The GatheringWe all know that Hollywood is not the most reliable source for information on any subject, and that they will exploit anyone and anything merely for the sake of turning a quick buck and if they think it will get peoples attention and look good, and ordinarily I am the last person to take anything portrayed in the media in any capacity as serious, and I am not the sort that is squawking about everything and getting offended, in fact I am usually the one making fun of the people who are protesting, and boycotting, works of fiction because of how they are portrayed, and so baring that in mind, and with that being said, I happened to be flipping through the channels looking for something to watch and I am a big fan of horror however b-rate, especially this time of year when there is nothing else on, and yes I have seen countless movies and shows that have played fast and loose with facts revolving around witchcraft and Paganism, and I have scarcely been bothered at it or even blinked any eye, usually I just find their out of date facts to be amusing if anything, but I stumbled upon this mini-series on Lifetime called The Gathering.
The premises of the show is this man wakes up one day to find his wife has mysteriously vanished and his quest to uncover what happened he finds out that his wife was a Witch and that she was summoned to attend this coven, that was one by this so called ancient sect of witches who wished to gain power over the world, at least that is what I read in reviews about the show, as I could not get through the whole thing in my attempts to watch it.
I really think they went over the top in their ignorance and stereotypes with this movie, even for Hollywood it was really quite bad. The way witch craft and Wicca are portrayed in this film is just so antiquated, they really trot out, to the extreme every stereotype type in the book, to the point, where I just could not watch anymore, and I am not the sort to take this sort of thing seriously in most occasions, but well it began to feel more and more like it was made to be a work of anti-witchcraft/Wicca propaganda then being a legitimate horror film.
And in general I really have no problem with Hollywood still casting Witches and so called "black magick" in villainous rolls in their movies, it is their creative right to do so, and there have been many a such movie that I have been entertained by. I understand fiction. But watching The Gathering it really began to make me feel disconcerted, as it seemed to really be trying to hit the viewer over the head with a witchcraft is bad, message.
But I swear even for holloywood, the ideals expressed in the movie are so ridculously anitquatied and much of the information so blatently wrong, mistreprensted or sterotyped, that the film really comes off more as just one big prompaganda against Witchcraft and Wicca, rather then an acutaly horror story. It would be laugheable if it was not so irritating. 9:49 PM - 10/13/2007 - post comment
