Mad mad worldI just heard this story on the news that they are tying to say that the playing of viedo games should be considered an acutaly regonized medical disorder, and seen as an addiction, just like being addicted to drugs, and in fact in China, they already have clinics desigend to help people that are said to be addicted to viedo games.
With new technology, that have highly advanced viedo games, giving them not only better graphics, but a more interactive quality, as well as with the interent, and the develpment of RP games such as World of Warcraft allowing poeple to not only interact with the game itself more, but with other players as well, people are spending more and more time playing viedo games, and becasue of this they want to have it labled as an addiction.
Though the way I see it, if that is thier basis, then ever activity and hobby that people dedicate thier time to. The only reason they are trying to have viedo games labled so is because there is already a stigma against games they want to blame games for all of societyes problems. Video games are blamed both for violence as well as obcesisity. People are also against viedo games becasue they beleive they premote anti-social behavior, and whenever a child has little interest in socializing with others, they are automaticaly oustrisized and it is beileived that something most be wrong with them.
But if playing viedo games can be an addiction, that what about people that spend hours in the gym working out and obcesses over body building, or what about people who are only intrested in playing one sport or another and spend all thier time praticing or playing that sport and have little intrest in doing anything. The only reason, no one wants to label them as a medical disorder is becasue these are seen as posistive and socially acceptible acitivities.
And mind you, I am speaking as someone who has not acutally played any of these games, and I am not a gammer, so I am not just trying to defend it becasue I am into it. I am speaking as someone who is outside the situation looking in with no real personal envolvement. 7:25 PM - 6/22/2007 - post comment
