Delivering Web Site Training for our Staff

Posted on Thursday, January 26, 2006 in Web Development
I just spent my entire day delivering training here at Reef to Outback on how to use our web-site.  I definitely found it to be challenging as there is such a diverse grouping of people, both in areas that they work and also in their ability to use a computer.

There is quite a disparity between our different areas and their use of the web-site, which we have just spent over a year re-developing.  A lot of it is, I must admit, lack of training from myself as well as a lack of understanding of responsibility of the different team leaders and how important of a role our Web-Site plays in our marketing plan.

This is an ad revenue sharing blog.

The format that I used today was to break people into their ministry areas; Base Operations, Community Engagement, Training, Human Resources / School Registrar.  By breaking it up that way we were able to focus on the different areas that they needed to make changes and add content to.

One problem that I found however with that format was that within those groups there were a lot of different skill levels as far as writing for the web and creating web content.  This has caused me to re-think how I am going to do training next time.  I will stick to breaking it up into different ministry areas, as I did this time, but I will start the training the day before for those who do not feel as confident with they system as they.  It will add more work to me, but I will hopefully not get as many blank looks as I did today.

What have you found to be helpful to train your staff on not only how to, but also the importance of keeping your organizations web-site up to date and relevant with new content?
