At the farthest end of the archipelago, where the Pacific Ocean merges with the South China Sea, a Filipina develops a romance with a Taiwanese fisherman despite their language and cultural barrier"proving that, indeed, love knows no borders. That is the premise of the Ignite Media and GMA Films presentation, Batanes, which will open in theaters nationwide starting December 5. Directed by Adolf Alix Jr. and Dave Hukom, this 35mm film showcases the unique beauty of the island after which it is named. The Ivatan limestone houses, the breathtaking rock formations, and the gorgeous lighthouse of Basco and Sabtang islands serve as the backdrop for a love story between the headstrong Pam (Iza Calzado) and the gentle Kao (Ken Zhu). When PEP asked Iza to describe the island of Batanes, she gushed, "It's so pure. Feeling ko yung beauty ng Batanes, yung innocence and simplicity of the place. Yung untouched territory talaga siya, which I hope remains like that. Hindi na-e-exploit. It's actually overwhelming kasi dun mo makikita ang power ng nature against man. At any point in time, siya ang pwedeng kumuha ng buhay mo"ang dagat, yung dilim, ang gabi, mga animals. "Walang ilaw dun ‘pag gabi. Walang street lights. Although the F4 member was unable to attend the press con of Batanes, which took place last November 13 at the GMA-7 compound, the media was shown a taped interview wherein Ken shared his thoughts about the island. Ken was videotaped on a beach in Batanes and behind him was a spectacular view of the sunset. "I didn't expect Batanes to be so beautiful," said the F4 boy-band member. "You can call the place a paradise. And it's so near to Taiwan. It's so relaxing." During the press con it was revealed that the Taiwanese superstar was supposed to act opposite another young superstar, Judy Ann Santos. Director Adolf admitted that he even approached Judy Ann during the first shooting day of Ouija in order to show her the script of Batanes. She would have loved to do the project but prior commitments prevented her from accepting the offer. But Judy Ann recommended her Ouija co-star Iza Calzado to fill in her shoes. The GMA-7 star felt flattered that Judy Ann herself recommended her for the role. At the time, Iza was still waiting for confirmation whether or not she would reprise her role in the Hollywood remake of Sigaw. Fortunately, she was chosen to play the role of Gina, the wife of a policeman (played by Kevin Durand) in The Echo. Iza managed to fix her schedule so she was able to star in Batanes and The Echo. MULTI-LINGUAL KEN. In Batanes, Ken's speaking lines are mostly in Mandarin but off-cam, he is fluent in English, which is why the other cast and staff members had no problems communicating with him. Regarding his role as Kao the fisherman, Ken says that it was a very big challenge for him. "It's my first time to play a role that requires a lot of body language, more than lines." Communicating with others is not a problem for the Singapore-educated actor since Ken speaks English, Cantonese, Singlish, and a bit of Thai, Indonesian, and Japanese. It was also revealed that the organizers originally didn't think of getting an F4 member to play a role in the movie. "We never planned to get Ken since we just wanted a Taiwanese actor. But Arleen [Cuevas, executive producer of the film] was able to get in touch with Ken and surprisingly, he replied that he liked the material." When asked why he chose Batanes for the setting of his movie, Adolf pointed out that this is his second film to be shot in the northernmost province of the Philippines. The place is very unique to the Philippines. It's like going to a different country. It can rival New Zealand . SYNOPSIS. It was a whirlwind romance when Pam (Iza Calzado) meets Ivatan Rico (Joem Bascon) in Manila. She decides to give up her meaningless, stressful city life and follow him to Batanes to meet his parents Boy and Lydia (Bembol Roco, Daria Ramirez) and marry him. The sea immediately intimidates Pam and shows its power, telling her how, with the strong toss of its waves, it can end everything. Pam tries to adapt to the Ivatan way of life. Pam starts hating the sea that Rico loves so much. Despite all these adjustments, Pam is happy with her new life and with Rico. But everything changes when Rico does not return from fishing. Pam is devastated. She blames no one but the sea. Realizing that she cannot continue living in Batanes without Rico, Pam decides to leave. But before boarding the boat, she realizes that the sea is laughing at her defeat, so Pam decides to stay but she still cannot forget Rico. On the anniversary of her husband's death, Pam sails to the Ivujos Island. She gets stranded on the island by an angry storm. She then sees a man lying face down in the sand. For a moment, she thinks it is Rico. But it turns out to be a Taiwanese, Kao (Ken Zhu). She administers to his wounds and brings down his fever. When the storm breaks, she drags Kao to her boat and takes him back with her. The villagers are reluctant to accept the Taiwanese, especially Manuel (Sid Lucero) and Boy (Bembol Roco) since most Taiwanese fishermen fish illegally in the waters of Batanes. As Pam takes care of Kao, she starts to be drawn towards him. She starts to feel that he is a kindred soul. Language and cultural difference are no barriers as emotions rise. Love surfaces anew. Batanes provides the breathtaking backdrop to their poignant love story. Will their love win over? Or will their past haunt them and eventually separate them? Essentially a picturesque romance, Batanes also explores the intimate portrait of a woman's relationship with the ocean. On November 28-30, there will be a special screening of the movie Batanes on the island itself. Meanshile, Ken Zhu will come back to the Philippines next month to promote the film, which will open in theaters starting December 5. |

Whammy! Push Your Luck, Daisy Siete, and Eat Bulaga! once more took turns for the No. 1 spot this week in the daytime race while Marimar continues its grip on the primetime leadership despite the pressure being exerted by Kamandag. For Monday, November 26, Whammy! Push Your Luck managed to pull out from a squeaker against the 17th season of Daisy Siete titled "Ulingling." Paolo Bediones and Rufa Mae Quinto's game show collected a slim 25.9 percent rating versus the 25.8 percent clip accumulated by Daisy Siete. Trailing the leaders were Eat Bulaga! (24.4 percent) and the dangerous Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal (21.1 percent). Both shows nailed the third and fourth spot, respectively. Carrying a much safer lead, Whammy! confidently asserted its presence the following day, November 27, through its 26.1 percent showing. Daisy Siete, on the other hand, garnered a 22.3 percent rating to settle at second place. There'll be no three in a row feat, however, for Whammy! as Eat Bulaga! finally caught them taking a nap on November 28, Wednesday, by virtue of its 23.6 percent rating. Pouncing on the opportunity, Eat Bulaga! overtook Whammy!, which slipped to fourth place behind Daisy Siete's 23.5 percent and Deal or No Deal's 22.9 percent rating. The rest of the daytime contenders remained pretty much the same. The primetime battle remained one-sided. Talking about the top spot, Marimar remained unruffled despite Kamandag's unrelenting hustle. On November 26, Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes earned 44.9 percent while Kamandag gathered 41.4 percent. Despite relinquishing the second spot since Kamandag's entry, Zaido is still an adversary to contend with. Last Monday, November 26, Zaido took the fourth spot, pacing 24 Oras's 36.3 percent rating. Pangarap na Bituin and Princess Sarah were also engaged with their own battle. November 26 witnessed Princess Sarah getting the better of Pangarap na Bituin as proven by its 26.7 percent rating against the latter's 25.2 percent. The next day weaved a different result as Pangarap na Bituin gained a 27.1 percent rating while Princess Sarah gathered 26.0 percent. After Whammy! Push Your Luck was dislodged at No. 1 spot by Daisy Siete's "Tabachiching" episode for one whole week, the game show of Paolo Bediones and Rufa Mae Quinto wasted no time to reclaim the top spot in the daytime race yesterday, November 19.
But while Whammy! sat alone at the summit by its 24.3 percent rating, a three-way log jam was happening at the No. 2 spot with Eat Bulaga, Daisy Siete, and Deal or No Deal sharing identical 21.6 percent rating.
Willie Revillame's Wowowee, in the meantime, garnered an 18.1 percent clip to claim the third spot. But more than the ranking itself, Wowowee's performance is perhaps a sign that the controversial noontime-game show is on its way to recover lost ground.
Moving to the primetime bracket, Richard Gutierrez's Kamandag was off to an impressive start as the TV adaptation of the Carlo J. Caparas's obra debuted at second place.
For its first official telecast, Kamandag amassed a total of 42.7 percent rating to trail consistent topnotcher Marimar, which collected a 43.3 percent rating. Although the drama series starring Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes remained untouched at first place, the show's rating took a noticeable nosedive. Last Friday, November 16, Marimar was .5 shy of reaching a rare 50 percent rating.
Due to Kamandag's entry, Zaido found itself being relegated to the third spot. This time, Dennis Trillo and the rest of the Pulis Pangkalawakan garnered a 36.7 percent clip.
Two other GMA-7 shows made it in the Top 5, 24 Oras was in fourth place with 34.5 percent while La Vendetta was in fifth place with 28.8 percent. The Kapuso network's Koreanovela, Hwang Jini, squeezed in at No. 9 with 22.4 percent.
Meanwhile, four ABS-CBN shows barged in at the Top 10: TV Patrol World (No. 6, 26.5 percent); Princess Sarah (No. 7, 23.6 percent); Pangarap Na Bituin (No. 8, 23 percent); and Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition (No. 10, 20.8 percent).
Obviously affected by Kamandag's entry in the primetime slot are ABS-CBN's two other shows: Lastikman which dropped to No. 11 with 20.6 percent and Ysabella at No. 12 with 15.9 percent.

It's curtain call for both Kung Mahawi Man ang Ulap and Kokey last Friday, November 9, as they ended their television run in flying colors.
For the last time, GMA-7's Kung Mahawi Man Ang Ulap, bowed out at No. 1 with a remarkable 27.8 percent rating. ABS-CBN's Kokey, on the other hand, gathered a 28.6 percent clip, good enough to snuggle the fifth spot in the primetime bracket for the last time.
Charo Santos's longtime-running drama anthology, Maalaala Mo Kaya featuring Valerie Concepcion and Luis Manzano, also had a strong showing that same day, registering 24.4 percent to grab the seventh place and even thumping Sarah Geronimo's Pangarap na Bituin (22.4 percent) and ABS-CBN's strong bet, Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition (21.3 percent).
Sadly, two other ABS-CBN shows"Ysabella (No. 11, 21 percent) and Lastikman (No. 12, 18.2 percent)"failed to make it in the Top 10.
The bikini showdown between Bella (Marian Rivera) and Angelika (Katrina Halili) in Marimar, however, was the day's most-watched television program. Marimar retained its No. 1 position by posting a whopping 47.2 percent rating, followed by three other Kapuso shows"Zaido (36.9 percent), La Vendetta (32.1 percent), and 24 Oras (31.5).
Saturday, November 10, witnessed the return of Eat Bulaga! to the apex of the daytime race. The "Miss Bebot 2007" finals in Eat Bulaga! clamped down the comeptition to reclaim the No. 1 spot with its 28 percent rating.
Last week's No. 1 Super Inggo 1.5 dropped to fifth place with 18.6 percent rating, behind Wish Ko Lang's 19.2 percent rating and Fantastic Man's 18.9 percent.
Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, in the meantime, nudged Michael V's Bitoy's Funniest Vidceos out of the top spot albeit almost by a hairline. Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho mustered enough strength to grab the lead with a 31.3 percent rating against Bitoy's Funniest Videos' 30.8 percent.
Dangerous Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition (25.3 percent) loomed at the No. 4 spot overall just behind Janno Gibbs's game show, Kakasa Ka Ba Sa Grade 5?, which registered an impressive 26.5 percent.
There's no rest for Paolo Bediones as his Sunday game show Tok! Tok! Tok! Isang Milyon Pasok once more escaped the hot pursuits of Mel & Joey (24.8 percent), Kap's Amazing Stories (23.3 percent), and Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition (20.2 percent) to conclude the week at No.1 with a 26.2 percent rating.
The battle of Sunday showbiz talk shows was once again won by Showbiz Central (No, 4) with 14.3 percent rating compared to The Buzz's (No. 5) 11.5 percent.
Meanwhile, it was a close fight between the two Sunday musical variety programs, but SOP (14.7 percent) slightly edged out rival ASAP '07 (14.6 percent) by mere .01 percent.
But it was Takeshi's Castle who was the overall leader in the daytime slot with its 15.8 percent rating.
Turning a new leaf, Monday, November 12, turned out to be Daisy Siete's lucky day as the SexBomb Girls shoot to the top spot via its 23.9 percent rating. GMA-7's new afternoon drama series, My Only Love, starring Rhian Ramos and Mark Herras debuted at No.3 with a 19.8 percent showing.
The primetime slot, again topped by Marimar (45.7 percent), also had a rookie to show off. ABS-CBN's Princess Sarah officially opened its gates to the viewing public. Determined to prove itself as a worthy successor to Kokey, Princess Sarah topbilled by child star Sharlene San Pedro debuted with 27.1 percent rating to upset Vhong Navarro's Lastikman (22.7 percent), which only tallied at No. 8 overall.

The lazy week leading to the All Saints Day and All Souls Day holidays saw a lot of interesting shake-ups in the ratings game. GMA-7's new suspense-drama series La Vendetta opened last October 29 and received a fair reception as it debuted at No. 4 overall with a rating of 28.7 percent. The daytime programming continues to be hostile territory for all the programs under the bracket as proven by the lead changes inside the Top 10. Despite gaining the No. 1 slot on October 29, Whammy! Push Your Luck relinquished the crown to Pasan Ko ang Daigdig the following day, October 30. Another afternoon drama contender, Kung Mahawi Man ang Ulap, refused to bow out of contention as it clung tightly to the coattails of Pasan Ko ang Daigdig for the entire week. The soap's tenacity paid off last October 31 and bested all other daytime shows to nail the top spot through its 24.8 percent showing. Kris Aquino's Deal or No Deal was also no pushover. For the week, the popular game show almost pulled off a stunner as it climbed to No. 2 overall last November 2, garnering a strong 22 percent. Since moving out of the primetime slot, Deal or No Deal has performed much better and made itself a tough contender in the daytime match-up. With Marimar secure on the summit of the primetime race, ABS-CBN's Pinoy Big Brother, on the other hand, threatens to open up the competition guerilla style. Slowly inching its way, the second installment of Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition made its strongest showing to date last November 1, as it gained the No. 3 spot overall with its 27.9 percent grade"a good sign for the Kapamilya network as its strongest bet, Kokey, is about to bid farewell. Picking up from where Pendro Penduko left off, Makisig Morales's Super Inggo 1.5 snared the top spot last Saturday, November 3. Leaning on the strength of its 24 percent rating, Super Inggo overtook Eat Bulaga, which finished at second. Eat Bulaga posted a rating of 21.4 percent, closely followed by Wowowee, which featured Batangas Governor Vilma Santos's birthday celebration, with 21 percent. Fernando Poe Jr. may be gone, but he is still a consistent crowd drawer even on television. Notching the fourth spot, Cinema FPJ collected an impressive 19.7 percent rating. It is also interesting to note that Entertainment Live pulled one over the trio of Butch Francisco, Lorna Tolentino and the controversial Lolit Solis. Garnering a 14.8 percent clip, Entertainment Live upstaged Startalk's 13.5 percent rating. In the primetime race, Janno Gibbs's new show, Kakasa Ka Ba Sa Grade 5 managed to held its own as it registered a 27.5 percent rating to nail the third spot behind Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho's 30.4 percent. The boxing match between Mexican fighters Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez billed as Lagablaban placed second overall among daytime programs last Sunday, November 4. It got 16.7 percent rating behind SOP's 17.7 percent. The battle of Sunday showbiz talk shows was won this time by Showbiz Central with 15.6 percent, which is good for No. 3. The Buzz, on the other hand, posted a rating of 13.6 percent to land in No. 6. Kap's Amazing Stories, meanwhile, lorded it over among primetime programs with 29.8 percent rating.
It's really different when she's not with us."
PAUL SORIANO.

For now, concentrate muna ako sa boy-next-door image," pagtatapos niya. |

"As much as possible, ayokong nambabastos dahil ayoko rin namang bastusin ako.

Nasa Jerusalem, Israel, si Mother Lily Monteverde since November 2 at two weeks pa bago siya bumalik.
Sa "Christmas Tree" episode directed by Paul Daza (who is also directing for the first time na "a fulfillment after six year"), mga first timers sina John Prats, John Lapus, at Lovi Poe. Tanging sina Nash Aguas, Ms. Boots Anson Roa, Tonton Gutierrez, at Gina Alajar lang ang nakakaulit na.
First horror movie rin ito ng dalawang John at first movie naman ito ni Lovi na pumirma ng eight-picture contract with Regal.
The second episode is "Bangungot" directed by Michael Tuviera from last year's "LRT 2" episode.
Dennis had Txt (also directed by Tuviera), Pamahiin, and the upcoming Kulam; samantalang nasa White Lady si Pauleen last year.
The last episode is "Engkanto" directed by Topel Lee from last year's "Yaya" episode that started his career in the mainstream movies. Dito, lahat ng stars ay unang beses sa SRR, sina Katrina, Matt Evans, Mart Escudero, Melissa Ricks, Jewel Mische, Felix Roco, at Sam Concepcion.
Ito rin ang first horror movie ni Katrina at first movie nina Matt, Melissa, Jewel, Felix, at Sam; while it's the second horror movie of Mart after Hide and Seek.

This is the same time slot being occupied by Prinsesa ng Banyera ngayon katapat ang Sine Novela ng GMA-7 na Pasan Ko Ang Daigdig nina Yasmien Kurdi at JC de Vera.
Ang Prinsesa Ng Banyera ang unang afternoon soap ng ABS-CBN after a long while.

CALL FROM GABBY.
That time, wala pa sa real estate business si Gabby.

MANILA, Philippines - It’s official. “Philippine Idol’s” season 2 will be aired on GMA 7, according to Geraldine Bravo, director of Marketing and Sales for FremantleMedia, “Idol” franchise holder. “We are very fortunate to find a new partner to produce ‘Philippine Idol,’” said Bravo in an official statement sent to Inquirer Entertainment on Friday. The first season of the reality singing contest was aired by ABC 5 last year. ABC 5 earlier insisted that it was still “deep in discussions with Fremantle and … barring any major glitch … still mount the second season.” Sought to comment on the new development, ABC 5, through senior vice president for Corporate Affairs Terra Daffon, said, “ABC 5 is still waiting for official word from Fremantle.” Bravo’s formal announcement, however, sealed the deal with GMA 7. “It is our intention to make the biggest show the Philippines has ever seen,” Bravo said. According to various sources, the show’s target launch is February 2008. An insider told the Inquirer on Wednesday that GMA 7 had bagged the show as of Tuesday night. The source claimed that GMA 7 would treat its RP “Idol” as a totally new show, independent of the first season"meaning, Mau Marcelo would not be considered the first winner. But another informant said, “Fremantle should be the one to make such decisions.” Wilma Galvante, GMA 7 senior vice president for Entertainment TV, said, “As far as we are concerned, this is our first partnership with Fremantle for the ‘Idol’ franchise.” Bravo’s announcement, Galvante added, merely “means that [both parties] have agreed that GMA 7 has the experience, resources and people to mount talent-search programs [like ‘Idol’].” In the statement, Bravo said there was no problem in finding talented singers in the Philippines. “The challenge is to keep the show interesting, by providing the viewers with an insight into the journeys that the singers are .” Galvante agreed: “That’s the essence of the ‘Idol’ franchise.” However, she declined to comment on ABC 5’s status. “That’s between ABC 5 and the people it was talking to in Fremantle.” According to Bravo’s statement, “Fremantle has taken into consideration several parties to be the possible home of .” The statement reiterated that Fremantle considered GMA 7 as “an excellent partner ... having licensed other [Fremantle] shows like ‘Celebrity Duets,’ ‘Whammy,’ and ‘Family Feud.’” One source said Regine Velasquez was being eyed as new ‘Idol’ host; another claimed that Ryan Agoncillo and Ryan Cayabyab would be retained as host and judge, respectively. “It’s too early to go into such details,” said Galvante. Another question is whether Marcelo would compete in “Asian Idol” in November. According to a source, it was still undecided whether GMA 7 would participate in “Asian Idol” or whether record label Sony-BMG would field Marcelo in the regional contest in Jakarta. Quite tellingly, Jan Nieto, Marcelo’s runner-up on Idol, is also signing up with GMA 7. |
