Update on our YWAM Outreach to Thailand

Posted on Friday, April 11, 2008 in Information Technology
In my last article, Children at Risk Video - Lost in the Crowd, I had mentioned that Reef to Outback had a team in Thailand right now outreaching to Thai Prostitutes. They just sent an outreach update, and here are a few snippets from it:
"Last Thursday we went and visited a ministry called "Night Light". Night Light is a Jewelry Company that sells Jewelry all over the world. Located in Nana, one of the major red light districts in the heart of Bangkok, it is a very literal light in the darkness. Night Light is a very young ministry, but you wouldn't be able to tell that by the 70+ women they had working for them making jewelry. Each of these 70 women used to be employed in the Sex Trade and have now left COMPLETELY making a living making jewelry for Night Light. The global sales of this jewelry pays the women's salary

...

Jess, Jill, Sara and Steph went into the heart of the red light district and talked to women who were working that night. Jess said she could literally feel Jesus walking beside her the entire time, and had conversations with women in the bars.

...

We are immersing ourselves in the issue of the Sex Trade. It is dark, it is sick, it is devilish, unbelievably perverted and excruciating, but God is there. God is in the bars, God is in the heart of a redeemed woman, God is in every piece of jewelry, God is there. God is making people new. And it is just the beginning."
You can read the full outreach update from our School of Music in Missions team on the YWAM - Reef to Outback web-site.

Time for New Laptop

Posted on Monday, November 5, 2007 in Information Technology
Earlier this year I was given a laptop to replace my old Dell Inspiron 2650. The person who gave me the laptop had been given one by work and didn't have need for his old laptop, so he donated it to me.

Unfortunately the laptop has now died.

The timing for this really couldn't be much worse. We are in the middle of trying to raise money to finish our house (about $50,000 still needed), and now at the same time we need to figure out what to do about replacing the laptop. I won't write all the words that have passed through my mind since discovering this, but there were quite a few choice words shared...

For the interim I will be using a 4.5 year old laptop from work, so hopefully that will be able to last me until we get the house sorted so that then we look at the laptop issue. I must say though, I am a bit frustrated right now.

I'll be sharing more about the technical problems with our Compaq Presario V4000 over on Tech on Tour, but it will probably take me a while to get around to writing the article since I don't have my own computer any more.

Find International Country Codes for Phone Calls

Posted on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 in Information Technology
While setting up a few toll-free phone numbers for calling our YWAM base here in Australia I came across a site that tells you all the telephone country codes that you need to make international phone calls from one nation to another.
It's a great tool as it seems that every country has it's own phone codes to call outside the country, and then of course you actually need to know the international country code for the nation that you are trying to dial.

Apple Mac Store at JCU still sucks for service

Posted on Monday, January 8, 2007 in Information Technology
Up until now the Apple Centre at James Cook University (JCU) has been the only one in town, and we have been extremely disapointed with the service from the Apple store at JCU (read here and here for more) and now we have even more to complain about.

A guy that I work with here just took his laptop into the new Mac store here in Townsville (I can't find the web-site yet). He took it there to get his screen and speakers replaced as they have been acting up ever since he got it back from the Mac Centre at JCU. When the service guy at the new Mac Store in Townsville opened up the computer he discovered that the technicians at JCU left out 25 screws! That to me is just negligent, lazy and sloppy and there is no good reason for it.

The new store in town so far seems to be quite competent in their support and help. Time will tell if that continues...

A Very Entertaining YWAM Retirement Announcement

Posted on Friday, September 1, 2006 in Information Technology
While I was at home with Jessica this morning Sam put a very entertaining message on our Microsoft Sharepoint Intranet. It was so entertaining I just can't help but share it with you all...
Someone is Retiring from YWAM - Reef to Outback

This person has been with us over five years and is announcing her retirement.  So let’s give her some space and try and not bombard her with too much work before her departure.  Terminal Server 2 has been good to us but let’s try to give her some space on her last weeks with us.  So if you have a terminal server needs feel free to use 1 or 3 cause, well as most of you know, 2 has been having a hard time cause she knows she’s getting old.  And talking behind her back like some of you have been is uncalled for so please stop calling me and telling me about her personal problems because old age is something I can't help.  So only if necessary use Terminal Server 2. Thank you.
Many of our servers have been causing us problems in the last few months and our Terminal Server 2 looks like it may be the first of about eight servers that we will be retiring...

Free Phone Calls using Gizmo

Posted on Thursday, July 20, 2006 in Information Technology
In what looks like an amazing deal Gizmo is offering free phone calls to Australia, Canada, the USA and many other nations around the world. For some nations you get free calls to land lines and mobiles, while for most nations you get free calls only to landlines.

For those of us who are living far away from our family this is a deal that is almost too good to be true. It also shows us how cheap technology is making communications, especially telephone calls.

I have not actually tried using Gizmo before, although I did set-up an account with them a while ago because they were offering a free US phone number for their users (Gismo Area777).

You can read more about this deal on the Gizmo web-site, and on VoIP Watch: Gizmo Goes All Calls Free...Almost, where I originally read the story.

Update - It pays to read the fine print as there is some interesting commentary about this in the comments in the following article about the service:
