Web Server (WAMP)
Tamara usually finds these posts really boring, since they talk all about work and technology stuff, but here we go.I am going to finally load a local web-server on my laptop to try out some of the technologies that I have been playing with. Those include SugarCRM (Conact Management), blogging software and forum software to begin with. I am right now trying to figure out the best Windows/Apache/MySQL/PHP (WAMP) server to load, but I need one that I can shut off when I don't need it, which will be most of the time. There are a lot of options to choose, the hard part if picking one. Any advise out there?
Because we are looking at using SugarCRM, or something similar for our contact management system I am going to try to get it running locally to play with it. The main thing that it is missing for us from what we can tell is reporting and mail/letter merging for print. It looks like it will do a good job with e-mail merge, but not print merge. I am going to try a few different things, including connecting directly to the MySQL database an outside client (like MS Access) to try the mail merging and reporting, but I'm quite out of my depth, so we will see how we go with it.
As for the blogging and forums we are looking at wanting to include those with some of our upcoming web projects, so I am wanting to figure out as much as I can about them so that we can figure out the best way to implement them.
By having it all on my local computer it will hopefully give me more flexibility in trying out new products for the projects. Right now I am running it on an old box that I loaded Linux on, but it's a slow machine and I can only access it when I am attached to the network.
The three that I am compairing right now to install are The Uniform Server, Apache Friends XAMPP and Apache2Triad. I am running Apache Frieds XAMPP on my Linux box, so I am leaning towards it, but I need to make sure that I can turn it off easily when I don't want it running. I'll let you know what I choose, but as I said, I could also use some advice.
