Speaking for the UnspokenIt is a gerneally common thing for women to quite frequently complain that they find this or that ad to be offesnive and portray women in a negative way, or to complain about this or that commercial, and so forth, and that is not to say that in some cases they do not have a valid point, but one thing you never here or see, at least I have not, is any outcry against advertisments that seem to be in someway or another degrading or insulting of men, and they do exsist, though some women might try and aruge that there is any such thing. Now in part this might be because men are not given to be as easily offended or sensetive to such things, or perhaps, they simply feel that they should not be and feel preassured by sococity not to speak up against such things. I do not know, but at any rate, I personaly am offended by (and that is saying a lot for me, I usually myself do not get worked up by commercials and things of the like) the new line of body wash/body spray commercials out there. Axel is what immideately comes to my mind, though there are others that use the same tatics whose names escape me. But I am not offended by these ads as a woman, I am offeneded on behalf of men, though I do not wish to try and speak for men, I peronsaly find that they are insulting to the intelligence of men and they are degrauding to men.
For those who have not seen these ads or are not famillar with them, the basic idea behind it is that, if you use this spray, young (usually college aged women) who are highly attracitve and skimpily dressed with be filled with uncrolable desire for you and maul you in great numbers wherever you go. And that idea and concept is the whole selling point behind this product.
Sometimes I get the feeling that women feel vindicated in a way, or almost as if it is deserving becasue of thier own trails and tribulations that they have suffered, when it is then turned about against men. This can be seen in TV as well. If there was to come out, some siccome about a woman who just stayed home taking care of the family, and did not have a carreer of her own there would be all sorts of flac about it. And yet there are still countless shows about men who are completely incompatent and unable to raise thier own childern, and made to look as if it was not for thier wives, they would just been sitting in thier own filth starving becasue they could not take care of themselves. And of course on top of this the women also has an ambitions of her own, while the man, also works but that is his sole contribution to the family and the importantce of that is greatly minimilized.
Now I am not saying that these tv shows are evil and bad, and doing any real harm, or that they should be censored, but I am saying there is a very clear and distinct doublestandered here. And if women are fine laughing at men, then they should be equally fine with laughing at themselves. You cannot say that one form of sterotype is ok while the other is a disgrace. 12:29 PM - 6/8/2007 - post comment
