Smaller is better

Posted in Thoughts

I am sure that title has raised some eyebrows, or purhaps it is only my corrupt mind going there. At any rate unforutnately or perhaps forutnately depending upon where you stand, I am not refreing to anything so intriguing as what may be implied.

What I am speaking of is technelogy. And the fact that as soon as a new gadge is invented be it a computer, ipod, cellphone, etc... the next step is alwyas instnatly to than try to find a way to make it as small as possible. Really I have never quite understood the obcession people seem to have with owning the smalist device they could possibly get thier hands upon, and how it somehow is a sort of status symbol of coolness just how small your cell, pod, flat screen tv, lap top really is.

Particuarly when it seems in this society, technology is the only aera in which smallness is indee sheek. You must have the biggist house you can buy, the biggist car you can find, but make sure your lap top could fit into a manilla folder envelope, your ipod fits on your pinky finger, and your cell phone can fit into your pocket without leaving a noticable bulk.

I do not really see what the benfit is to have the smallest of the small. I can understand having portable items made at a conevinet size, but I do not think there is anything to gain, other than something to show off, to have said object as small as it can possibly be and yet still funtion.

And well in many cases I think there are certain disadvantages to these miniscule gadgets. For one thing the ipod nano's or minis, or whatever they call them lack certain features that my own, so out of date ipod does have. For one thing on the smaller ipods you have to only use shuffle mode, you cannot choose speficic playlists or songs to here but have to do it completely at random, and than if you hear a song and you wonder, hey what is that song? You cannot just look at your ipod to see if, casue they are too small to have a display screen.

Or what about the cell phones that are so small that the acutaly mouth piece is a mile away from your mouth, which is way people always have to shot on thier phones so everyone else can hear them.

And really, does a paper thin lap top acutally funtion better than a regular sized lap top? Somehow I doubt it.

All I can think about is that old SNL sketch, with Will Farrel I think, in which he is suppose to be some hip fasion desginer zipping aorund on a little scotter, and when he whips out his cell phone, it litterls is like as big as the tip of his pinky finger.

I am not a babie doll, so I really do not need my acceories to look like they were made for babie

Though other ingenious plan behind all this, is the fact that in the world of technology, the smaller they make an object, the more they get to charge you for it.

Interesting observation, well put

LOL, remember calculator watches? Small things break easier I think. Picolos cost twice as much as flutes. I wonder if it's some age old human tendency that's come out of the closet.
