Labyrinth of the Mind

Please bear with us, (me)

Posted by JournalHome.com

Hi,

I had to make some changes to the server and that caused a few up and down times, (as well as a few unexpected behavior).
I am fixing all the errors as I find them and I am trying to deal with the new database load as well.
I have had some reports that the stats are simply not right, I cannot see anything wrong with the numbers yet, but I am also looking at it.

I had to get a bigger server because at times the load was getting a bit too much, (especially from 10:00 to 04:00 GMT).
This was causing some down time when there was too much activity.
I have been deleting about 10-20 bogus accounts a day so I'm afraid that the rise in activity is mainly due to them.

In any case, things should work a lot better as soon as I have fixed a few teething problems, but please, bear with me in the meantime.

Please let me know if you come across any weird and wonderful problems.

Florida and a New Chapter

Posted by Yankee Innkeeper

We arrived yesterday in Florida for our son Jason and his bride Jennifer's wedding.  Yesterday, we spent a wonderful evening sharing time and good food with family and friends.  It's times like this that I miss living so far away from all the boys. Michael and Jessie flew in from LA and Nicholas is coming in this afternoon. The blending of families can be a joyous time, especially when two people are so well matched.

Today will be a fun-filled day with manicures, rehearsal, and a rehearsal dinner outside under the beautiful Florida skies.  I am afraid this time together will be over way too fast and I will have to leave my children to go back to my world of innkeeping in New York.  The kids had obviously taken great pains to plan the wedding of their dreams with lots of themselves intertwined in the festivities. J and J had make their own wedding cake (no surprise since that is what they do - bake cakes!)  The handmade truffles (their own creations) look divine and almost sinful! *she can't wait to indulge in one of those delectable treats*

Before I know it, tomorrow will be here and we will be at the Baughman Center witnessing the marriage of two wonderful people. I pray their lives together will be loving, fruitful, and blessed.

I love you  both... mom

Violets for beauty and health

Posted by Silver Wynd

Beloved by the Gods for thier scent and fragile beauty, here is a regime to enact when you see the first bunch of violets in later winter or early spring to ensure your own healthful and fragrant appeal.

Breathe deeply in the scent of the vilolet flower (you cannot do this for long, becasue the armoa is so strong). Feel the scent cheering and waking your slumbering wintery spirit and body. Make a salad for supper and stew in some violet flowers and leaves, place some of the flowers in a drink of sparkling water as well.

At bedtime put a few flowers into your favorite moisturizer and let them steep for a time. Then caress your face with the cream and particularly the flowers. If you have some violet essential oil or perfume, sprinkle it also on the pillow to boost the effect.

In the morning your skin will be soft and smooth. Your physical well being also will be heigthend and your spirits elated.

Got my ESVSB!

Posted by Martin Burch

I am pretty excited about my new ESV Study Bible. This is by far the most in-depth study bible I have ever owned. TONS of notes makes for a weighty bible. But it is rich. Can't wait to really dig into this one!

Roses of Love

Posted by Silver Wynd

You will need: 2 pieces of paper about 3 x 1 inches, a tiny jar, some honey, a beautiful rose bush (traditionally a two-colored vairty)

Write your name on one of the two peices of paper and your partners on the other. Kissing them both tie them into a knot and put them together in the little jar then fill the jar with honey and put the lid on the jar. Now plant the rose bush, if possible you and your partner should do this together, but you may do it alone. Bury the jar with your names in with the rose bush. Say something like:

We are earthly creatures living here on earth

which is sweetend by the gifts of nature's bounty

and by the knowlege of each of us, of the other's exsistence

may we make our earhtly selves the most that we can

and joining together, sweeten and beautify our own and our friend's exsistences.

Water, cherish and love your rose. Cut blooms from it reguarly to place in your home, or if you have one, on a love altar. Every year restate your love and intent before the rose bush.

Robbed

Posted by Dutchboy
I was robbed this morning. I know, I should go to the cops and let them know what happened. After all, they stole from me, and they would steal again from other people, but it was so silly... I think I'll let them off the hook this time.

What happened? Well, of course, I too get a lot of junkmail delivered to my house, and along with old newspapers, etc., it's collected every two weeks. Sometimes, however, there's so much of it that if I have half a chance to get rid of it (legally, I might add), I do so. There are no paper collection bins where I live, but this morning I had to be someplace where there are some, so I took it with me on the train. I set the bag next to me, and in no time I am surrounded by four kids aged 13-16, as far as I can tell. They were upto something, which I could tell by how they acted, and how they were looking at me. At Hoorn Kersenboogerd station, they suddenly got up, and made off with my old newspapers and junkmail like lightning, thinking they'd robbed me of something valuable. It's an interesting experience. I have never had this happen to me before. I would have loved to see their faces when they saw what they had stolen.

Enkhuizen, the Center of the World

Posted by Dutchboy
The World of Jazz, that is. Two days ago, in the heart of the city, the Jazz Walk of Fame was revealed to the public. It's a square with stars representing legends from the world of jazz. So, what makes Enkhuizen (the city I live in, for those who don't know me) so important to the jazz world? Well, we have an annual jazz festival...

However, that's it. It isn't even a very important international event. It has some importance, but in this country I believe we have two jazz festivals that are bigger, and I know of jazz festivals across Europe that are bigger than 'Enkhuizen'. Besides, I've seen the lineups from the past few years, but those consist mainly of Dutch bands. Beyond our borders, only hardcore jazz fans who listen to anything they consider jazz might have heard of them. Also, in Hollywood it is the custom that the celebrities are there when their star is revealed. No jazz legend came to Enkhuizen this weekend.

I don't even see the Jazz Walk of Fame drawing many more tourists to the town. It is lovely, and if you're a German tourist who comes to the Netherlands every year, it's one of those places you have to have seen, but for people who come from farther away, it can't compete with the likes of Amsterdam, The Hague, Maastricht, Volendam, etc. Still, I don't mind a bit of megalomania, so it's lovely to have such a place in town.

Charms for Love

Posted by Silver Wynd

Perform this spell when gentle rain is falling.

You will need: 2 charms, choosen to represent you and your partner (the charms can be any two objects that reperestns yourself and your loved one for you.) water taken from a running source, (such as a stream, creek, river) A jar or small container.

Best done on a New Moon

Anoint the charms that represent you and your lover with the water you have collected. This can be best done by placing the charms within a jar or other water vessel filled with the water. Say the following over the charms:

Marriage in heaven is surely made

Let our hopes and amity never fade

Thinks about the words and make a promise to yourself never to become complacent about the union you now desire. Undertake to keep it and cherish and feed it. Do not make this vow lightheartedly. Now the charms should be removed and the water thrown back into another running source on this rainy day or evening. Once again make a plea for the fullfillment of your desires, but do not renege once you have your wish on the pledge you made to aquire it.

It's Happening Again and I Hate it.

Posted by Fightingfemale

Market Day problems. I hate it when somebody makes it their mission to revitalize Market Day. I hate the PFE (PTA) scenario. I got out of that years ago, with it's politics and meaninglessness. Sure it's great to earn money for the schools, (usually for parties, a beanbag chair for the library, etc.) but I've had it with sitting for 1/2 hr. while people debate whether to have water bottles or popsicles for Field Days. Ugh! I'm not Miss High Powered Career Executive who has no time for that, but I do have a job that keeps me VERY VERY busy. Even if I didn't, I think I'd rather have root canal than sit through that. Just pick one and move on. I don't look down on women who don't work, nor do I think that everybody PFE member is trying to satisfy her need for power and decision-making because this is her only outlet. But still......

Some career PFE people have taken interest in my Market Day sale site. That's right, I said 'my'. I appreciate the help, but I am used to making the decisions. I'm not talking about major decisions like money allocation, but just how things are done. If I want to pick up the forms from the schools, don't insist that someone bring them to my house. I know what works for me. I love that a Market Day customer and a person who has only been to one sale, take the liberty of meeting with the principal to design a table layout without consulting me. The weird thing is that these people never argue. I know that I am going to end up blowing up. In the real world, we would know who the boss is so we would know who has the final say. In the real world, I would say something like, "I appreciate your help and interest, but I am the site coordinator and I need to be able to make the final decision". Nobody ever says anything like that. They are all smiley-friendly. Of course, I have seen terrible fights erupt at the district meetings, but usually they are all smiley-smiley. Maybe I really don't give myself credit. Maybe these people have never had basic classes on how organizations run.

I can only hope that these people get bored or learn that this site is never going to make a million dollars, get a ton of volunteers for very long, etc.and go perform their heroics elsewhere in the district. In the meantime, I don't know how much more I can take. Since these people are not in the business-mode, I am going to have to redouble my assertive vs. aggressive communication. "Wow, it must have been hard for you to come up with a layout since you haven't had the benefit of seeing how the sales are fun. I wish I had known so I could have been there to help. I can always hav them rearrange things if..." Am I power hungry too? I suppose. I am definitely territorial. Extremely territorial. Usually people who are in the business mindset are wary of stepping on peoples toes. "I know that you would never (intentionally?) step on someone's toes, but I really need xyz to be abc". "

I'm doomed.

Of course, why do I need the hassle? What do I gain from it? Not money, that's for sure. My husband thinks that people think I get free food. My husband says that nobody volunteers because it's not a high profile position where they can stroke the principal. Worry that I'm going to overtax my legs moving boxes and worry that people will think that I'm just lazy. Calling 50+, sometimes ++++people to remind them to pick up their orders. Lugging  the orders to the freezer when they don't show up. Quieting my screaming kids who want to get home. My husband always tells me that I should offer them the position if they would like to run Market Day. I just don't want people telling me that I should do 'A' when I want to do 'B', when either is equally good. I remember from one of my early nursing courses more than 20 years ago that there is delegating, power, authority...if you are given a job to do, then you need to have the authority to carry it out. How did it go? You can delegate power, but not authority...I don't remember. But I am certain that if someone has a title/position, even a voluntary one, that it's not a good thing for people who have other titles to come in and start managing/changing things. At the very least I am going to have to say, "It is hard for me to keep track of the changes that other people are making. I'm not a major corporate person, but I am lost without an organization chart". Somehow I am going to have to take back control and stop things from getting out of hand.

I am doomed.

Big fan of Radio 1

Posted by JournalHome.com

In my last job in the UK I used to travel by car on the M1, at the time this was quite a novelty for me as I had always taken the tube to work. Now of course I drive everywhere, (there is no public transport to speak off).
Anyway, what I used to enjoy the most was listening to Radio 1 and Capital radio on the way, and it was not until last week that I though about trying to listen to it while at work.

I knew that they had a live Internet feed, but for some reason I just didn't think of it. Until now...

So for the past week I have been listening to the Chris Moyles breakfast show and Scott Mills, (if you missed scottcam last week you missed radio history).

Anyway, that was my little happy moment at work.

Things here are not going as strong, the political situation has become 'less than favorable', (this is my bosses polite way of saying that the country is heading the same way as most, (all?), African countries.
The wife and I are keen to say here a little longer while the financial storm that is currently hitting the US and UK calms down a bit, but I don't know how long this will last really, (my contract is fairly vague about political instability).

Blog Writing and Sound Bites

Posted by Yankee Innkeeper

I was so frustrated. Yesterday I wrote this piece for my blog and before I had a chance to hit post it disappeared into… cyberspace. So what happens when I spend all this time writing my thoughts and then it goes NO WHERE! Aghhh! By the time all my words went away, I had no choice but to close my laptop and go to sleep.

So now I’m back to writing in a word document and then transferring my thoughts through the old cut and paste method into my blog.  I wish there was a way for my blog master to work on preventing this from happening. I’m sure I’m not the only one. In fact, I tried to post on someone’s blog and after a lengthy thought-provoking response, I was unable to post because I couldn’t read the hidden code so my response went away. No recovering that one. Another “aghhh” out there.

I’ve decided that we live in a world of “sound bites.” No one listens to a complete anything.  All we hear are bits and pieces of a whole and based on that we make life changing decisions.  Wouldn’t it make more sense if we were able to take the time to listen to a complete anything and then be able to make our own decisions based on what we hear not on what someone tells us we should believe?  Our media news comes in “sound bites.” Our newspaper articles are written with highlights, never the complete story.  I worry that we are not taking the time to really understand what is happening in our world.

I think that’s why I enjoy my work as much as a do. I have a chance to really listen and work to understand.  Besides we should tend our own gardens first to create the best of all possible worlds.

Pelosi's intentional Failure

Posted by thecolumn
Nancy Pelosi thought she was clever when she tried to trick the Republicans into the bailout bill that was going to be ultimately a failure.
The Republicans were on board until they saw that all these Democrats start voting No and they start to wonder what is the deal here? Pelosi designed this scheme with her friends in the house to try to pin this on the Republicans and it has worked!
Obama is going to probably win the election because of yesterday's disaster in the market. This bail out is going to only cause more Americans to pay for the banks failings. We have to be happy that this didn't pass yesterday. We need some kind of plan, of course.
But this bailout is going to cost us $1 Trillion Dollars. Who will pay for it? WE are going to.

I am convinced Obama is going to win because of this and that people are going to be more worried about their jobs now. McCain is finished.

New On-line Bible: this raises the standard

Posted by Martin Burch

Well, they have done it. The innovative and hard-working folks at Logos Bible Software have released their on-line Bible, and my tests on it show it to be an outstanding resource. There is a long list of translations available to search (including original language critical texts). I think it is awesome and will be the top standard for what an on-line Bible should be. More News from the Road

Posted by Yankee Innkeeper
RJ is on the move again. He is being sent to Cinnicinati, Ohio, from Houston. The good news is he will only be a day's drive away from home. The weather is been perfect for autumn - warm days, cool nights. The colors will be glorious this year. One of my large bushes in the backyard next to the dam is starting to get a brush of red color across the top.  I've deadheaded my geraniums and my marigolds. Pretty soon the potted plants will be finished and it will be time to put the pots away.  Today I put out my fall centerpiece and wreath. My summer and spring decorations are now put away in the basement. I have a lot of organizing to do in the basement.  I have to find a way to store my linenes that do not fit into the current storage cabinets. I started to throw out old programs and files along with carkpet
Tomorrow seems like a good day to file paperwork and add my entries for the Inn to quickborooks.
I am still very tired. This cold really wears me out. It's time to crash. I'll write more tomorrow when I'm feeling better.

Letterman rips into McCain

Posted by thecolumn

David Letterman, who we all know is a far leftist in his political views took shots at McCain for canceling his appearance. Was that fair? I'd say yes to a degree...

But, when you attack someone the way he did it got overboard.

"This is not the John McCain I know, by God," Letterman said. "It makes me believe something is going haywire with the campaign."

"Are we suspending it because there's an economic crisis or because the poll numbers are sliding?" Letterman asked.

We can get a laugh from some of the jokes, but this is purely a cheapshot at McCain.

I don't think I'll be getting any political advice from David Letterman if I ever ran for office.

McCain suspends campaigning for crisis?

Posted by thecolumn

Is this a joke? This is purely political, John McCain is trying to come off as not being political but he is being that. He is a patriot, no question.

He loves this country. This is also a good way to save some money when you might be in need of a lot of contributions. The economy is the #1 issue now and McCain is trying to look like some hero by not putting ads

If anyone thinks this isn't political, you're living on another planet.

I think Obama played his cards right by not accepting McCain's offer to stop putting ads out on both sides. Obama knows that McCain is stalling to buy time to address the Republican failure with the economy.

The real test here is going to be whether people will elect McCain now with his party taking the blame for their failure.

On The Move Again

Posted by Yankee Innkeeper
I just finished my article for Good Life Magazine and I have to admit it was one of my more difficult articles to write. The topic was okay. It's just I don't think about what I do - I just do it. So when someone asks me how to do you make people feel welcomed into your home, I really had to think about it. First, I guess, I enjoy company and people in general so it's easy to entertain. I treat people like I would like to be treated if I was visiting someone. I was people to have the best experience ever and be sad to leave. And I have to admit, some of my guests are sad when it's time to leave. That's the sign of a good visit.
RJ is on the move again. He just got called to relieve a driver that's been out in the field (Gustave and Ike damage) for the last four weeks.  At least I know RJ won't be gone too long this time. He'll be home right before J's wedding in October, so I figure 3 weeks on the outside.  Today is he out there painting the Inn, working on that second coat of paint. She certainly does look beautiful.  After I take him to the airport and cook breakfast for my guests in the morning, I should be able to get in back and paint that one section that he can't reach.  Then it's back to the "little" house to finish cleaning and ironing.  There is an Agricultural Society Fair at the Genesee Country Village and Museum on Octdober 4 and 5.  I would like to enter a child's sweater. We'll see if I can get it finished within the next couple of days. It's going to ge a busy weekend again and I don't think I'll have a lot of time until Monday and Tuesday.  It's a really cute pattern. The cardigan has an owl pattern knitted right into the bodice.  When I finish, I'll take a picture and post it on the Blog.
I'm into the second Dexter book by Jeff Lindsay and loving it.  Easy, fun read.  I walked down to my local library the other day to check out what else is new. The Donnelly House in Mumford houses our local library.  Our selection is actually pretty good for a small library, but I can get anything I want from any of the Monroe llibraries through my branch. I picked up John Saul's new release Face of Fear abd Kathy Reichs' Devil's Bones. That should keep me busy for a while.
     Later...

Congress's failure to solve this problem

Posted by thecolumn

Congress and the Federal Reserve are going about this whole thing in the wrong way in my opinion.

Raising capital gains tax is the one thing they should be doing, but let's be honest here...they have a bunch of lobbyists who are going to benefit from this bail out and they will make money off it.

Congress is making the money off of our suffering as a free market. No wonder we're on a path to socialism in this country! This is the first step in that direction, what's next? We have to bail out GM and Ford? This is going to get messy as it keeps on going.

We can only sit back and watch the free market be taken away from us.
