Crosswalks

Posted in Thoughts

It never fails to amaze me how people seme to understand the concept of how to use those Walk/Don'Walk pedestrain stop lights at busy street corners and cross walks. Time and time again I have observered, as someone walks up and pushes the button, and then when they do not get instant results they pust the button again, and often will do so two or three more times. Or my faveorite is, when there will already be 2 or 3 people standing at the corner waiting, and yet every new person whom walks up has to go over and push the button, as if everyone else there could not figure that one out, or they are just hagning out having a party on the street corner.

I swear it seems to me as if these people have never used a crosswalk light before and they think that it is some magical button that when they push it, it is acutally going to give them control and comand of the entire grid of traffic and change instnatly for them, and when this does not happen, they become confused, and assume that it most not have registured and so they must press the button again just in case.

So let me help you out here and clue you in on something, the crosswalk light button, does not in fact give you the ability to have control over the streetlights, but it is only a sensor, you push it not to cause the light to change but just to let it know that you are there, so when the apporopirate time does come, it can tell you that it is safe to cross.

Crosswalks

I rarely come across these buttons, but I have noticed the same. Still, there is an entire subculture of jaywalkers in this country, who don't give a flying *** about traffic lights, and I'm one of them. My cue for walking is not a green light, but the absence of cars, and if I need to get to the other side of the street I'll cross it anywhere, not just on official crosswalks.

What's yourposition on jaywalking? I know in some parts of America the authorities are perhaps a bit unfriendly about it. In Atlanta they arrest jaywalkers at gunpoint for instance.

Jaywalking

Jaywalking is frowned upon in America, but it really depends where you are, as it can very from a city by city level, some places do not really bother with it, but others are more strict about giving tickits.

I have no problem with responseable jaywalking, if there is obviously no cars comming, then just going acorss the street.

But when a person steps into the street in front of on going trafic, than the person driving the car ought to be able to just run thier ass over without penelty.

Fair enough

You're right, when I step in front of a moving vehicle, the driver has every right to run me over. That's the lovely thing about my country, though, especially the big cities. Drivers are so intimidated by the many jaywalkers that they don't even try moving when there are many pedestrians around. In a town the size of mine, 17,000 people, you better not cross in front of anything, though, so I won't.
