MLAWell this is not the sort of thing I usually talk about, but becasue I feel like ranting about it, I am going to do so. I do not know how many people will know what I am talking about, but I have noticed there are at least a few blogs around here that deal with subjects relating to college.
There is this thing known as MLA format, I have no idea what those letters stand for, and that does not really matter, but basicaly it is a standard universities use for college essay papers, which has guidelines and "rules" of how to do end note, foot notes, citing refrecenes, using qutoes from other works within a paper, and etc. the technological elements of the paper.
Now on the one hand, it makes sense that there would be some basic standard becasue it could get confusing for grading purproses if everyone was doing thier own thing, as well, for people that have not previously had to been exposed to writing such papers it gives them a format to use, and makes the paper more formal.
The problem comes into the fact that for some reason, whoever it is that has created this MLA and whoever is in charge of setting these rules and standards, think that they need to constantly change the rules and regulations, everytime you turn around. It seems like every single quarter once you get use to one system all of the sudden, it is like no, you have to do this that and the other thing now.
Now, I cannot for the life of me understand how that is nesscary? What is the possible benefit for always chagning it? Why cannot they pick a standard and stick with it.
The other thing, which is somewhat off topic, but still related to the subject, is that why from like elementray shcool to highschool, at least around here, I do not know what it is like in other states, if it is the same, but wherever I went to school, teachers always tell you to write your name on the right hand side of your paper, when in college according to MLA you always do it on the left hand side? Why don't highschools just do it that way so you get use to it.
Though in my experince so far, teachers themselves are not too meticuculous if you do not follow the MLA to the letter, if you write a really good paper. 7:59 AM - 5/28/2008 - post comment
