Google Desktop is a Resource Hog

Posted on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 in Information Technology
I tried again to load Google Desktop on my computer since they had come up with a new version. It is still a resource hog and is causing quite a few problems on my system.  I say still because I had problems with it before that led me to removing the application.  You can read about that in the following story:
The problems this time around include:
  • Slowing down the system while I switch between applications, work in Outlook and browes the Internet
  • Outlook does not shut down properly so when I restart Outlook it takes about 5-minutes checking the mailbox for errors
My system is old (3+ years) but it's a 2Ghz P4m with 512MB of RAM, so I don't think that it's too much of a slouch.

Today I re-installed my firewall (Zone Alarm) and while I was doing that I had to close Google Desktop.  Since I closed it my computer has been running much faster again.

Tonight I will be removing Google Desktop from my system again. The ability to search on my computer is great, but I don't think that it is worth the perfomance hit that my system takes.

If anyone out there knows of a desktop search application that does not use a lot of system resources please let me know in the comments below...

I should've mentioned I'm posting because WDS does a ton of work to back-off and not index while you're using your computer. It also does a great job of indexing Outlook without messing it up
