My Response to Sony DRM Rootkit
I wrote a little while ago about the call to boycott Sony for what they have done with their DRM(Digital Rights Management) for some of their new CDs. You can read that here:Boycott Sony
Well for me the idea of boycotting Sony became a bit more real for me this week. My parents are visiting and they wanted to buy our family a video camera and me an MP3 player. That was pretty exciting for us as we have wanted one for a while, but it's been beyond our means.
We ended up getting a Canon MV830i, which looks like a pretty impressive little camera. The only feature that it didn't have that I wish it did was a microphone input. For the MP3 player I got an iRiver T30 512MB, which looks like it should work pretty well for recording as well, which would be nice.I could have looked at the Sony cameras and players, but I didn't. With the camera the Canon was a the best value, especially with $150 cash back offer that's on here in Australia right now. With the MP3 player, I just didn't bother looking at the Sony's.
Sony probably won't notice just one person not buying their gear, but if enough people do it could make a difference...
