9/20/2017 - Are You Looking for Good Chicken Coop Plans?
You’re now looking seriously at acquiring a mess of live chickens and though you haven’t ever done this kind of thing before, you know the benefits, and maybe you have a friend who owns a restaurant and you’ll be able to trade a few birds for a few fine meals. They actually make great pets for some people, and their personalities may be a bit muted, but they have become more compatible companions to these people than other creatures like turtles or basset hounds. However, they still aren’t recommended for apartment use.
But if you’re going to get more than a couple of chickens, you’ll need to either look around for chicken coop plans, in order to construct by yourself what will be sufficient, or otherwise check at what is available around you so that you can purchase chicken coops for sale at the local farm store’s bulletin board, in your regional pennysaver type classified newspaper, or even on the trade board at your local supermarket.
If you’re looking to either purchase or construct a hen house you will want one with lots of windows and doorways to give the creatures a comfortable atmosphere connected with the outdoors, which will keep them healthy and contribute to a natural growth and a happier bird. We can no longer construct or sell with good conscience those coops which confine the creatures to a hellish space until they die, so make sure that the birds have enough room to move around comfortably. Free range is still the best, but if you had the ability to have your chickens running around, you wouldn’t need a coop to keep them safe.
You want the coop to be sturdy enough to protect your fowl during the nighttime. Look around for coops that have been fitted with heavy gage wire mesh at all the openings and doorways; you’ll want it to be able to keep out small predators like rats (if you live in an urban area or next to a body of water), foxes, raccoons, stray dogs and other varmints that you can’t easily control.
If you’re going to be building the coop yourself, the main principle that you have to take into mind in the architecture of the device is to have a floor that would be relatively easy to clean with a spraying device, sloping towards the doorway; this results in less of a problem in puddling which can create a setting for disease carrying insects and bad water.
Make sure that a proper aeration is guaranteed to prevent the creation of ammonia and moisture that can amass in the walls of the contraption. If you don’t do this, the output, i.e. the eggs, will be greatly reduced and your chickens will not be at their prime health.
