Zoe came through her surgery extremely well. It took about a half hour and she went right to recovery, where she awakened ouchy but pretty happily stoned on pain meds. She slept most of the next 24 hours, doing a regular cycle of liquids and morphine. One thing baby girl most certainly did not like was the catheter. It was mummified to her hand with a wrap of bandages that traveled up her arm and she was not at all pleased about it. On Wednesday night we had to put an arm board on her because having found herself unable to remove it (or to coax anyone else to), she decided the best course of action was to chew it off.
Kind of a no-no.
She was receiving fluids through it she really needed, as little ones tend to refuse liquids orally after the surgery and there was a danger of dehydration, so she really needed to keep it in. Plus, such rough-trade removal results in major owwies. Fortunately, she was taking liquids well so we got to take it off of her the next morning. The first thing she wanted when we got home was food, and she hasn't stopped eating since. Apparently getting nothing but liquids for 36 hours flipped a switch - she's topped off the hollow leg and then some.
The inside of her throat looks gross, though. Like, wicked gross. Not inflamed or infected or nasty or gooey, but the scabs are visible and after she's been awake and taking fluids for awhile they soften and turn funny colors. By funny I mean oh my god...that can't be natural. I'll spare the specifics. No need to thank me.
The improvement in her breathing is nothing short of phenomenal, though. She snored a little bit the first night after the surgery because of the swelling, and has slept quietly ever since. Her snore is gone, and her sleep seems much more productive and recuperative. I have stood by her to see how she'd do and haven't seen a single incident of apnea since she came home. Dr. Y knows his stuff. Zoe's due for her checkup tomorrow and I'm giving serious consideration to asking Dr. Y to yank mine too.
Just kidding. I'm almost forty years old. No one does tonsil removals for old farts like me. Gotta be one of the young people for that particular little delight.
It would be nice to get a full night's sleep though. Especially if in the process I was able to do so without sounding like a rusty chainsaw chewing up an aluminum baseball bat.
That's why I sleep sans Hubbins in my own room, kiddies. Aaaargh.
Anyhoo...
I got out for a little while yesterday, which was bliss. It took driving to three different places to find the refills for my notebook; does no one but me carry a 6 (and change) by 4 (and change) writer's notebook? If that's the case, I don't see how any of you people get along without it. Every idea I get for my characters, plot and everything else about the book goes in there. Maybe I should just send my notes to a publisher. Heh. Also, if I find a book online I want to check out at Borders or a CD of Pagan music, or something to be researched later, it all gets written down in the notebook. I love that thing.
Yet finding refills seems to be next to impossible.
For future reference; the new Office Depot at FSK Mall has them. Or they did until I bought out their last four packs. But I'm sure they will get more.
My brother gave me a Borders gift card for my birthday so I bopped on over there as well, and I gotta say, their metaphysical section was extremely disappointing. It's always been pretty nice before so I'm assuming that perhaps there's a sudden upsurge in the Pagan population...? That'd be nice. Not too many of us lurking about the area, which is extremely conservative. There was no 2007 Magical Almanac to be found, however, the store did have the 2007 Wicca Almanac so I got that instead. It goes from spring to spring, so that's actually pretty convenient, as yesterday was literally the first chance I've had this year to get out to the book store. I love the alamancs LLewellyn makes; there are always good articles and information to go along with the calendar.
Gotta go. More later.
