer was found, and everyone who was at the convention just so happend to all be riding together in a bus, none of them flew, or had thier own cars, no, everyone who knew how to cure cancer was on the same bus together, and got in a wreck with a durnk driver and amazingly there was not one single survirior. And appernetly all thier reasearch was also destroyed in the crash with them so no one else could have it.

Seriously sometimes before you just go off and say something because you think it sounds dramatic and scary, you need to work out all the deatils and think, does this really make sense? Or will it hurt my credidablity.

Yeah, cures for bad diseases are usually found by teams from a dozen of university hospitals around the world working together. I'm also one of those people who believe in something called 'sign of the times' (or so I believe it is called). If a cure for AIDS is to be found just about now, it'll be found, even if the first doctor to think of it is killed in traffic. Things are never created out of the blue, so if one doctor interprets existing info one way, another one may very well draw the same conclusions.

Yes, but

if it stops one person from driving drunk....
I think that type of reasoning is called something like counterfactualism. If there were no Robert Jarvik, there probably would have been an artificial heart, but if there had been no Shakespeare, there would probably have been no Hamlet (etc.)
