Well I just finnished reading Animal Farm today and all in all it was a pretty good book, though I must say that it seems that Orwell has a very bleak view of the future, I perahps am no optimist but I do not think I near as bad as it seems he is.
But with that aside, I have to say one thing which kind of dissapointed me about the book, though I know that it was ment to be a metaphor, and not to be viewed as litteral, I was still a bit unhappy about the fact that the horses within the book were made out to appear as rather stupid animals, considering that horses are in fact quite intelligent.
I would have to say that I think Benjerman and the cat, whose name I forget were a couple of my faveorite characters though they did not have very large roles. Mostly I liked them for the fact that it seemed they just were going to do what they wanted with little regard for what was going on around them. Though they would not act to change anything, they also were not truly so readily brainwashed or convinved as for them it made no difference they held themselves apart.
I did almost cry about what happend to poor Boxer, though he could not see the truth for what it was, he was truly a nobel animal that was treated in a most cruel fassion.
Reading such books as this and 1984 it does make me currious as to just what Orwell's political views might have been, as it seems he comes off as almost an anarchist for he comes out so stauntly against all forms of government it seems.

I don't think of it as a future novel myself. It's actually a pretty good narrative for all the communist revolutions that took place in the first half of the twentieth century.
It is quite simply a given in modern European history that when the people came to power in a revolution, they always ended up electing even worse leaders for themselves. Right now everything seems fine, but when I look at the sort of demagogues who get increasingly popular in my country and across Europe, I don't think Europeans remember much of the lessons learned from Stalin, Hitler, Ceaucescu, etc.
