Doing things smart...

Posted on Monday, July 4, 2005 in Personal

Yesterday I spent around 5-hours around some pretty strong chemicals.  First I had to clean my deck with a an acid wash, and then I had to oil it.  Doing that wasn't what I did smart because I still have a splitting headache from doing it.

What I did do smart is that this time I used a stiff broom and a roller to wash and oil the deck.  Last time I used a paint brush and a hand scrubber with my dad to do it.  It look me a lot less time to do it this time that's for sure.  That said, next time I will probably need to use a brush again to get the oil between the timber slats.

Someone offered to pay for me to go paintballing yesterday.  For those of you who don't know, I love paintballing, but this time I said no because I wanted to stay home and spend some time with Caleb.  The irony if it though was that Caleb slept from 1:00 - 5:00 in the afternoon, which is something that he has not done for a long time and the paintball went from 12:30 - 5:30, so I only got another hour with him, but it was still a fun weekend.

I was thinking as I was oiling our deck about some stuff, well, a lot of stuff since I had so much time.  This was my profound thinking moment before the paint fumes overwelmed me, or maybe it was after...

With our house we quite often worry, think, plan and save for those big things like a kitchen renovation, deck, bathroom reno., etc.  But really, those things are not the most important things that we do to our houses.  The most important things that we do are the maintenance stuff.  The stuff that often goes unseen, but that if we did not do it our house could fall down, or in the case of oiling the deck, the timber could crack and become unusable.

Well, that got me thinking, how often do we plan for that big vacation, or seminar, or self-help getaway, yet we neglect the everyday things that keep us going.  Stuff like spending time with your spouse and kids, or making that extra time everyday to spend reading a, for lack of a better word, self-help book.  Or for me making the effort every morning to get up out of bed early to have a cup of coffee and spend time reading the bible and praying for the day ahead...

Anyways, that was my deep thought for the weekend.

Got to home for some bangers and mash for tea.  (That's sausages and mashed potatoes for supper in case you weren't too sure what I was talking about.)
