CCTV cables are one of the crucial items used to install Close Circuit Television Cameras. The image captured by CCTV camera gets converted into an electrical signal which gets transmitted to the monitor or video recorder through cables. High-quality cables must be used with CCTV cameras as they aid in high quality video signal whereas low-quality cable provides low picture quality.

The length of the cable must be adequate and they must not be bulky so that camera installation is neat. During camera installation, take care that the CCTV cables do not run alongside high electrical power lines and that they have safe distance between them. Some extra cable provision must be kept in case you need to relocate the camera.

Types of CCTV Cables

There are basically two types of cables mainly used when installing CCTV camera, namely coaxial cable and twisted pair cable.

• Coaxial Cable: The coaxial cables are the most commonly used CCTV cables. The cable is made up of round conducting wire, covered by an insulating spacer, surrounded by a cylindrical conducting sheath, usually surrounded by a final insulating layer. This construction helps in the better transmission of electrical signals. When installing a camera using coaxial cable, it is important to avoid sharp bends in the cable as it will affect the impedance of the cable. In CCTV, the coaxial cables are terminated with a BNC connector.
• Twisted Pair Cable: Twisted pair cables are also used to install CCTV cameras and are a suitable option other than coaxial cable. These cables are also known as balanced video transmission cables. Twisted pair cables have 4 pairs per cable and this enables it to carry 4 video signals in one cable. Therefore, with one cable, you can connect 4 cameras at one location. Twisted pair cables also eliminate any kind of noise.
