Want to be a Pirate?

Posted on Monday, July 9, 2007 in Other
This game looks like it could be a lot of fun, especially if you like pirates, and who doesn't like pirates.

Tales of Pirates is a free MMORPG (massively (or massive) multiplayer online role-playing game) that allows you to create a pirate character and play along with new friends, and if you get your mates signed up as well, you can play along with them as well.

It looks a lot like other MMORPGs out there, except that you get to be a pirate, which could be fun.

The client is a free 286MB download. I won't actually be trying it out myself, as I already have too much to do and not enough time, but if anyone does get a chance to try it let us know how it goes in the comments below.

Proud to be a Canadian

Posted on Thursday, July 5, 2007 in Other
In response to a comment on my "Happy Canada Day" post I present these reasons that I am glad to be a Canadian:

Some Canadian Inventions:
  • Insulin
  • Telephone
  • Light Bulb
  • Zipper
  • Canadarm
  • Standard Time (current time-zones)
  • Ski-Doo
  • Basketball
  • Walkie-Talkie
  • Electric Oven
  • Radio Voice Transmission
A few other reasons:
  • The first ever recorded baseball game was played in Canada on June 4, 1838
  • Canada is the homeland of modern ice hockey
  • Canada is the worlds second largest nation
  • We share the worlds longest undefended border with the US
  • Two official languages (English and French)
Some possible controversial reasons:
I could go on, but I want to leave the comments open for other people to comment.

Oh yeah, and Happy 4th of July to my American readers. There are some pretty good things about your country too.

Posted on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 in Other
No Greater Joy is a free, bi-monthly publication dedicated to successful child-training, strengthening marriages and families, and supporting home schooling.

It appears to be available free for international addresses, so I have subscribed to it to have a look. Tamara and I have been talking a lot lately about how we want to learn more about how to raise our two children, so we will see if this magazine gives us any good tips.

Click here to subscribe to No Greater Joy Magazine.

Happy Canada Day.

Funny thing happens here at Reef to Outback on Canada Day, usually nothing at all... The 4th of July is celebrate a lot in typical, boisterous, American style, but Canada Day goes by quietly.

Anyways, in celebration of Canada Day, please enjoy these two videos...

I hope you enjoyed them...

20% Off Sale on Books from word.com.au

Posted on Friday, June 22, 2007 in Other
There is currently a storewide 20% off sale at word.com.au from June 21 - July 1.

Word.com.au is an Australian Christian book store that I have not actually heard of before, but it competes directly with Koorong, which is currently having a 15% off storewide sale on all items sold at the store, including books, CDs, DVDs, etc.

So if you are looking for a bargain on some Christian books, check them out.

No Such Thing as Time Away

Posted on Saturday, April 14, 2007 in Other
I was reading an article in Canada's National Post "Financial Post - You Deserve a Break When?" about how technology has rendered time away from work as not really being time away. In the world of  increased pressures at work, wireless technology (think mobile phones, wireless Internet and BlackBerrys) and electronic messenging it is virtually impossible to actually "get away" from work.

Always being available is not good for your health. Sure, some peole relish the increased pace that life and business is running at these days, but the increased pressures are causing problems in many others. It can effect not only peoples physical health, but certainly their emotional and relational health as well.

Emotional Health Problems

Always being preoccupied with work can never be a good thing for your emotional well being. If you can never truely shut down and remove yourself from work then there is no way to relieve the stress that is brought on by a hectic work day. Being truely away from work is the time to get refreshed and renewed and to view work from a healthy distance, which can allow you to gain a healthy perspective on what you are doing, and why you are doing it.

Without healthy time away from work you create a perfect recipe for becoming stressed out and burned out.

Relational Health Problems

How many times are you out for a meal or coffee with someone only be be interrupted by a phone call, text message or e-mail. What would have previously been a one-hour lunch conversation, interrupted only by ordering, paying and eating, now becomes only a 20-minute disjointed conversation because of the constant interruptions.

Because of the pressure of my Dad's job even he finally caved in a few weeks ago and got himself a BlackBerry. Now during commercials or intermissions in the hockey he can now browse through e-mail messages instead of chatting with the family. I understand the need for this with his job, but it comes at a personal relational cost.

Physical Health Problems

There are more cold and sick days being taken now by people because of the physical effects of stress on people's lives. Stress seriously degrades the quality of life that people experience. It can lead to heart problems, headaches, high blood pressure, diabetes and many other ailments. According to this site 43% of adults suffer adverse health effects from stress and 75% - 90% of all doctor's visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints.

Stress can also lead to substance abuse, including drugs and alcohol and over indulgence of food (binge eating, etc.).

Unfortunately these challenges are not exclusive to big business. They are prevalent in all industries, including NGOs, non-profits and ministries. Each person needs to find the healthy balance between work, fun and family, but to find that balance something always needs to give.
