I think Tim Burtin is an artistic genuis and I absolutely love his work. One of the things which I love the most about him, beside his dark nature of course, is the fact that even though he is in the film bussiness which perhaps sometimes sacrifices art for big bang and box office, Tim Burtin does have the true eye of an artist, he does wonders with his movies, they are filled with a kind of symbolism, and they are like a story book, albeit often more of the dark fairy tale, but richly wonderful. The way in which he pays attention to color, and contrasts, costumes and make up. It really makes his work come to life and is awestriking.
I had just seen Sweeny Tod which I thought was an execlent movie, and I love the Tim Burtin and Johnny Depp pairing, they really are perfect for each other I think, and one of the things that I really loved, was that the movie was really like watching a painting come into life. And the best part is, that he does it all without having to use suooped up animiation technology. He can create an almost animated affect just by understanding how to contrast certain colors together.
The other thing I loved about the movie, is the fact that the story was originally a musical, and in the making of the movie Tim Burtin really did keep a live theater feel to it. There were somethings he did that I really liked it. For example he had some scenes, in which just like in a play all the actors would still be on stage or in this case on set, but just standing perfectly still as if they are not there at all, to give focus to the man actor who has the stage, or that scene. It was a great combination of classical theater elements, and new technology.
