Can your lip gloss do this? - 4:47 PM, 1/12/2006

Who knew that lip gloss was way more than just cute!  Several of our favorite lip gloss makers are giving us something to smile about besides the occasional strawberry flavored smooch.

Sephora sells the "think Pink" lip gloss and proceeds from this $10 gloss go to the Big Bam Foundation, which provides mammogram treatments and surgeries to uninsured and underinsured women under the age of 40.

Platinum Pinks Lip Gloss Palette

Estee Lauder Co., which initiated an annual breast cancer awareness campaign in 1992, has expanded it this year to include products from nearly a dozen of the brands it owns, like Origins and Prescriptives.

This means if we buy Bobbi Brown Cosmetics pink shimmer lip gloss ($18); Clinique pink shimmering face palette $26.50; Estee Lauder pink lipsticks ($20 and $22)

we're getting way more than shiny lips!  We're actually giving other women hope for a cure through the proceeds of these cosmetics.

Hey, we're gonna buy this stuff anyway, why not get the stuff that really counts!

Not practical........in fact out of character.......but fun!! - 10:00 AM, 12/8/2005

mail bag...

Donna-
I am attaching a picture of our home-made marshmallow shooters.  The shooters use 1/2" pipe and connectors.  We make them with the thick walled pipe for extra durability.  For each shooter you need two elbows, two connectors, two caps, and two T's.  You need approximately 30 inches of pipe.  Cut the pipe into the following lengths (a total of 7 pieces cut):  9 1/2", 6 1/2", 3 1/2", 3 1/2", 3 ", 2 1/2 ", 1 1/2 ".  Put all pieces together as shown in the attached photo.  Do not glue them, but do push them together tightly.  Place your hands on the 3 1/2" pieces (as if you were holding a machine gun).   Place a mini marshmallow in the end of the 3" piece.  Blow into this piece with a short forceful burst of air (think of playing the trumpet) and the marshmallow will fly out of the barrel.  If you keep your fun on the grass and not the driveway, the sprinklers will dissolve the marshmallows.  Paint the shooters with glow-in-the-dark paint for extra fun after dark!

Good Luck! <<...>>
Judy

How far can we trade up? For a house? - 12:38 PM, 12/2/2005

It all started here.

I traded Brant a blue highlighter for his red dry erase marker.

Could we trade this for something better?

Who'd a thought!

We traded the marker for a thousand watt lightbulb!

then we traded up our lightbulb for a cucumber-melon candle...mmmmmm!

For the candle we traded up to an antique amoire....

hey, they were moving and were gonna throw it away!

We didn't even have the TRADE the amoire to get the airplane thingy.

It's some kind of hook off the back of it and the guys were all freakin out about it like it was big stuff. It's called an arresting gear hook from some kind of fighter plane.

And for the hook we traded to a working dell laptop computer.

It needs a battery soon but still works.

The owner says she's getting a new one for Christmas and doesn't want this one!

Cool!

We'll keep trading up as all the emails come in.

And to think it all started with a blue highlighter!

help!!! get some, give some - 7:33 AM, 11/23/2005

If you NEED HELP and you're in charge of cooking this year (maybe for the first time) have this number handy.  It's the USDA Turkey Hotline:  888.674.6854

If you can GIVE HELP to someone who is really in need, please drop off blankets or sweaters at WAY-FM or First Presbyterian Church downtown West Palm (Olive and Dixie).  Broward and Miami-Dade counties have homeless shelters and Palm Beach County does not.  48 degrees does not sound  that bad?  If you're sleeping outside it is.  Please help if you can.

For $17 you can print out a book of these stamps...but by all means, if you can find a cuter picture (and I doubt you can) use one of your choice!

This makes your Christmas card even MORE special.

If Wilma DOES make her way here... - 4:33 PM, 10/20/2005

So we've had lots of time to get ready:

*Gas tank full- check
*Canned goods for up to five days- check
*Bottled water- check
*Batteries, candles, matches...ugh...I forgot the matches.  Oh well, but see?  There's still time to get to the store!

From my friend Nancy:

...Ever notice how everything associated with getting ready for a hurricane is so heavy?  Shutters, bottled water, canned foods (by the case)....

Practical help to make better dinners...QUICKLY!!! - 8:03 AM, 10/12/2005

So the other day (Sat) I walked into Publix to discover "Aprons" meals.  The cook is in a booth at the front of the store creating a yummy dish for dinner.  The recipe is right there for the taking and so are ALL of the ingredients, utensils, pots and pans...everything you might need to make a great meal at home...even the directions!

So I don't need the other stuff, just the ingredients. So we just kind of grab the stuff and go home to begin the creation.  Three of us, Richie, Mercedes and I, made the most amazing dinner...I mean it was like something out of a high end restaurant!  And it was about $14 (mainly because the almonds were almost $4.00 by themselves.  This is really closer to a ten dollar meal!

Here's the link.

Let me know how it turns out!

Practical help from Alice ....find out Monday if the melted crayon came out. - 9:02 AM, 10/7/2005

Environmentally Friendly Household Cleaning Recipes

Removing crayon, pencil or ink from upholstery:
To remove pencil, crayon or ink marks from upholstery, use dry baking soda. Use a hairbrush or similar brush to rub baking soda and remove the marks.

Floor cleaner:  Mix 1 cup white vinegar with 2 gallons hot water. For greasy floors, add ¼ cup washing soda and 1 tablespoon vegetable-oil-based soap to the above mixture. To add shine, add a bit of skim milk.

Mildew Remover:To remove mildew from bathtubs, bathroom curtains and tile, make a mixture of
one-half cup vinegar, one-half cup of Borax cleaning detergent, and 2 cups of water. Pour it on the dirty areas and let it sit for a few minutes, and then scrub with a cloth. If mildew is still visible, use the mixture twice.

Tub and Tile Cleaner:Mix ½ tsp. Washing Soda, 1 tsp. Borax, ½ tsp. Vegetable-Based Liquid Soap, 3 tbs. Vinegar, and 2 c Hot Water in a spray bottle. Apply to the desired area and scrub. If spray nozzle clogs, use less washing soda and borax.

Coffee and chocolate stains: To remove coffee and chocolate stains, mix one teaspoon of white vinegar in one quart of cold water. Sponge on stain and wipe clean.

Mailbag!! - 9:05 AM, 9/26/2005

Hello,

What is the name of the website you mentioned on the air last week, to pass on used free things to one another?

Thanks

Alison

Hi Allison:

It's www.freecycle.org - then you have to become a member after deciding in which city you want to be a member.  It's a terrific site.  We located a sleeper sofa and a hot tub!  This is just the motivation we needed to clean out the garage.  Especially with many hurricane evacuees in our area there are lots of people who might need some used but good household items!
