Choosing a Baby Name - What's in a Name?

Posted on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 in Other
I had an interesting conversation a few weeks before Jessica was born with Jonathan Spainhour, who runs the kitchen at YWAM - Reef to Outback. We were talking about how important a name is.

If you think about it, a name is the one thing that is spoken over us the most in our lives. The bible says to "speak blessings over each other". It says that because there is signifigance in what is spoken over us. So the one thing that is spoke over us the most should have a lot of signifigance.

When Tamara and I were talking about what to name our children the meaning of the name was forefront in our thinking.

We can already see that with our first child, Caleb, his personality reflects the meaning of his name. Here is a definition of Caleb's name.
Caleb, a companion of Moses and Joshua, was noted for his astute powers of observation and fearlessness in the face of overwhelming odds; his devotion to God is symbolized by the "dog" in some traditions.
With our second child we wanted a name that we liked, and that had a meaning that we would want spoken over her every day. We choose the name Jessica because it means "God's Grace". I since found that it also means "God sees".

The meaning for both of these names are prayers that we pray over our children, and because it is their name it is also something that we speak over them many times each day.

For you information Tamara's name means "date palm, palm tree or spice" and my name means "determined or valiant protector".
