Code Craft
The art, science and craft of writing quality software

Aug. 18, 2005 - Mind Reading Markup Language (MRML) 0.5 (theta) released

Posted in Humor

Im excited to announce that Mind Reading Markup Language (MRML or mur-muhl) has been released to theta testing as version 0.5!<idea>Kevins Code Craft site is great!</idea>

As many of my close friends know I have been tirelessly working on MRML for the past five years. <project emotion=empathy target=Kevin/>.To create MRML I was first required to write my own language called LATE (Language for Amplifying Theta Emissions). Although some of you who are familiar with LATE and MRML have suggested that it is easier to work in LATE than to use MRML, I felt it was important that the MRML specification be XML compliant. <idea>LATE is bad, XML and MRML are good</idea>

It is my hope that later versions of MRML can be written entirely in MRML and towards that goal I am working on the past tag.The expected syntax will be <past change=true date=2005/8/17 32:59">some change to the past</past>. Using the past tag I believe I can remove LATE altogether.

Some people have asked about the practical usage of MRML. Beyond its clear utility in conveying website information, it also provides an improved query capability. For example, by adding this tag: <get>desired content description</get> Google can be improved so that fewer queries are need. Likewise, adding the <transfer target=reader source=writer>functional spec ideas</transfer> tag to a feature specification can greatly improve offshore development. Sometime the <clarify>whatever I was meaning</clarify> tag may also be necessary. Finally, the <do>what I mean</do> and <get>what I want</get> tags have proven extremely powerful in early trials.

Below is some example MRML for your reference. I have made it active in the document to speed the learning process:

<belief strength=maximum>This is by far the best article Ive ever read</belief>

<ignore>article faults</ignore>

<belief strength=maximum>I will send this article to all my friends, family and co-workers</belief>

<erase>sense of proper work etiquette regarding company email</erase>

<erase>sense of unease at being manipulated</erase>

<predict>Everyone will be reading Kevins blog. It will be bigger than Slashdot</predict>

The last big advantage of MRML over other technologies is that completeness is not required. If you use the doctype=intent you can leave out anything that you would have intended to include but didnt get around to.

The release is available on the Psychic Friends Network (psi.net). There is also a brain-torrent feed. If you have been selected to be a theta tester you already know it. In fact you have known it for some time.

Code Craft is the place for my thoughts, rants, ideas and occassional jokes on what it means to write code, why some people are better at it than others, and how we think about software in general.
