Thank You to our Aussie Diggers

Posted on 8/22/2008 in Other

Shannon Noll in TownsvilleEarlier this year we went down to the Strand here in Townsville for a welcome home concert put on for Australian Soldiers who have served overseas in the last few years. Townsville is a "garrison" city, and a lot of our troops have been in Afganistan and East Timor in the last year. The city put on a well deserved concert and parade for them.

At the concert was Shannon Noll, Claire Clarke, Garry Bradbury, 1RAR band, and Beccy Cole. The music was fantastic and the general feel at the event was one to celebrate and thank the troops and their contribution to Australia and the world.

Beccy Cole in Townsville

I think that Beccy Cole's song "Poster Girl" highlights the general feel of most of us in Townsville towards the troops:

For that song Poster Girl Beccy Cole won three "Golden Guitars" for Single of the Year, Song of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. You can listen to more of Beccy Cole on her MySpace page here.

Note: The comedian Garry Bradbury was very inappropriate for a family event. His jokes may have been funny in the field for just the troops, but definitely not for all the kids at the event. He got very few laughs after the first few minutes.

My Australian Citizenship Has Been Approved

Posted on 3/12/2008 in Other

I got a letter a few days ago stating that my Australian Citizenship Application has been approved.

After passing my Australian Citizenship test last month it only took about a month for my citizenship application to be approved.

My Australian Citizenship won't be final until I have completed my citizenship oath. That probably won't happen until after the local council election later this month as the citizenship ceremonies are organised by the local council.

My New Favourite County Music Blog

Posted on 2/26/2008 in Other

I've been spending the last few days slowly looking through a new Country Music Blog that I came across. The web-site isn't new, but it's new to me.

The site is very well laid out, easy to navigate, and has a lot of great song reviews. Most of the country music song reviews include a link to where you can listen to the song (although some links don't work from Australia, bummer).

For a good sample of a country music single review check out the review of George Strait - "I Saw God Today".

How I'm Increasing my Productivity Today

Posted on 1/20/2008 in Other

Today I am unsubscribing to most of the e-mail newsletters that I have signed up for.

Most of the e-mail newsletters related to Internet Marketing all push the same sales stuff on me, over and over again, and very few that I have been subscribed to actually provide valuable content. I figure that if I only stay subscribed to one or two of them, I should get all the important stuff come through anyway.

The newsletters that I am subscribed to for CNet and other on-line publications are great, and full of original and valuable content, but most the content I can get in an RSS feed, so I don't think that I will be missing anything.

Most mornings now I log in and see over 30 e-mails in the box! How the heck did I ever let that happen?

Time to simplify things... It's time to start reading less, and writing more.

Next step, reducing the number of RSS feeds I subscribe to.

Questions that Missionaries Hear in South East Asia

Posted on 12/18/2007 in Other

Being on outreach is always a cultural experience for our staff and students. The thing that we don't often take into account is that visiting a foreign country is also a cultural experience for the people living there that we are outreaching to.

Wan Dee is a Church Panter in Southern Thailand. She's an American who has been in Thailand for 8 years and runs the OceanicThai web-site, plus a few others. She has collected a few of the interesting questions that she has been asked in her years planting a church in Thailand. Here are a few of my favourites:
  • "Why do you only take 1 shower a day?"
  • "Why do you foreigners wear such embarrassingly tiny swimsuits and clothes?"
  • "Why do you think this food is spicy? My baby even eats it."
  • "Why are you foreigners so fat?"
There are a bunch more on her site, and you can read them all at OceanicThai - Why Do You Do That?

Source: Missionary Blog - I'm sure this is what they're thinking...

Brad Paisley - "Letter to Me" Free Download

Posted on 12/14/2007 in Other

Good Housekeeping is currently offering a free download of Brad Paisley's new single, Letter to Me.

Check it out over at Good Housekeeping: Brad Paisley Song Giveaway.

I'm listening to it right now and it's classic Brad Paisley, very good.

Brad Paisley's web-site is fantastic if you want to listen to some of Brad Paisley's music or view some of his videos. Brad Paisley has a very wide range of music including some very funny songs (Celebrity & Alcohol), and some very moving songs (When I Get Where I'm Going & Wiskey Lullaby).

One interesting thing is that two of those songs deal with the same topic (alcohol), but in very different ways, with very different consequences for the characters of the songs.

Something that I really like about Country Music is how most of the songs tell a story, and Brad Paisley is very good at doing that.
