The Vaule of things

Posted in Thoughts

Sometimes it really is amazing the things that people will acutally attempt, and ultialtey convince enough people to agree to to make it worh thier while.

I saw this commerical on TV advertising this collectionn of 5$ gold coins, and they were selling a set of 5 of them for 99$ and that was not inculding the tax and shipping and handaling which would ultiamtely add up to a little over 100$ all in all.

Now I do not care of they are suppose to be a collecators items, of if the person that buys them would never acutally spend them. Ultimately the bottom line is, they are selling something that has a total monotary vaule of 25$ for a little over 100$.

Sense when is that ever considered a good deal? If someone came up to you and wanted you to exhange a 100$ bill for 25$ in return, well you would say no. So then why would you agree to pay 100$s for 25$s just becasue you call it a collectable and make it into the form of a gold coin?

And yet no doubt there is a percentage of people out there whom will acutally buy the things. Though whoever they are, I would like to know, becasue I have a bridge to sell them.

Gold coins

Ha, my territory. I used to collect coins. Gold coins these days are never meant to be used as money, and their value in gold usually largely exceeds their nominal value. If you'd melt the coins back to gold bars, you'd get the price you paid out of it to, which isn't the case with the normal coins made of nickel. Still, I agree, why would you want to collect gold coins? If you collect coins you might prefer to collect REAL money.

I have come across a golden coin only one golden coin when I used to collect, which is about 11 years ago. I was browsing an album with coins I was interested to buy, up pops a kid right next to me, saying to the vendor, 'Have I got a deal for you, a krugerrand for just 1000 guilders (about 550 dollars at the time)'. The kid claimed that the jeweler's store down the street actually offered more, etc.

The vendor didn't buy the coin, as he suspected the kid had stolen it. A krugerrand (South Africa's version of the Golden Eagle) wasn't worth over 300 dollars in those days, and if the kid had known his coins he would have known that a gold coin is never worth more than its value in gold.

Gold Coins

Thank you for your insight on the subject. And yes I know they are not intended to be spent, but it just funny to think about, paying 99$ for a 5$ coin, or for 5 5$ coins.

The war against death, dear Harry, is always a beautiful, noble, and wonderful, and glorious thing, and so, it follows, is the war against war. But it is always hopeless and quixotic too.  ~Heramnn Hesse
