My Latest Home Improvement Squidoo Pages

Posted on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 in Web Development
I've been trying to add content and stuff onto Squidoo, which is a site that allows you to create a "lense" about specific topics. I have been creating a few lately about different things I have blogs about, or write about on other sites.

Here is a list of Squidoo Lense that I am currently working on:
  • Renovating in Australia
This is a page that features some of my more popular posts on my Renovation Site.
  • Townsville Builder

Our builder here in Townsville does not have a web-site. I set this page up to highlight him and some of what he has done on our house. Working with him on our house has been a real pleasurable experience so far.
  • Termite Control
Termites are a huge problem here in Australia. This is a page with some of what I have learned about them since owning a house and property in Australia.
It is actually quite easy to set-up Squidoo lenses about pretty much anything. If you are interested in creating your own lense then head over to Squidoo and sign up.

I have a few more lenses in the works, but these are the ones I have been working on recently. One of the ones that I plan to work on soon is for myself, Bill Hutchison. Because Squidoo ranks well in the search engines I hope to be able to set up the lense for my own name to rank well in the search engines so people can find me easily on-line.

Voice for the Voiceless Australia Web Site

Posted on Friday, March 21, 2008 in Web Development
The last two weeks I've been working like crazy to get a new web-site for Voice for the Voiceless up and running. I had a week to set-up the site and get it running before a radio advertising campaign was launched.

You can check out the results of my work at www.voiceforthevoiceless.com.au.

Voice for the Voiceless raises awareness of Gender Based Injustice issues. Awareness is raised though a 30-day prayer guide and though Voice in the Dark Concerts. Both of which you can find out more about on the site.
This is an ad revenue sharing blog.

One of the coolest features of the site, I think, is the embedded live video stream for the concert that will be running tomorrow (Saturday) night. We have also embedded recordings of some of the stories from the 30-day prayer guide.

You can read a bit of the process that I went though in setting up the site over at Using Wordpress for a Basic Web-Site - Voice for the Voiceless Australia.

Here are some pretty good videos highlighting some of the dangers in posting everything and anything on-line:

The Importance of Replying to Comments

Posted on Thursday, July 12, 2007 in Web Development
There is a very well written article over at Missionary Blogs entitled "Hello? Please respond... ? - Missionary blog tip #10". How often have you commented on a blog and maybe asked a question, but never had a reponse?

Responding to every comment on a blog can be a daunting thing for a blogger (not me as I don't seem to get many comments), but some sort of response is needed if you want to build up loyal readership. This is important no matter what the topic of your blog, but it is especially important if you are using your blog for communication to people supporting you in missions.

I must confess that I go through seasons with this. Although I try to remember the importance of responding it can slip sometimes, especially when life get busy.

What do you reckon? Why not pop over to Missionary Blogs and add to the discussion.

When Will Telstra.com Support Firefox

Posted on Friday, May 4, 2007 in Web Development
Since I have been out of Australia for almost three months I have had to rely a lot more on on-line banking and paying my bills on-line. We bank with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which has pretty good on-line banking facilities. Through there we are able to pay most of our bills, and it works great with Internet Explorer, or Firefox.

Our phone plan is through Telstra and I need to pay for that on their web-site by credit card. Unfortunately I can't use Firefox, my prefered browser, to make payments on the Telstra web-site, I have to resort back to using Microsoft Internet Explorer. That's a bit frustrating, especially when I forget that fact between making payments and then get worried when Telstra refuses to accept my credit card details.

If this is a problem with Firefox I wonder how many other browsers and platforms have problems with Telstra.com? Does anyone out there know if Mac users can use it, or Linux users? Has anyone read of any plans by Telstra to fix this problem?
