Ghost HouseWell right now I am in a state of both anticipation and trepidation. So what has put me in such a state? Well as you all know by now, I love horror, and I particuarly look forward ot Horrorfest, even if I thought that last years was not as good as the first year. But that is another topic. So there is this new thing out now called Ghost House, which is if you have not already guessed, a collection of what was suppose to be edgey new horror movies that went straight to DVD, though they have not yet been released they will be this month, soon. So I cannot wait to dig my claws into a new venue of horror, yet I fear that they may prove to be B rate, or all about slash and gore.11:15 PM - 10/12/2008 - comments {0} - post commentUnexpected SurprisesSaturday nights can prove to be quite amusing and interesting TV wise, as well often the weakens are completely dead for anything decent on TV, but while I am flipping through the channels desperately looking for something that will do well enough to just play in the background, I often stumble upon some little curiosity that I normally would never have found or watch, but for lack of anything else I figure why not. So tonight I cam across this movie of which I have never heard of before called Nemesis Games, and well so far it does seem to be rather interesting.9:46 PM - 10/4/2008 - comments {1} - post commentLate Night SpecialSince there is never anything on Sunday's I was flipping through the channles to try and find something at least somewhat tolerable to put upon the tv while I sit here at the computer and I happend upon PBS, though I usually never whatch that channel, I stumbled upon this rather odd, quirky looking movie. The sort of thing which I probably normally would not really pay any attention but I am here all by myself with nothing else to do, so I thought it could be kind of fun to watch, and it is quite amusing.
I have no idea what it is. It was already started when I first turnedit on, but in some ways in reminds me of the19th century style Gothic Novels. Though the moive I think is acutally set in the 40's based on the clothing and such, and it takes place in England.
There are these two old ladies, and one of them becomes convinced she saw a murder upon a train but no one will take her seriously becasue there is no proof of anything, so she gets her frineds to help her try and uncover the mystery. And there is this old man who lives in this estate that looks like a Castle almost, and his wife had died, and now he is bitter tword his sons. 9:36 PM - 8/24/2008 - comments {2} - post commentCharlie BartlettI just finnished watching Charlie Bartlett and it was a quirky, fun, witty, little movie. It was about this kid Charlie, who comes from a wealthy family, but his life is screwed up, his dad is in prison, and his mom is a bit of a nutcase and he has to take care of her. After getting kicked out of a serirs of private schools, becasue in his quest to belong and just get people to like him, he ends up getting trouble, he finally ends up in public school.
Of course at first things do not work out so well for him, as he has had no experince with public school before and so he does not fit in there, but he starts to trun things around for himself. He has a natural gift for being able to help other people striaghten out thier own problems and start listening to the kids, when no one else will here them and helping them figure thier lives out. He acts as a sort of amature pychologist using the boys bathroom as his office. Though he is still trying to figure out his own life.
It is not cliche, lame, sterotypical, or just some overworked, and not very good story line as the majority of highschool movies are, but it was quite clever in the way it was done, and rather enjoyable. 9:13 PM - 8/1/2008 - comments {0} - post commentThe Dark KnightI just got back from seeing the new Batman moive, The Dark Knight, and becasue of Heath Ledger it has been getting all kinds of hype, and I hear people go on and on about it and how great they thought Heath was, and that his preformace blew Jack Nickleson out of the water and so on and so forth, but after seeing the movie I have to say I was a little dissapointed.
It was good, and I really liked Batman The Beginning, but I had exepcted a little something more from The Dark Knight, maybe becasue all of the hype, but something about it just did not feel quite there for me, and I was not so convinved that he did out do Jack Nickleson. Though I remeber of course when I first watched the original Batman movies I was quite young at the time, but I remember the Joker in the original movie had left quite the impact upon me, and I think like the first Batman movie better than this version of it. 4:35 PM - 7/26/2008 - comments {1} - post commentUnfair Type-CastingI just got done watching the Seeker, a movie that was made after a young adults fantasy series, though I have not actually read the books, the movie looked good, and it was not bad considering because of the books it was PG, so it was not the best thing ever, but still I enjoyed it, and it had some cool stuff. But there is one thing I take issue with, which is a common occurrence in many fantasy movies and books. It is often the case, that such animals as ravens and snakes are cast in alliance with the evil/dark forces. Wolves are often also used in such a way, but not always and not in this particular movie.
Though on the one hand I can understand why the movies and books tend to do this, and yes it is just fiction, but the truth is, the average or general person cannot be relied upon to use such logical and intelligent thinking in many cases. It is a simple fact that shortly after the movie Jaws came out, there was an outbreak in people killing sharks left and right. Now of course the reason why such animals are so often cast in roles as villains companions is because they are regarded as "creepy" and so many people generally tend to dislike them. But that is just the problem. As most people have rather illogical reasons for disliking such animals, often based on misunderstanding, or misinformation, when they are already ambivalent, to than have the idea that they are somehow bad drilled into them constantly, does not really do the animals any favors. The other problem I have with it, is that many fantasy stories draw upon Pagan ideas, with their use of magic, some of the creatures they create, myths, legends and so on, are taken straight from Pagan belief systems, or heavily influenced by them, but in Paganism such animals as ravens and snakes are often revered as sacred and do not come with negative connotations. So while I for one am not often to take fiction seriously, and if the rest of the human population could be trusted to use such thinking as well, it would not be a problem, yet on the other hand, I do think it would be kind of nice for a change to allow them to get to play on the side of the good guys for a while.
11:39 PM - 5/30/2008 - comments {0} - post commentNightmare ManI have been watching the latest Horrorfest movies, though I have to say, I think the first ones were overall better than the newest set. Nightmare Man was overall a bit cheesy and poorly made, with a bit of a slasheer flick feeling to it, a sort of typical B-Rate horror movie that are rather common, but there was one moment in which the movie captured the element of fear in a way which had to be appericated.
This woman and her husband were driving out on this road in the middle of nowhere, through the wilderness, when the car ran out of gass, it was starting to grow late, and the husband was going to go and see if he could find a gas station, and convinved his wife to stay and wait for him, of course he does not return and now it has grown dark. The woman is strandaded in the car, becasue it has no gass she cannot go anywhere, when she begins to hear things outside, and at one moment while she was in the car, the trunk suddenly starts to open and she hears something moving around on top of the car. It is the perfect moment, becasue there is nothing you can really do. Being inside a car will only offer miminal protection, and she could not drive off, and if you thought something was outside you would not want to get out of the car.
Also I have to say the movie did end with a bit of a twist to it. 10:40 PM - 5/25/2008 - comments {0} - post commentThe Forbidden KingdomI went to see The Forbidden Kingdom today and I thought it was quite the amusing and entertaining movie, as well it did have some great fighting scenes within it. I really quite liked it for the most part. There were a few things though that I was slightly disappointed in. 7:38 PM - 4/26/2008 - comments {0} - post commentIn The Valley of ElahI just watched the move In The Valley of Elah, and at the end of the movie there was this scene that I thought was beautifully symbolic, poetic, and just rung so true to heart for me.
The moive was about this kid Mike who was fighting in Iraq and he was on leave, but when it was time to report back to base he went AWHOL than later it gets discovered that he was killed, and his father who use to be a Sargent in the Millitary Police, is trying to find out what happend to his son, and piece by piece the story starts to unravel, and it gets discovered that his son more or less twisted off becasue of his experinces in the war, and it was about how desenseitized his buddies had all become becasue of what they went through.
So at the end of the moive, the father and his wife have this pagckage that was sent to them from thier son when he was still in Iraq and it turned out to be an American flag which he had when he was in the war and sent it back home to his family. And it was really faded, and battered, and the ends were tattered. So the father takes it to this school I think, though I cannot remeber what sort of building it was for certain, and he strings the flag up and than duck tapes the pully strings to the pole and tells the janaitor, whom he had spoken to before in the movie, to just leave it just like that and not take it down.
Than the camera pans up to the flag, and there battered worn Amercian flag, is hagning upside down. And well I just found this out, for anyone else who does not know, a US flag hanging upside down is an internation symbol for distress. And that moment just hit me, becasue it is so true, this is a broken country. 10:15 PM - 4/12/2008 - comments {1} - post commentThe NinesI just watched his rather interesting and somewhat off beat movie called The Nines. It was a movie about a god whom had began playing characters within his own world and he started to do it more and more untill he got so lost within the world he created that he forgot who and what he really was, and began to beleive that he truly was a mortal man, and began to live in a normal life, but than these strange events start to happen to him. As, it was unclear within the movie, if they were suppose to be other gods, or angels or some other etheral beings, but these begins had come into his world to show him the truth of who he was and try and bring him back again.
The way the movie shot was really quite interesting as well. It was shot in three different parts, and each part showed a different version of his life, or a different character he lived as, but they were all interconected in someway.
It was very quirky, as well as very original and very unique, and I quite enjoyed it. 10:58 PM - 2/29/2008 - comments {0} - post commentKeep your brat at homeIn general I could careless what parents do with thier childern, insofar, that it does not interfer with me in any way shape or form, but today I have come to the conclusion, that I think theathers should have a rule in which they prohbibit childern up to a certain age, what that age should be I have not yet decided, from going to see R-rated movies, even if they are with a parent, or other adult gaurdian.
Though I am not concenred with the fragile minds of childern, nor am I worried about childern being exposed to what could be considered inappropriate mattieral. I do not care what parents let thier childern watch at home, or what games they let thier childern play or whatever, but for the sake of the enoyment of the other patrons, I saw this rule should be put into place.
Yes, my reasons are fully selfish. It a parent cannot get a babysitter, or cannother pay for one, or does not want to, then that is just too bad, wait for the DVD. But as an adult, going to view an adult movie, I should not have to be exposed to someones squalling brat. If I am going to watch an R-rated film, I exepct an adult audieance, granted sometimes even they are not always the most mature, but that is beside the point. I do not want to be annoyed by crying, or babaling nonsnse, or asking, what does this or that mean, or what that person said, or childern running up the asiles, or playing around in the walkway or anything else of that nature.
If I am going to a PG or lower rated movie, than I accepet the fact that I may have to put up with such things. But within the realm of R-rated films I should not have to have any such acceptanace but I should not have to worry about it in the least. 5:53 PM - 2/9/2008 - comments {4} - post commentMovie UpdateWell I said I would keep you updated on this all imporant issue, so just thought I would say, that someone at one of the forum boards I post it a Fantasy Lit. board, thought that would be my best bet for such a thing found the movie I have been looking for, and I was acutally pretty close in my memory of the title. It is called Immortel, I think it might be a forgien film. 9:31 AM - 2/7/2008 - comments {0} - post commentName That MovieOk, well usually I am here looking for some new obsecure song based on vauge lyrics, but this time I am looking for some obsecure movie, with vauge informaiton. One day when I was at the video rental store, I saw this wierd looking movie thier, and I have seen it there a few times, and at first it looked like some sort of sci-fi movie and when I pickied it up one day to look at the back of it. It took place in the future, and it was about this reincarnation of one of the Egyptian Gods, and all thise other weird stuff that I cannot remember, and it seemed like a farily obsecure movie, I do not think it was even in theathers, but one of those that just went right to DVD. So I do not know if anyone has even seen it. But I had thought about renting it but I never did, and so I suddnely began thinking of it again but when I first saw it, it was along the back wall where they keep the new releaseses, but it has been a while so I do not think it would be up there anymore but has probably been moved to the shelves, and now I cannot remember what it was called.
I remember on the DVD cover, it had a picture of this woman and behind her was like this floating cube of some sort I think, and I thought it had either a one word title, or was called The "something" at first I thought it was The Immortal, but when I went to look that up on the Internet Movie Database, nothing came up that looked like the movie I am looking for.
So if that at all sounds familair to anyone, please let me know.
Otherwise I can just randomly browse the Sci-fi section and hope to see it there. 9:50 AM - 2/6/2008 - comments {2} - post commentThere Will Be BloodI just saw the moive There Will Be Blood it was a very artsty film and it was also quite interesting, though I must admit at the end it did have a touch of the feel of pointlessness to it I do think that it hinted at some imporant messages and themes within the film. In some ways for anyone whom might rememeber it reminded me of the James Dean movie Giant.
It was one of those movies, that the previews lead you to belive one thing but then when you see the movie, it is totally different then you had first exepcted it to be. One of the things that I really loved about the movie, was the music. The background music within the movie, I think acutally played an imporant part, it was made a part of the film itself in an artistic way that is not often done. The music was all modern classical, composed music with an orchestra much and in someways reminded me of Vaugner.
Much in the way silent films were once made with orchstra music playing, and in fact it does seem as if there was very little dialouge throughout the film. The other thing I really liked, as at the end of the moive, the cridits were done in a way in which they looked like they were from a program, or a play.
I also could not help but to notice, that there was virtually no swearing throughout the entire moive. Which is unsually for movies today so I could not help but to take notice of that. 7:06 PM - 1/21/2008 - comments {0} - post commentThe Golden CompassI finally got to see The Golden Compass, though I have not read any of the books, I had thought the previws of the movie looked good, and I did enjoy the movie for the most part, now I had mentioned here before the controversy that had surrounded the movie, in the fact that the author of the books is an atheist and it is said he put his views into his work and his books are made for young adults, so when the movies came out a bunch of people were afraid that parents would buy the books for their childern after seeing the movie and then there childern would be corruped or become athiests or some such.
Now I had heard from countless people that claim they saw the moive, say that the movies itself has nothing to do with relgion and how they really downplayed that part of it in the movies, but after seeing the movie, I personaly thought the religious asepct of the movie was pretty blatently obvious, I mean to not see the connection you would have to be pretty dense. I mean they do not call it religion in the book but the metaphor/symbolosim is pretty much screaming at you.
For one thing you have the main power that wants to control everything called the Magestrium, and the building of the Magestrium looks very much like the Vatacan, then you have all these people walking around in what very much looks like priestly robes calling everyone who does not agree with them heretics.
And the whole premisss of the movie is the idea of the battle for free will becasue the Magestrium wants to control how everyone else thinks and how they act. There is this one scene which where childern are being taken, that looks very much like a catholic school where the childern are educated/brainwashed so they can be "purified"
Within the movie, there are several refereance to some ancient mistake that people had made which has left people corruped now, and so they have to try and clense themselves now from that corruption, becasue once upon a time ago a very bad thing happend.
There was also this speach this woman gave in the movie, about how some people do not know what is best for them and so for thier own good they have to be told what to do.
Which to me is the philosophy of Chritianity in a nutshell.
So peraonlly I thought the religious aspects of the movie glowed like a bacon in the darkness. 8:16 AM - 1/3/2008 - comments {0} - post commentSweeny TodI think Tim Burtin is an artistic genuis and I absolutely love his work. One of the things which I love the most about him, beside his dark nature of course, is the fact that even though he is in the film bussiness which perhaps sometimes sacrifices art for big bang and box office, Tim Burtin does have the true eye of an artist, he does wonders with his movies, they are filled with a kind of symbolism, and they are like a story book, albeit often more of the dark fairy tale, but richly wonderful. The way in which he pays attention to color, and contrasts, costumes and make up. It really makes his work come to life and is awestriking.
I had just seen Sweeny Tod which I thought was an execlent movie, and I love the Tim Burtin and Johnny Depp pairing, they really are perfect for each other I think, and one of the things that I really loved, was that the movie was really like watching a painting come into life. And the best part is, that he does it all without having to use suooped up animiation technology. He can create an almost animated affect just by understanding how to contrast certain colors together.
The other thing I loved about the movie, is the fact that the story was originally a musical, and in the making of the movie Tim Burtin really did keep a live theater feel to it. There were somethings he did that I really liked it. For example he had some scenes, in which just like in a play all the actors would still be on stage or in this case on set, but just standing perfectly still as if they are not there at all, to give focus to the man actor who has the stage, or that scene. It was a great combination of classical theater elements, and new technology. 3:05 PM - 12/22/2007 - comments {0} - post commentStrange CircusWell we all know how much I enjoy watching those Japaneese Horror films, espcially when I am alone, so I rented one that I have been wanting to see for a two watch, called Strange Circus and I ordered up a pizza for dinner and plopped it in to watch, and ended up being throughly dissapointed. In fact I ended up turning it off before it was finnished, and a part of me wanted to keep watching thinking, that well maybe the end will really tie everything in and explain it, but the more I watched I just get not get myself to do so, and could not imagine the ending could really be worth it. The more I watched the more watching it felt just like a waste of time.
And it did not really have any redeeming qualtiies to keep me watching, in addition to just seeming like a pointless bad story, the acting was not that great, and it appeared to be a low budget filim and the horror/suspense element of it was not enough to keep me intrigued, and it was just cofussing and hard to follow at points. 6:53 PM - 12/4/2007 - comments {0} - post commentLions For LambsI just got back from seeing the movie Lions For Lambs, which had been getting some bad reviews from what I have heard, but I thought it was really quite good. I think one of the reasons it was getting such bad ratings is becasue it is a very intelligent and intellectual movie, and you know how much people hate to have to think. But I found it to be very thought provoking, but in someways it was left you feeling rather depressed.
The ending was just fabulous I thought.
4:19 PM - 11/10/2007 - comments {0} - post commentShoot 'Em UpI just got back from seeing Shoot 'Em Up, and it was violent, crass, curde, filled with really bad one liners, and completely ridiculous scenes, and virtually no plot, and I throughly enjoyed it. It was really just a silly, fast action and fun film. Not the sort of the thing for everyone but I loved it. If you like action, unique ways to try and shoot people, and carrots (you have to see the movie to get that one) then you will have a good time watching this movie.
There was also something of a vintage feel to the movie, though of course any old movie would not really be that graphic, but it is hard to explain there was just something about it that had a sort of old schoolesque feel to me, which is something that I enjoy.
If you liked Sin City, then I do reccomend Shoot 'Em Up, which I acutally enjoyed better then Sin City, though it did not have the same graphic art as Sin City did, it did have a simallar theme and genre to it. 3:25 PM - 9/15/2007 - comments {0} - post commentSeptember DawnI just saw the movie September Dawn today and WOW! It was really brutal on Morminsism and Brigham Young. I am surprsied there have not been protests considering how much people love to protest things. Maybe there have in Utah, don't know how many Morons there are in this state, or maybe they are just too shamed to protest and do not want to draw any undue attention to themselves. But they are crazy it was really quite frightening, and I always thought Mormonsim was well a bit crazy based on some of the things they beleived, and I never gave it much more criditablity then Scientology. But it was pretty unbealivable, and I know that Hollywood can be liberal with the truth, but most everything the movie dipicted is supported by acutal histocal documentation.
The thing that really gets me thought, is that near everyone, no matter what you beleive or where you come from, there has been some horrible things that happend in your past or history, but the thing that makes the Morons different and sets them apart from everyone else, is the fact in the case of everyone else, they have by now come forward and said, hey that was a really bad idea, and it should never have happend.
The Morons have not so much as acknolweged that they did this (though they cannot out in out deny it becasue the evidence cannot be ignored), but they have given no sign of apology or regeret that it happend and further more, what is really bad, and well kind of sickining, and to me makes them just as guitly was the ones whom acutally did it, is they still worship and revere Bringham Young and John Smith. They still use his teachigns as the core of thier beleif.. And it just makes my skin crawl to think ther is even a University named after him.
And they try and protect him, they cannot deny the fact the the Morons really did slaughter all those innocent people and tried to use the Indians as a scape goat, but they still try and say the Bringham Young had abolutely nothing to do with it. Even though it was his adopted son that led the Morons against the settalers. And they then used his adopted son as the fall guy for htem all, he was the only one who was presecuted for what happend.
The other thing is that these so called relgious people who beleive in God not only slaughtered innocent men, women, and childern whom posed them no threat, and deviced the Indians into helping them. But they did it all for greed. It is a known and proven fact, that not only did the Morons take all of the settalers gold, cattle, and horses, but they acutally stripped each of the individual bodies of the dead, of all thier jewleary and valubale personal poccessions.
It was also unbeleabve how quick and easy these so called followers of God could just lie, lie lie, in order to get what they want, of course that part of it was just the movies portrayl and I do not know if there is any historical documentation to support that fact of it.
If there really were a god, it would make for quite the amusing thought, to think of all those whom were responseable for that event, and who were acutally there and comitted those acts, rotting in hell right now, and wondering, what they hell happend? So sure they would be exalted and go to one of thier many heavens. 9:45 PM - 9/8/2007 - comments {0} - post comment
