Learning to cope with extreme stress can be difficult due to the variety of reasons for its cause. Considering how everything affects an individual person is of significance. People have highly variable and unpredictable responses to severe trauma. While there is a lot of knowledge about the reactions, how they will show up in an individual is unknown. Just two extremes are immediate responses and symptoms and highly delayed yet different reactions. Some people, when dealing with the same condition may show very few symptoms or adverse reactions. We must say that its a varied scene when dealing with extreme stress.
Extreme stress can arise from many situations, it doesn't just happen during catastrophic or acutely traumatic events.
Constant stress and tension in a home environment could result in family members suffering from extreme stress. If a parent, or both of them, are the source of this stress, then you can help yourself by realizing people always have choices when it comes to behavior. A positive approach to this situation can be through honest and open communication. One approach is to sit down with your parents and explain to them how their behavior makes you feel. If you felt comfortable doing so, you could even suggest some form of counseling.
Simple communication has immense power and the potential for healing. Talking to people you know is the beginning to making real progress. Just plainly talking about the experience in what ever manner it comes out can be very helpful. There are other avenues to explore if some people don't want to do that. Writing down thoughts and talking about it on paper is another way to express ourselves. The need to just let it out is something that everyone can understand. During these times, it is not always important for people to say anything, just listen.
Children will need to have professional intervention if they have been exposed to extreme stress or trauma situations. Obviously a child is not capable of understanding what is happening within, and there is only the manifestation of the symptoms. A child in this situation might show signs of extreme withdrawal, exhibit aggressiveness, or have physical and other symptoms of stress reactions. Depending on the situation, the parents may need to be involved so they can help their child deal with the stress.
There is a huge difference between adults, young children and teens when it comes to effectively dealing with extreme stress. Especially for young children, but also for all other ages, the best avenue may be professional treatment. Of course adults and teens may need ongoing support for a long time depending on the nature of the trauma. Good friends and family that offer a personal support system can play a major and positive role in recovery regardless of the case.
