10/6/2007 - Dealing with Depression in adults and children
I have been dealing with depression for years. Its seems to get the worst at the darndest times. I have found different ways of copping with my depression. One of the most effective ways is calming myself down. Some of the ways I combat my depression is taking a bath, swinging on my porch swing, putting on a little makeup, or playing with my pets. Find something that you enjoy doing to help keep your mind occupied. I have had periods of time that I have taken antidepressants. Sometimes the antidepressants help and sometimes they don't help at all. Sometimes therapy is needed to combat depression and to get to the root of the depression. Millions of people don't seek help for depression because of the stigma associated with mental illness. I am a firm believer that depression can cause you physical pain. If you don't feel good it makes it hard to even want to move around.

Children can suffer from depression and many go undiagnosed. Children as they reach adolescence, have to deal with so many pressures. They deal with peer pressure, bullying, stereo typing, low self esteem, low self confidence, and many other pressures. Some children have good luck with antidepressant medications and/or therapy. I think the important issue is to get to the root of the problem. The only way a parent can get to the root of the problem is putting their selves in the child's place. A child needs lots of support dealing with depression. It takes a lot of patience to be able to get to the point that the depression doesn't overshadow everything else. Recurrences of depression can happen at anytime without any warning. Yelling or screaming at a child while there dealing with depression only decreases there moods and increases the depressing symptoms. Be sure to get help for your child dealing with depression.

Some symptoms of depression are  feelings of hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness,  and extreme irritability.

If you have symptoms of depression please see your doctor or health care provider. The purpose of this blog is to provide some information on depression, not to take the place of a doctor or health care providers advice.
