Television is Sucking my Brain

Posted on Monday, January 30, 2006 in Personal
I stopped watching TV once before as I wrote about in my post Turning off the TV and now I am needing to do it again.

The other night I was sitting at home in front of the TV totally just waisting time. There were a lot of other things that I could have been doing that would have been productive, beneficial, good for me, etc. But instead I was killing brain cells watching TV. When I finally got up and walked away the name that my dad used to call the TV came to my head "The Idiot Box".

So once again I am shutting off the TV. On weekends we sit down and watch a video together as a family (last night it was Toy Story 2, which was fun), and Tamara and I will occasionally rent a movie together to watch, but I am going off television again for a while. Hopefully that will translate to more productivity with work, support raising and my relationships.
This is an ad revenue sharing blog.

Time will tell, but I know that last time I stopped watching the idiot box all of those things improved...

Hi, I'm Martin, and I'm a TV-holic. (Hi Martin!)
It is a tough habit to kick. It is so easy to veg-out in front of the tube, particularly when it becomes escapist from ministry burdens. I have learned that I get more out of playing with my kids, or talking to my wife. TV has a high price in relationships sometimes. I share your goal.

Hi Bill, hows it going? I originally tried to send this through your “contact me” link, but im not sure if it worked, so I'll repeat it here...
I got the internet a few months back and Ive been reading your blog for a while. Though I havent corresponded to you personally, Ive been enjoying hearing about how your doing. Congratulations on your marriage and two blessings! Sounds like your having an interesting time. I noticed that you were thinking about the whole T.V. issue. Yesterday I was checking out a blog site by Ben Witherington. Hes a guy that writes some very "scholarly" books, of which I have read one and thought it was very good. Anyway, He wrote a movie review, of which several people posted comments. One of these commentators brought up the issue of whether we should even be watching these movies. I didnt feel that his view was really responded to fairly, so I had to give a response. Anyway, Ive been wanting to write to you my veiw on that subject for a while, so I just thought you'd be interested in reading it. I struggled with the whole T.V. issue for a while, but Im relieved to say that that struggle is over and that Im no longer being tossed back and forth on the sea of doubt with that issue. My T.V. has been crowbarred and dumped, never to rise again. Its been over a year since then, and ive not only survived but my relationship with God has without doubt been improved by it. Anyway, the site is,

I suggest to read the whole page before reading my comments, so that my comments may be best understood.
Anyway, I also wanted to tell you that Im sorry that we've never contacted you. When you first left, you had sent us a few post cards, but I never reciprocated. It seems that long distance relationships havent been my strong point. Dispite our lack of communication, I wanted to let you know that we think about you often and pray for you. Even my kids know who you are and get excited when I read something on your blog. And you know that whole Amway experience? To me that whole chapter of my life was worth it for really only one main reason. That reason is you. That God touched you through it. That to me makes that entire time, even with all of the ungodly things that accompanied me through it, all worth it.
Love you guys.
Love Quinn, Sarah, Emily, Mikayla, Isaiah, and Israel.
