Help the Polar Bears

Here is another letter I got from IFAW that I thought I would pass on

Although much of the attention on the threats to polar bears is focused on melting ice, polar bears have another very real threat to worry about: trophy hunters.

While hunting polar bears for sport is prohibited in the US, a huge loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) permits American trophy hunters to kill and import the heads and hides of polar bears from Canada. The MMPA was intended to restrict the import of marine mammals (and their products), but in 1994 trophy hunting advocates lobbied to remove this protection for polar bears.

It is time to restore the ban on importing polar bear trophies

Ironically, while the US law allows trophy hunters to apply for a permit to kill polar bears in Canada for sport, the administration is also very aware of the threat the bears face from climate change. The US is considering adding polar bears to the list of threatened species in the Endangered Species Act. If polar bears are listed, the species will be protected and "managed" for recovery, an excellent first step toward long term survival for the bears - but not a direct help for polar bears who are now being hunted.

Even if the species is listed as threatened, the Fish and Wildlife Service states on its website that it will work with all interested parties to consider a special rule allowing the continued import of polar bear "trophies" from healthy bear populations!

Your help is needed now to close the loophole on polar bear hunting

Please contact your federal Representative and Senators today and urge them to protect polar bears from trophy hunting. Ask them to support any legislation that will restore the ban on importing polar bear trophies and encourage them to cosponsor the Polar Bear Protection Act (H.R. 2327 and S. 1406) to protect polar bears from this unnecessary sport hunt.

Please follow up your email with a quick phone call. To find your federal legislator’s contact information, go to www.congress.org. When you call simply say, "My name is ___ and I am a constituent of [Representative/Senator]. I am calling to urge [Senator/Representative] to support any legislation that will help to protect polar bears, and to specifically cosponsor the Polar Bear Protection Act, S. 1406/H.R. 2327 to restore the prohibition on importing polar bear trophies. Polar bears already face the critical threat of climate change and we should not allow the additional threat of trophy hunting".

Please pass this alert on to everyone you know and urge them to act now to save the polar bears before it’s too late.
