an addiction and a problem
Today has been a strange day...almost
living in a perminant out of body experience. I have been so tired
since my USA trip that I have been using unhealthy amounts of caffiene
to stay awake.
I need to get to bed earlier - but am struggling to try to fit everything in!!
I am really hoping to be in bed fairly early today.
I am going to go down to 4 caffiene drinks a day starting tomorrow -
hopefully it will not slow my productivity any more then being tired
already has..... I am anticipating headaches galore.
This is going to have to be a short entry as I can feel myself fading
fast...I am going to try to stay up to talk to my buddy in australia -
we shall see how that goes!!!
SLEEP is a beautiful state to be in!!

Encouragement makes the world go round
After being encouraged by Bill to write some more in here I realise how much of slacker I have become!!!
I spent the last week in the USA doing VSAT training so I can set up
satellite terminals anywhere they are needed. It was great training and
the guys who set it up really know what they are talking about!!!
We went to an office in North Carolina that was linked to one in
atlanta with a HUGE TV and video conferencing link so if you are in NC
you can chat to the guys in Atlanta and work with them, they were also
on the same phone system so if the phone in NC rings it also rings in
Atlanta...it was cool. - they have a designated line between the two
facilities so they put this in there to keep good communications.
I flew back with Delta Airlines - who cancelled one of my flights on
the suspicion there may be lightning later - so I had to cut a meeting
at the airport short and leave earlier which was not cool cause I had
to wait around in Atlanta for an extra 4 hours with nothing to
do.....American airports are SOOO boring - people should look at
singapore and learn something!!
Ulani and I have moved into an apartment for 6 weeks this time....a relatively long stay - so we are enjoying that.
I found a software program called Google Earth this week - it is
awesome you can zoom in so close and see buildings and junk - even the
names of the peaks on my wife's island in the Solomon Islands is named
- go to google and check it out.

Work and Play
This week has been tough one - with so many tasks I am not sure where to start......I guess the beginning works.
THe customisation of the open source contact management solution
(SugarCRM) is going well....there is a lot of it that is totally
useless to us and a lot to be added - but this is my first attempt and
real database design - so I am sure there will be a few times I have to
scrap it and start again.
I am quite frustrated with sharepoint - I have not managed to get the
search or email me facilities working yet...In principle it is easy -
but principle does not mean squat with this!!
After a long day yesterday I went to a friend's house and we had a
mini- Australian reunion. 4 of the guys who flew out for my wedding
were there - and we sat in a jacuzzi with various beverages for about 2
hours - most relaxing. After a bit of pool and music I headed home
realising I was going to pay the next morning for being out late...and
I was right I am knackered today...oh well at least it is friday...
Tomorrow....Come on the Lions!!!!

Success
Finally the Sugar CRM is working thanks to advice from a legend in Australia and guidance from a Kiwi......
With it up and running I am beginning to see how potentially powerful
this could be for our organisation....tracking students, donars, people
interested in joining...anyone.
Yesterday was a glorious day, a good time at church followed by a great
game of football with the new 40 days students. It was a great game
lots of goals and only a couple of nasty challenges!! It is funny
because sometimes the most "holy" people in everyday life have a little
aggressive side that only comes out on the football field!!
My sister is down visiting, it is strange seeing her with her pregnant
belly - it is like she is fat - but only gained fat in her belly not
anywhere else....maybe it is like a femanine beer belly!!
I moved 50 15kg boxes this afternoon up a flight of stairs and my
hamstrings are KILLING me - I guess it is because I am not exercising
enough right now!!!
That is about all for today as I have to shoot outside to play
volleyball as it is 25 degrees and loads of Bliss sunshine. to quote
Ronald McDonald..."I'm Lovin It."

A lazy Saturday
I love the weekend. Today was a classic example of how great a saturday can be. We woke up early to let some Kiwi friends (and others) in to watch the Lions vs All Blacks clash. The lions were unsurprisingly beaten. One thing that struck me while watching the game is how serious the opposition fans consider clashes against the Lions....which is a bit strange in my eyes. A team that meets together to play once every four years should be beaten by many teams. Oh well....Game 2 is next weekend we will see how we fair.
The contact management design has been kicked off - and I am actually looking forward to starting this project, it has been hindered slightly by not being able to get Mysql working...yet.
After an afternoon of Alias (almost finished season 1) and a jaunt through town I am relaxed and ready for sunday - one of the more chaotic days of the week!!!

Its Just Not Cricket
Another one day international over and this time the Aussies struck back...giving England a pretty good thrashing.....oh well all good things must come to an end!!
It was another beautful day yesterday topped of by a bbq, done by Yours
Truely - and the meat was not enitrely black when finished...wonders
never cease!!
I managed to get up this morning and spend a good amount of time with
JC - I am feeling good and am relatively ready to take on anything that
comes along
....except when I got to the office I realised I was looking at having
to try to design our own Contact Management System because all the off
the shelf stuff is too expensive or does not quite fit a global, cross
denominational, de-centralised organisation like ours...oh well.
Tomorrow is a day of shopping...much to my disgust - it is time for
Ulani and I to get cell phones with a joint contract as it is the only
thing we can get in both our names, to show next year when her VISA is
for renewal...if we are still here.
All Blacks vs Lions tomorrow morning at 08:10 BST....it should be a
good game - but the Lions do not play enough together so I think the
score will be 31-18 to the all (Fijian / Tongan) blacks

challenged but Apathetic
I have recently been challenged with the
same things as a good friend, to be more devoted at getting up in the
morning and having a quiet time. I am SO bad at getting up. I always
manage about 8 hours of sleep but still cannot get up....If anyone has
any suggestions for motivating me that would be great!!!
Work has been good - I have been help put a funding presentation
together for about 13 different projects. We present this project in 2
weeks and hopefully we can recieve the funds.
Ulani is looking at doing midwifery in London and so we need to go down
into London to meet with some university people to see if that is where
she should do it. The other choice is JCU in Australia....or the
SOlomon Islands - but I know Ulani is not too enthusiastic about the
latter one!!!
My little brother graduated University Yesterday with a 2:1 and honours
- the second highest degree one can get in the UK. I am proud of him...
and jealous right now he is on the Spanish Island of minorca soaking up
the sun and doing NOTHING.... that would be the life!

Coffee, sunshine and cell phones
I went for Coffee yesterday to de-brief
regarding our potential new work arrangement, with a more international
communications team MAYBE being set up.
It was a nice afternoon - sitting in Hitchin on an old town square with
a mint choc chip frappaccino...tough life. But after 4 days of solid
meetings last weeks the break and change of scenery was definately a
welcome one.
Spent a bit of this morning customising google news - it is great
you can have whatever kind of news you want showing, so i set up
a section to show me any news about Manchester United. It works great -
everyone should try it out- news.google.com
I had a soccer game last night - that was a lot of running - but my
team, a man down for most the game won convincingly - but after my
ice-skating mishap on saturday I was still hurting to play...oh well,
it is usually worth it!
My Cell phone contract runs out soon and I cannot decide whether to get
one that has TV streaming to it, one with a decent camera or a
pda/phone style handset...too many choices.
Today I have to prepare a presentation for fund raising, work out why
our Small Business Server will not let me install stuff on my
hard-drive, and learn a new content management system! Fun

Sweating...In Enlgand???
Who would have thought...?? What a wierd
weekend it has been. We have uninteruptted sunshine and up to 32
degrees, and England beat the Aussies at cricket - for the second time
in 8 days!!!!
Football was good yesterday - but it was far too hot for some people
and so they were fairly lathargic...I scored a couple of good goals -
which does not happen too often so that gave me enough to smile about
til I play again on tuesday!
Work this morning has been chaos with people waiting outside my office
before I arrived to let me know email and logins were not working. the
Logins is because we are chaging the policies for windows 9x users and
we asked everyone to tell us if they were using 9x and NO ONE came to
see us, so now they are having problems...typical!! The second problem
was power went out to our mail server...easy one to solve...turn the
plug on!
We have just started a new intranet for company information and
documents to be put on, and most people are using it - but some are
frustratingly slow to catch on to the fact that most the info they
phone me for is on there!! One day I hope this will change!!
I am beginning to know what it would feel like to live in a sauna
- as we work in an office with LOADS of (sealed) windows and no air
con! oh well. I have a picnic in the sun at lunch to look forward to
and a trip to starbucks for a meeting this afternoon, legendary!!!
Things are looking up

Weekend
It has been a strange weekend. A few
informal meetings about remote connectivity, but apart from that it was
relatively work free!!
Yesterday I made an unwlcome comeback to the ice-skating rink, this
potentially glorious occasion was marred by being tripped up by someone
and hitting my head on the ice.....I think warrents a lot of time
chilling today...in front of the cricket.
We began the mammoth task of watching "Alias"
with weekend - after a couple of episodes I am enjoying it but
realising this is going to take some serious devotion and should have
probably been done during the winter months not when it is 30 degrees
(Celsius) outside.
Today is one of the highlights of my week...Oval Football..stay tuned for the match report!!!

It starts at the very beginning
This is the beginning of my web-log. After a week of meetings with the
leadership team, I have had a fried brain from too much theory and not
enough tea. This along with sheer boredom and the site of a close
friend called bill (www.journalhome.com/billhutchison), inspired me to
start a blog.
I am hoping to push forward in remote connectivity over the next couple
of weeks as I am looking at how to close the gap between the so called
developed and developing nations. We are moving flats again,
this is the 4th time in 3 months....Ulani is getting tired of it- but
hopefully we will settle soon. Ulani is looking at studying mid-wifery
but is taking her time applying!! The weekend begins - a party with
a couple of friends, ice-skating, church and FOOTBALL just a few of the
items on the agenda!! I hope to sleep to recover from the meetings this
week!
