The Joys of Jet Lag
A few posts ago in Burnout in Christian Youth Ministry I hinted at the fact that we will be heading back to Canada next year for an extended holiday. We haven't been back since 2003, so it will be almost 4-years between visits this time and we are still feeling the need for a sabbatical from our work here at YWAM - Reef to Outback.
One of the things that we are not looking forward to is the jet lag that comes with traveling across eight time zones. Even though it usually only takes me a day or two to get over it Tamara has a really hard time with it. When we last did the trip with Caleb he seemed to handle it pretty well, but he was only 1 then, this time could be a bit more of a challenge with him.
I enjoyed reading this article over at "Jungle Pop" about overcoming jet lag with a young kid, More Adventures with Jet Lag:
... I woke up at 4:00am, feeling pretty alert and needing to pee. I was on the top bunk, and edged closer to the foot of the bed so I could come down the ladder. I poked my foot down, and as I was searching for the rung, I felt a little hand patting my foot. Sure enough, Junior was wide awake and was just staring out the window while lying on the footboard side of his bed.It kind of made me laugh in a way of "that'll be me next year". I only just started subscribing to the site, but is good. The site is written by a missionary coming back into the US from being away for three years in a developing nation. It's a really good read about the culture shock they are experiencing...
After taking care of my business, I tried getting him/us back to sleep, up in my top bunk. But after a few minutes, it was obvious we were both too alert. There was only one thing to do: head to Wal-Mart. Hey, I hadn't been in I-don't-know-how-long, and I don't think Junior had ever been. So we headed out to the minivan and to Wal-Mart we did ride...
