Songs of Night

Posted in Poetry
Songs of Night

The midnight music plays a soft serenade
evening whispers have long ago died away
upon invisible wings the notes will fade

Within the moonlight dancing waters still sway
haunting nocturne songs quivering through the air
somewhere a voice begging a lover to stay

Far away silver eyes are lose in their stare
stars speak in silent words no one else can hear
concealed lovers indulge in their affair

before shadows one must not give way to fear
sing sweetly and they are gentle as a deer.

Myself

Myself

Looking into the mirror
tracing flaws that
cannot be seen

I count the lines
in threes
each a wrinkle
in time

Weaving through
the years
mistakes made
debts paid

Waiting uncertainty
reflected back
only to the invisible eye

A map to the soul
crossed
and re-crossed
there is no key
no legend
to make sense of it all

There is only
self-possessed understanding
sins are only
the weaknesses of others

True perfection
is knowing there is no
Good and Evil
only choices made .

Tattered Lace

Tattered Lace

I spasm inside myself
slowly feeling my mind
deteriorate

My brain pounding
as my heart stops
I am sinking
into myself

Feel the grave
around the edges
cold and hard to the touch

A vein pulses with life
how life seems so far away
upon a distant plain

Always alone
my soul splits
torn and twisted
watching the rain
through fallen tears

In silence I wait
for passing eternities
I am Mariana
a dying romantic

Ideals will tatter
covered in cobwebs
while still I gaze
out the window
into the fog.

Winter Lover

Winter Lover

Winter's breath tingling through my hair
felt upon the flesh as it stirs the air
ghostly caresses emerge from the fog
tantalizing touch quivers down my spine
bedded down upon the once virgin snow
icy fingers stroke with a chilled tongue kiss
sending forth ripples of shivering
which vibrates right through the very bone
frozen to the core, left quaking inside
yearning not for warmth, craving only for
my lovers cold touch, as winter takes me
cloaked deep within his invisible mist
together we ascend into darkness
until he is again stolen away.

Poetry is motion
ripples in still water
a word is a pebble
dropped from the sea of thought
to make the calm treble

Poetry is motion
flickering in a flame
with fires dance it sways
filled with burning passion
that never for long stays

Poetry is motion
a stir within the wind
touch of a cool breeze
that can build great power
words that make the world freeze

Poetry is motion
foundation of the soul
a shiver in the earth
with force to move mountains
the dark caverns of birth.

The Dead

The Dead

Dead
they weep
as they sleep
eyeless and bound
within the crypt they keep
forbidden they speak not a sound
the lost that can never again be found
upon black sorrows and misery they are fed
softly, slowly through the mire they creep
with blood and bone they are well crowned
Kings and Queens of the deep
let loose death's hounds
as they sleep,
they weep
dead

Sweet Nightingale

Oh, sweet Nightingale
your voice a silver light
the darkness grows pale

With you my heart cannot fail
through the grayness catch a sight
oh, sweet Nightingale

Held dear as the sacred grail
elixir of my delight
the darkness grows pale

When left so alone and frail
winter winds blow afright
oh, sweet Nightingale

Shelter me from pounding hail
may your warmth hold tight
the darkness grows pale

Upon our dreams we sail
bitter storms we fight
oh, sweet Nightingale
the darkness grows pale

Internation Reading List ~ Update

Posted in Books

A while back I posted a list of books called My Personal Reading List, which was a collection of books gathered from the recomendations of others on Non-American/English liteature. So I thought I would post ratings and prehaps breif reviews about each of the books I have read from that list.

Anna Karnine ~ Tolstoy

Rating: * * * *

I found this to be a rather charming, though not nessciarly happy, and interesting book upon love and relationships, it is the story that looks at several different relationships, and how each individual previces there loves, and thier ideas about relationships, from the devoted faithful young couple struggling through marraige, to the adultress, and a devoted loving wife, with the womanizing husband. This book is very passionate and moving, but it also gives a rather realistic glimpse into life and love.

Madame Bovary ~ Flaubert

Rating: * * *

It starts out a bit slow and kind of dry, in the begining I did not find that the main characters really grabbed my attention. But the second part of the book it does begin to get intersting and the story picks up more. You are introduced to a new set of characters that I find to be all rather entertaining in someways even comical. It is a tragic love story of a young woman Emma who is discontent with her husband, a not very ambitious doctor who is content where he is, and spends most his time away working leaving his wife alone to day dream of a more exciting life.

The Metamorphosis ~ Kafka

Rating: * * * *

This is a bazzar story that is touched by both humur and sadness. It starts out in a rather comical fashion but as the story progresses it becomes more emotional, and yet still a thread of comody prevades throughout. The story is about a pool family who is being supported by thier son, Gregor. When one day Gregor wakes up to discover he had over night metamorphed into a giant insect. Not knowing what to do about him his family at first keeps him locked within his room and with his condition they begin to gradullay decline.

Death in Venice ~ Mann

Rating: * * *

The story is a bit tedious to read, particularly at the beginning, though it does pick up more as it goes along. It is a fairly slow moving story of a more physiological nature. The majority of the story revolves around the mind/thoughts/philosophies of Gustave, the main character. There is not a lot that actually happens in the story as far as physical movement goes. Gustave, who seems to be a man coming to his middle ages, is suddenly struck with the desire and need to travel, and so he goes to Venice, while there staying at his hotel is a Polish family, with a young lad with whom Gustave falls in love. Though he never actually directly approaches the boy, but becomes obsessed and fascinated with the lad and spends his days watching the boy from a distance. I thought that the ending of the story was very beautiful though sad.

The Stranger ~ Camus

Rating: * * * *

I thought this book was excellent. I could really relate to the main character who was the narrator of the story. He stood outside of the normal bounds of socity, and tended to go through life with a rather apathetic feeling. And tended to be emtionally distant. He ended up getting mixed up in some trouble because of a frined of his, and had to go to trial and during the course of the trail he was crucificed becasue he did not experince things in the way that was considered to be proper and normal, and socially acceptiable. As well the fact that he was an anthiest shocked and horrified others, and he was painted to look like some sort of inhuman monster. The book was marvelouslly written, and very provocative.

Youth, Beautiful Youth ~ Hermann Hesse

Rating: * * * *

The prose of Hermann Hesse is stunning and beautiful and it moves so fluidly. I love his work, and I always feel a connection with his writing, as if I truly understand where he is coming from, and as if his works speak to me. This was a wonderful story filled with rich flowing verses. The story is about a young man who was something of a misfit as a child, and as he began to enter manhood, set off on his own in the world. Now on Holiday he returns home a successful business man and has a breif moment to relive some of the moments of his childhood, as well as have some new expeirncess before he must set back out into the world again.

Mona Lisa ~ Alexander Lernet-Holenia

Rating: * * *

It starts out a bit slow, but than it picks up more into an interesting story, upon a subject that is often the topic of discussion, and wonder. Mona Lisa's smile. The story is set in the Renisance, in Florence which is occupied by the French. Becasue the King of France was a lover of art a troup of soiliders by a visit to Leanardo da Vinic, when one of the young Frenchman sees the Mona Lisa he falls in love instantly and demands to know the woman behind the painting. When he discovers the model was the wife of a Nobleman, who has been dead for 2 years, in his love he refuses to beleive she can be dead, and convinces himself of a conspiracy in which the beautiful woman is being held prisoner, and he must resuce her.

Rock Crystal ~ Adalbert Stifter

Rating: * * *

This story has a very fairy tale like aspect of it. In some ways it reminds me of Hanzel and Gretal, but there also seems to be a bit of Lovecraft in some elements of the story as well. Though it is not a horror story, it is more of a story of the sublime. It tells the adventure of two children who on thier way home from visiting with thier grandparents get caught up within a snow storm. It does read a bit slow particuarly at the beginning of the story.

The Bachelor's Death ~ Arthur Schnitzler

Rating: * * *

This is a strange little story, which has a bit of dark humur to it, and a malecious sense of wit and irony. The story is about a Bachelor who died, and he had written a list of all his friend's whom he wanted gathered around him at his death. There were 5 in total but only 3 were able to make it, as many had lost touch with him, they could not understand why they had been choosen. A note written by the Bachelor addressed to them is found, and its contents reveals a secert that connects them all but affects them each in a different way.

Kannitverstan ~ Johann Peter Hebel

Rating * * * *

This is a rather short story, but it must enjoyable to read. It is a mix of humur and sorrow. The story is about a German Journeyman who travels to Ansterdam and a simple misunderstanding in langauge leads the German to enlightement, and leaves him with an unforgettable life lesson.

Krambambuli ~ Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

Ratig: * * * *

In some ways this story made me angry, and I did not completely agree with the message behind the story, but it was quite well written, and it was a good story, even if I was not in agreement with it. It was the story of a dog, and the love of a master. About the importance of the bond between man and mans best frined, and the imporantance of loyalty and obedience, and everlasting feelings of love. It is a bit brutal and sad.

Cardiac Suture ~ Ernst Weiss

Rating: * * *

I do not think this story was written with the intent of being "horror" but it does have a physchological horror asepct to it. For anyone who has seen the movie Awake, parts of it remind me of that.It is about a young woman going through a new recently discovered heart surgery but a problem occurs with the anesthesia, and the story is written, as if from her point of view of hearing everything going on while they are operating.

The Friend in the Closet ~ Herman Kesten

Rating: * * *

This is a very distrubing story and quite dark in nature. It isa story that questions morality. It takes place during the time of the rise of Hitler in Germany, and a German family who is visisted by a Jewish man who was a friend to the fmaily, and who fears for his life. The story deals with the difficult posistion the fmaily is put in, and just what they should or could do, and an event which huants the family.

Zerline, the Old Servant Girl ~ Hermann Broch

Rating: * *

I have to say I did not really care for this story. It seemed long, drawn out, and farily boring. As well though I am sure it was intended to have some sort of moral lesson, it felt a bit pointless to me. The story was about a man with whom has an uncanny ablity for earning money and attracting it too him but he is does not care for the money. So he decdies to go away for a while. An old servant woman in the bording house he is staying begins to tell him her life story which is all about lust, love, revenge, which all sound like it should be exciting, but it does not pan out that way in this story. I fail to see where the woman's story connects with the life of the man whom she decides to tell it to.

Unexpexted Reunion ~ Johann Peter Hebel

Rating: * * * *

This is a rather short story but I liked it very much. It is a story about love that is ever lasting and endures. A love that cannot be eroded by time or death. It is a very moving story, that is touched both in saddness and tenderness. Becasue it is so short, I cannot say much more about it, without giving it away completely.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle ~ Murakami

Rating: * * * *

This was a rather marvelous story. It took on a very surreal quality, and almost dream like. It is quite comical in many reguards, as well as touched with saddness. It followed a rather remarkable journey, and a cast of most unusual characters. I thought it was a very fantastic book and quite unlike anything I have read before.

What Christianity and Communism have in common

Posted in Philosophy
Upon reflection I have come to a conclusion. Christianity is like Communism.

Now what I mean by that is the fact that body might sound like a great ideology, the key were being "ideal" but it is when you throw in the human element that things end up going very wrong, and when things become oppressive, hateful, violent, negative.

I have always said that I never had a problem with the religion Christianity in of itself, but what I have a problem with is Christians, and the two are often very different things.

Both Communism and Christianity on paper might look great but there is just no way in which human beings are capable of practicing either of these systems in their pure form. It is always when someone tries to implement them that they become corrupt. Just the way that whenever a government tries to actually put Communism into practice, they twist it and pervert it into something which it was not originally meant to be.

The way people practice Christianity is really only a perverted form of the religion. It is the human element which taints it and well makes it into something grotesque.

A Dying Rose

Posted in Poetry
A Dying Rose

You watch the rose die
slowly each day
with no reason why
beauty must always
ebb and fade

Yet there is something
beautiful in the decay
regal as a dishonored Queen
it begins to pallor a little more
without complaint or loosing
dignity

When at last
no longer can it stand
there remains frozen
as the Briar Rose
a mask of the splendor
it once possessed

In this last defiance
there beats something
of a true Romance.
