Right after our visit to the mint, we headed for the Forks.That's a National Historical Site, no less. It mainly consists of small shops spread over two buildings and a few train carriages. It's right behind the VIA Rail station, if you ever go there by train. The shops are generally interesting. No chain stores! Yet most of the merchandise is aimed at tourists, so don't expect to get your groceries there.

The main building includes an international food court, where, spread over several days, I've tried Korean, Chilean, Ukrainian, Thai, and other cuisines. It's all very good stuff, but it does wreak havoc on your budget. There are several interesting stores there, including one that sells really interesting Ukrainian souvenirs. Yet, overall I've seen just one too many signs there on sale, that said 'Parking only for the Dutch', etc. That's one of the disadvantages of being in a country that attracts so many European immigrants. You're bound to find that sort of stuff.

The other building includes Tourist Information with a small display of ... well, stuff ... from the different regions of Manitoba. It also features a year-round Christmas shop, something we in the Netherlands don't have... I wonder why North Americans put up with it. In the basement there's an antiques market. The prices where prohibitive, but it was very interesting. Over here by antiques, you mean stuff that's over 100 years old, and apparently in North America, the word also includes Elvis and Coca Cola memorabilia...

There were also a few shops in train carriages, including a candy store where my teeth almost dissolved by just looking at the candy. Besides that it was just a nice place to sit in the sun, by the river for instance. The Forks site is situated where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet, which is a spectacular enough site, hence the name. It's also the site of the first settlement in what's now Winnipeg.

The VIA Rail station isn't too interesting by the way. There is said to be a museum in there but I could never quite work out where to find it, and with the low number of trains passing thru, four a week perhaps?, there was never anybody on the scene who could tell me.
