Big fan of Radio 1

Posted by JournalHome.com

In my last job in the UK I used to travel by car on the M1, at the time this was quite a novelty for me as I had always taken the tube to work. Now of course I drive everywhere, (there is no public transport to speak off).
Anyway, what I used to enjoy the most was listening to Radio 1 and Capital radio on the way, and it was not until last week that I though about trying to listen to it while at work.

I knew that they had a live Internet feed, but for some reason I just didn't think of it. Until now...

So for the past week I have been listening to the Chris Moyles breakfast show and Scott Mills, (if you missed scottcam last week you missed radio history).

Anyway, that was my little happy moment at work.

Things here are not going as strong, the political situation has become 'less than favorable', (this is my bosses polite way of saying that the country is heading the same way as most, (all?), African countries.
The wife and I are keen to say here a little longer while the financial storm that is currently hitting the US and UK calms down a bit, but I don't know how long this will last really, (my contract is fairly vague about political instability).

Palin getting too much credit?

Posted by thecolumn
Sarah Palin is getting a lot of praise for her debate performance, but for me as a long time debate viewer since the '92 race I saw nothing that made her edge Biden out.
It was basically a tie, Biden fumbled a bit with his facts about McCain's votes which he was wrong about.
Palin didn't get to the things that I felt she needed to in order to win the debate. She needed to specifically mention that it was the Democratic party which led us to this point of the banks failing. She didn't do that at all.
Biden is a pro at debating, he's been doing it for a long time, but I felt like he was too restrained because she is a woman. He didn't attack her experience and record at all.

For what it's worth to some of my readers, I don't think Palin can rescue McCain out of his pre-destined failure to win this election. She didn't do enough to put blame on the Democrats.

Blog Writing and Sound Bites

Posted by Yankee Innkeeper

I was so frustrated. Yesterday I wrote this piece for my blog and before I had a chance to hit post it disappeared into… cyberspace. So what happens when I spend all this time writing my thoughts and then it goes NO WHERE! Aghhh! By the time all my words went away, I had no choice but to close my laptop and go to sleep.

So now I’m back to writing in a word document and then transferring my thoughts through the old cut and paste method into my blog.  I wish there was a way for my blog master to work on preventing this from happening. I’m sure I’m not the only one. In fact, I tried to post on someone’s blog and after a lengthy thought-provoking response, I was unable to post because I couldn’t read the hidden code so my response went away. No recovering that one. Another “aghhh” out there.

I’ve decided that we live in a world of “sound bites.” No one listens to a complete anything.  All we hear are bits and pieces of a whole and based on that we make life changing decisions.  Wouldn’t it make more sense if we were able to take the time to listen to a complete anything and then be able to make our own decisions based on what we hear not on what someone tells us we should believe?  Our media news comes in “sound bites.” Our newspaper articles are written with highlights, never the complete story.  I worry that we are not taking the time to really understand what is happening in our world.

I think that’s why I enjoy my work as much as a do. I have a chance to really listen and work to understand.  Besides we should tend our own gardens first to create the best of all possible worlds.

The Debates

Posted by thecolumn
I'm not going to write much if the debates remain the way they are, boring and talking points. So if anyone wondered why I didn't write anything, that's why.

Pelosi's intentional Failure

Posted by thecolumn
Nancy Pelosi thought she was clever when she tried to trick the Republicans into the bailout bill that was going to be ultimately a failure.
The Republicans were on board until they saw that all these Democrats start voting No and they start to wonder what is the deal here? Pelosi designed this scheme with her friends in the house to try to pin this on the Republicans and it has worked!
Obama is going to probably win the election because of yesterday's disaster in the market. This bail out is going to only cause more Americans to pay for the banks failings. We have to be happy that this didn't pass yesterday. We need some kind of plan, of course.
But this bailout is going to cost us $1 Trillion Dollars. Who will pay for it? WE are going to.

I am convinced Obama is going to win because of this and that people are going to be more worried about their jobs now. McCain is finished.

New On-line Bible: this raises the standard

Posted by Martin Burch

Well, they have done it. The innovative and hard-working folks at Logos Bible Software have released their on-line Bible, and my tests on it show it to be an outstanding resource. There is a long list of translations available to search (including original language critical texts). I think it is awesome and will be the top standard for what an on-line Bible should be. Check it out! go to http://bible.logos.com

More News from the Road

Posted by Yankee Innkeeper
RJ is on the move again. He is being sent to Cinnicinati, Ohio, from Houston. The good news is he will only be a day's drive away from home. The weather is been perfect for autumn - warm days, cool nights. The colors will be glorious this year. One of my large bushes in the backyard next to the dam is starting to get a brush of red color across the top.  I've deadheaded my geraniums and my marigolds. Pretty soon the potted plants will be finished and it will be time to put the pots away.  Today I put out my fall centerpiece and wreath. My summer and spring decorations are now put away in the basement. I have a lot of organizing to do in the basement.  I have to find a way to store my linenes that do not fit into the current storage cabinets. I started to throw out old programs and files along with carkpet
Tomorrow seems like a good day to file paperwork and add my entries for the Inn to quickborooks.
I am still very tired. This cold really wears me out. It's time to crash. I'll write more tomorrow when I'm feeling better.

Letterman rips into McCain

Posted by thecolumn

David Letterman, who we all know is a far leftist in his political views took shots at McCain for canceling his appearance. Was that fair? I'd say yes to a degree...

But, when you attack someone the way he did it got overboard.

"This is not the John McCain I know, by God," Letterman said. "It makes me believe something is going haywire with the campaign."

"Are we suspending it because there's an economic crisis or because the poll numbers are sliding?" Letterman asked.

We can get a laugh from some of the jokes, but this is purely a cheapshot at McCain.

I don't think I'll be getting any political advice from David Letterman if I ever ran for office.

McCain suspends campaigning for crisis?

Posted by thecolumn

Is this a joke? This is purely political, John McCain is trying to come off as not being political but he is being that. He is a patriot, no question.

He loves this country. This is also a good way to save some money when you might be in need of a lot of contributions. The economy is the #1 issue now and McCain is trying to look like some hero by not putting ads

If anyone thinks this isn't political, you're living on another planet.

I think Obama played his cards right by not accepting McCain's offer to stop putting ads out on both sides. Obama knows that McCain is stalling to buy time to address the Republican failure with the economy.

The real test here is going to be whether people will elect McCain now with his party taking the blame for their failure.

On The Move Again

Posted by Yankee Innkeeper
I just finished my article for Good Life Magazine and I have to admit it was one of my more difficult articles to write. The topic was okay. It's just I don't think about what I do - I just do it. So when someone asks me how to do you make people feel welcomed into your home, I really had to think about it. First, I guess, I enjoy company and people in general so it's easy to entertain. I treat people like I would like to be treated if I was visiting someone. I was people to have the best experience ever and be sad to leave. And I have to admit, some of my guests are sad when it's time to leave. That's the sign of a good visit.
RJ is on the move again. He just got called to relieve a driver that's been out in the field (Gustave and Ike damage) for the last four weeks.  At least I know RJ won't be gone too long this time. He'll be home right before J's wedding in October, so I figure 3 weeks on the outside.  Today is he out there painting the Inn, working on that second coat of paint. She certainly does look beautiful.  After I take him to the airport and cook breakfast for my guests in the morning, I should be able to get in back and paint that one section that he can't reach.  Then it's back to the "little" house to finish cleaning and ironing.  There is an Agricultural Society Fair at the Genesee Country Village and Museum on Octdober 4 and 5.  I would like to enter a child's sweater. We'll see if I can get it finished within the next couple of days. It's going to ge a busy weekend again and I don't think I'll have a lot of time until Monday and Tuesday.  It's a really cute pattern. The cardigan has an owl pattern knitted right into the bodice.  When I finish, I'll take a picture and post it on the Blog.
I'm into the second Dexter book by Jeff Lindsay and loving it.  Easy, fun read.  I walked down to my local library the other day to check out what else is new. The Donnelly House in Mumford houses our local library.  Our selection is actually pretty good for a small library, but I can get anything I want from any of the Monroe llibraries through my branch. I picked up John Saul's new release Face of Fear abd Kathy Reichs' Devil's Bones. That should keep me busy for a while.
     Later...

Congress's failure to solve this problem

Posted by thecolumn

Congress and the Federal Reserve are going about this whole thing in the wrong way in my opinion.

Raising capital gains tax is the one thing they should be doing, but let's be honest here...they have a bunch of lobbyists who are going to benefit from this bail out and they will make money off it.

Congress is making the money off of our suffering as a free market. No wonder we're on a path to socialism in this country! This is the first step in that direction, what's next? We have to bail out GM and Ford? This is going to get messy as it keeps on going.

We can only sit back and watch the free market be taken away from us.

Mabon

Posted by Silver Wynd

Mabon, sometimes also known as Harvest Home, Harvest Tide, or Second Harvest is the celebration of Autumn Equinox and is traditionally celebrated on September 21-23. Traditionally it marked the middle of the harvest. It is a time of giving thanks for the bounty you have reaped and can now enjoy. Incidentally Libra is the sign which starts this celebration. And the Scales of Balance have a direct link to the harvest, as this was the time of the year when farmers would bring in their goods to be weighed and sold.

Mabon is a celebration for symbolic sacrifice, as it has a clear connection to the idea of death, but in the Pagan tradition death represents change. From this, new life will be allowed to spring forth. Mabon is the day when the god of light is defeated by his twin, the god of darkness In the Welsh myth of Blodeuwedd the Autumnal Equinox is the only day of the whole year when Llew (light) is vulnerable and it is possible to defeat him. Llew now stands on the balance (Libra/autumnal equinox), with one foot on the cauldron (Cancer/summer solstice) and his other foot on the goat (Capricorn/winter solstice). Thus he is betrayed by Blodeuwedd, the Virgin (Virgo) and transformed into an Eagle (Scorpio).

Having defeated Llew, Goronwy (darkness) now takes over Llew's functions, both as lover to Blodeuwedd, the Goddess, and as King of our own world. Although Goronwy, the Horned King, now sits on Llew's throne and begins his rule immediately, his formal coronation will not be for another six weeks, occurring at Samhain (Halloween) or the beginning of Winter, when he becomes the Winter Lord, the Dark King, Lord of Misrule. Goronwy's other function has more immediate results, however. He mates with the virgin goddess, and Blodeuwedd conceives, and will give birth -- nine months later (at the Summer Solstice) -- to Goronwy's son, who is really another incarnation of himself, the Dark Child.

Llew's sacrificial death at Harvest Home also identifies him with John Barleycorn, spirit of the fields. Thus, Llew represents not only the sun's power, but also the sun's life trapped and crystallized in the corn. Often this corn spirit was believed to reside most especially in the last sheaf or shock harvested, which was dressed in fine clothes, or woven into a wicker-like man-shaped form. This effigy was then cut and carried from the field, and usually burned, amidst much rejoicing. So one may see Blodeuwedd and Goronwy in a new guise, not as conspirators who murder their king, but as kindly farmers who harvest the crop which they had planted and so lovingly cared for. And yet, anyone who knows the old ballad of John Barleycorn knows that we have not heard the last of him.

They let him stand till midsummer's day,
Till he looked both pale and wan,
And little Sir John's grown a long, long beard
And so become a man...

Traditionally a large whicker figure, which was made to represent the spirit of vegetation which is sacrificed during this season is burned in celebration and in honor of the spirits. Some people suggest that it was from this tradition that the misconception of Druids committing human sacrifices was created (Though this is a topic for another day, I am inclined to believe that some people simply try to deny and distance themselves from the idea of sacrifice because of their own misconceptions of it, when it is known that near ever tradition and culture, historically practiced it)

In the rhythm of the year, Harvest Home marks a time of rest after hard work. The crops are gathered in, and winter is still a month and a half away! Although the nights are getting cooler, the days are still warm, and there is something magical in the sunlight, for it seems silvery and indirect. As we pursue our gentle hobbies of making corn dollies (those tiny vegetation spirits) and wheat weaving, our attention is suddenly arrested by the sound of baying from the skies (the 'Hounds of Annwn' passing?), as lines of geese cut silhouettes across a harvest moon.

Financial Bailout = Bad for all of us

Posted by thecolumn

Expansion of Government in my mind is never a good thing. Look at how Europe and China are run. State owned healthcare (which has been proven to be a failure in Canada especially). and high income taxes on all the citizens.

This takeover does nothing but allow them to control people more now, this is a radical leftwing person's dream. If any of you really believe that having the Government tell you how to live is a good thing, you're mistaken.

The CEO's will get their money regardless of this whole bail out, they are the winners here. We are paying for their failures and I have to say I don't know how Obama if he wins isn't going to tax everyone with this disaster. 1 trillion dollars is basically what it will be, you can't just tax the "rich" to get all of that money.

I hope this doesn't turn us into a communist state one day, we're in the first stage of that path.

Fall is in the air

Posted by Yankee Innkeeper
Today is the first day of Autumn and time to start planning for winter.  I worked on my tinder box today.  I took the branches and twigs that I collected from the tree RJ cut up the other day and manged to create a large enough tinder box to get us started when the nip in the air turns to snow on the ground. Although we heat the Inn with oil and natural gas, the "little" house is heated with wood and natural gas as a backup.
I've started working in the basement of the Inn. There are boxes to be sorted, linens to be donated, and stuff to be thrown out that's been collecting dust.  So the curb saw my old computer monitor and a lot of empty boxes.  I gathered 2 garbage bags of towels and old sheets to take to the animal adoption agency tomorrow.  RJ put the second coat of paint on the exterior of the Inn today. There is just a little bit that I will have to do because he can't fit his hand between the fence rails to reach the clapboard. I should be able to get to that tomorrow.
I finished Darkly, Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsey.  What a wonderful story! I just loved it!  So of course, I immediately borrowed the second book in the series. So many books... so little time.
I have some errands to run tomorrow so I think that will be done after breakfast. Tonight I have the cutest couple ever staying with me.  They are celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary. I hope I will be as fortuante.

Closing up in battleground states

Posted by thecolumn

Today I had a volunteer for Barrack Obama show up at my door. We talked about the election and the candidates and she was trying to get me to say who I was voting for, but I never really told her.

I consider myself in the middle with this stuff and don't really want to say who I am voting for. I have made my mind up and I believe the candidate will be a good President. For them to be asking about undecided voters is a big deal. The Democrats seem pretty worried about Sarah Palin and white voters especially. They have good reason to be worried, most Hillary supporters I know are for McCain now so Hillary has another shot.

I know I haven't been writing daily as much, the truth is I have been busy and I have to keep up a life outside of writing on here like the rest of you. So for my subscribers I apologize.

Have any of you had people call or ask you about who you will vote for?

Techno Queen

Posted by Yankee Innkeeper
Yeah! I finally got a new laptop.  I bought an new Dell XSP with a new wireless printer. But the best ever is I took advantage of a special purchase of a Dell Mini 9.  How cool is that!  This XPS is the perfect size for me.  Lightweight with lots of memory.  I love it!  Now I will have no excuse for not writing.  I don't have to share the computer with RJ because I know have mine own.
RJ has been painting outside. The main portion of the Inn is solid stone with walls that are 2 1/2 feet thick. The second floor is stucco and the additions in the rear overlooking the pond is clapboard.  The clapboard is now a gorgeous shade of medium sage with white trim.  The stucco will be a medium gray and the doors a rich burgundy.  He just finished planting our fall mums in a variety of colors. Sadly, the cosmos are at the end of their season and it's time to cut them down and prepare the ground for the winter season. Tomorrow is already the first day of fall. I'm always surprised that the summer ends so quickly. Our upcoming fall season looks busy with guests visiting family, planning getaways, vacationing i the Rochester and Finger Lakes, or visiting the Genesee Country Village and Museum. There is so much to do in the area we surprise ourselves sometimes by taking advantage of some of the activities when we can get away.
I took a ride to the Abbey of the Genesee in Piffard to visit the chapel and pick up my Monk's bread.  This is where the Trappists Monk's bake their breads and make their jams and jellies.  They bake fruit cakes, brownies, and decadent chocolate delights. The chapel is a very peaceful place and offers a time for reflection and prayer.  I try to get down there as much as possible.  It's a short drive, only 15 minutes, and wll worth it. Many of my guests who visit Geneseo or Letchworth State Park will make the side trip and when they return they are always pleased to have taken the time.  Living out in the country so close to nature, you can feel the wonder and awe all around. This morning during breakfast, my guests were enjoying good food, good conversation, and good companionship, when one of them looked out to see our ducks on the pond. Their tail feathers were up in the air as they groped under the surface for food.  In the evening, the native brown trout and native brook trout can be seen swimming through the crystal clear water and poking through the water to nip at insects flying too close to the surface.t
It's time to start getting our wood cut and split for the heating season.  RJ already cut up one tree and I started to gather kindling. This is will a job we will do over the next month. It'll take RJ a good couple of weekends to cut up what we already have down. Till later...

Espionage

Posted by Dutchboy
Some 18 years after the cold war ended we have an actual espionage scandal in this country. For some reason the Moroccans are spying in the Netherlands. A Moroccan policeman was fired recently after his role in the espionage scandal was confirmed by internal affairs. A while ago the Moroccan government called back two diplomats. Strangely, I don't see what's wrong with the Moroccan operations. From what politicians, etc., are saying, I can only come to the conclusion that the spies are mostly spying on Moroccans living in the Netherlands, who might pose a threat to the Moroccan government. If there are terrorists among them, who are we to blame the Moroccan government for wanting to fight them. Anyways, if it turns out that the intentions of the Moroccan government are more evil than that, I'll keep you posted.

Todd Palin- Shadow Governor?

Posted by thecolumn

There has been a lot of speculation as to how much influence Todd Palin has in Alaska. The leader of the Republican side of the State Senate said this week that he was in meetings that she was having with Sarah Palin and found it odd.

What does one expect this guy to do? Sit and watch reruns of football games, go fish? I think that having a person to get an opinion from is important if they are your spouse and understand what's going on.

Hillary was a close advisor to Bill and praised for it. So is it unfair that Todd Palin is being accused of having too much power and influence?

I'll let you guys decide

The New Moon Brings New Love

Posted by Silver Wynd

When you have just parted from a lover and are feeling downhearted, the moon will smile kindly on your love life, if she is asked properly.

Wait for the new moon, and on the first night go outdoors and hold up a ring near your eye untill the moon appears in its circle. Say:

New moon, true moon, I hail thee;

In your body milky white,

May I see this very night, the man (or woman) who will my partner be.

Now you may see an apparition or a face in the moon; or if a cloud scuds across the moon, your love will be on the way. But if in any case, walk back from the moon with your eye viewing it through the ring. Sleep that night upon the ring, and wear it for the next month from then. During that time you will find at least one new suitor.

Feather for Fortune

If you pass a feather on the grass, stop and left it without a sound. Push it into the soil where it lies, and push a tiny coin (like a penny) undeneath it, for fairy treasure. In exchange the faries will favor you for your kindness with treasure of your own.
