Update on Caleb

Posted on Friday, October 20, 2006 in Personal
Earlier this week we decided to bring Caleb home with us. The Townsville Hospital wasn't doing anything to help him and was only distressing him with three wash-outs every day. The doctors at the hospital didn't want to do anything any more evasive then that, even though from all that we could see they needed to do something that might actually help him. Needless to say we were a bit frustrated at this.

Tamara wrote an update on our YWAM web-site, that you can read. She gives a much better description of it then I could:
Caleb's regular doctor was also quite frustrated that they didn't do anything more then what Tamara described, so she is going to be quite aggressive with his treatment.

Yesterday we gave Caleb a sedative at home that was supposed to knock him out in 30-minutes for a procedure to manually remove the bowel obstruction. Three and a half hours later Caleb finally fell asleep so Tamara took Caleb to the doctor's office, where he decided to wake up, so they were not able to do anything to help him yesterday.

This morning we doubled Caleb's dose of the sedative (under the doctors orders, don't worry, we aren't self medicating him). Hopefully that will knock him out enough for the procedure to remove the obstruction.

Please pray for success...

Caleb still in Townsville Hospital

Posted on Sunday, October 15, 2006 in Personal
Well, Caleb is still in hospital despite the original plan that should have had him home today (yesterday by now actually).

He has had four washouts, 2 litres of special medicine pumped into his stomach and an x-ray. All to say that he is actually in worse shape now then before he went in... I say worse off because now he is not able to pass gas because the bowel obstructions seems to have moved and is now stopping the wind. He now has a very distended belly and is not at all comfortable.

Tonight is Tamara's turn to sleep in with him and I am at home with Jessica. I have spent the last three nights in hospital but tonight Tamara wanted to be there so that she could ask the doctors the questions in the morning when they do their rounds.

I must say that I am a bit frustrated with the treatment that Caleb has been receiving from the doctors at the Townsville Hospital. From when he was actually admitted on Thursday he did not see a doctor again until yesterday (Saturday). The notes apparently said that he had been seen, but when that doctor was there Caleb was having a shower to the doctor only looked at the notes.

One thing that I will say though is that the treatment that the nurses at the Townsville Hospital has been excellent. They are very caring for all the kids in the Childrens Ward at the Townsville Hospital.

From what the nurses have said it looks like we might be in the hospital until Tuesday, which is pretty crazy. Today (Sunday) Caleb is due for three more washouts, but if that doesn't work I don't know what they might be able to try.

There was another family there with a child with a similar problem that has been seeing a lot of different specialists about it, and they have not yet had any luck either. Their kid is going through the same treatment as Caleb, but we are not sure if they have had any more success since this morning when we last talked to them.

Update on Caleb - Please Keep Praying

Posted on Friday, October 13, 2006 in Personal
Caleb is now on his third day in hospital and they have not yet had any luck in cleaning out his system.

He is a very tired and bored boy at the hospital right now.

Please continue to pray that we would have resolution to his health problems today or tomorrow. He is supposed to be discharged tomorrow, but if we haven't actually had any results we don't want him coming home just the same as when he went in...

Some Prayer Request - Please Pray

Posted on Friday, October 6, 2006 in Personal
These last few weeks have been kind of intense for us as a family. We have a few prayer request that we would like to put out for people to prayer for / with us about:
  1. Caleb's Health - He is going into hospital next week for four days
  2. Tamara's Health - Her fatigue has gotten a lot worse in the last month or so
  3. Our Finances - Last month we lost $500 per month in financial support
  4. Our House Renovations - They are going very slowly and the cost is increasing
1. Caleb's Health
Ever since Caleb was born he has had trouble with constipation. It was always an interesting topic of conversation when he would be grunting as a baby in our staff meetings. Since he has gotten older though it has continued to be a problem and yesterday we went to see a specialist about it. What the specialist told us is that Caleb is so blocked up that he will need to go to hospital next week for four days to get his system cleaned up. We will also need to completely change his diet and possibly have him on laxatives permanently. If all that doesn't work then he may have to have surgery... You can read more about it at
Bill and Tamara's Reef to Outback Staff Page - Hospital.

2. Tamara's Health
Tamara suffers from Chronic Fatigue and has for quite a few years. In the last month or so her health has deteriorated quite a bit and the fatigue has increased a lot. Tamara's parent's actually move back to Adelaide in only a few weeks time, so with Tamara's current health this could be quite a challenge for us. She is needing to sleep almost every afternoon (which Caleb doesn't always allow) and many nights she is in bed before 8:00. Unfortunately sleep doesn't really help, but it's all that she feels able to do sometimes.

3. Our Finances
You can read more details about this at How to Survive a Paycut, but the summary is that while we have been trying to raise our level us support we actually lost $500 a month in support last month. We are full-time volunteers and depend on sponsors to meet our financial needs, so this is quite a challenge for us.

4. Our House Renovations
As most of you I think would know we purchased our current house almost a year ago now and are in the middle of our renovations. It has been quite a struggle to get builders and tradesmen to actually get the work done on it. You can read about our house renovations at our Renovate Australia blog. We would appreciate your prayer for this as we need to get it done to a certain point before we go to Canada next year (which is actually a fifth prayer point that you can read about here: Bill and Tamara's Reef to Outback Staff Page - O Canada).

Thank you for your prayers...

Where was Caleb's Birthday Party

Posted on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 in Personal
In one of my previous posts, Using Google Maps for Party Planning, I had asked you readers to guess where we were holding Caleb's birthday party based on the Google Map photo that I had put in the post. I only had one guess from Dawnie and she was right.

The place that we held the party is called Sheriff Park and is located on the Ross River (It is also called Riverside Park in one of our maps). You can see where in Townsville it is on Google Maps: Sheriff Park.

Caleb had a great party, with lots of his friends there. Sheriff Park has a really fun climbing structure at it (it's the star/mess looking thing at the lower right of the circle around the park) and the kids had a blast on that. We were actually at a picnic table at the left side of the circle around the park, near the dark bit that is actually a play ground. Unfortunately this is as close as we can get with the resolution of the images in Townsville, but it gives a pretty good idea.

I will be putting some pictures up soon of the party, once I get them onto my computer.
