Well, I cannot answer that question for you, but it might just be a crime... On January 19 a court in the Netherlands will hear a case of a man who turned himself in for conspiring to exploit slaves... by eating chocolate. This is someone who works for a consumer show on TV, of course, and does this in a bid to get the truth out. His case was first ignored, but after going thru all the proper channels and collecting witness testimonies, the court will have to hear him.
The problem is said to be cacao beans from Ivory Coast (or Cote d'Ivoir as some English-speakers insist). Because they are of inferior quality, and often involve slave labor, they are very cheap. Most chocolate manufacturers mix them in with better beans, so they can make their chocolate bars cheaper. This way there is no telling where the slave beans go, and it is estimated that in every bar of chocolate an average of three percent is the result of slave labor.
When it comes to the court case, the man on trial reasons as follows: Sometimes shipments of orange juice are intercepted because smugglers have dissolved cocaine in it. If that is the case, the entire shipment is considered to be 100% cocaine before the law. So if a bar of chocolate contains three percent slave produce, it should be considered 100% slave produce.
The court will probably acquit him, because if they condemn him, it could potentially mean disaster for chocolate importers, and they will not go down without putting up a fight in court themselves. Thus claiming valuable court time. It could also mean, many more people wanting to be tried for the same offense, which also takes up too much time in court. I wonder.
Of course, for the past three years he's also been trying Oprah Winfrey to draw some attention to the slave problem in the wonderful world of chocolate, but so far she hasn't responded.
I do know a guy who works in Madagascar and main exports over there are chocolates. The people who worked for him are natives and it didn't occurred to me that these people are slaves. What do people mean by slavery? People imported illegally to do cheap labour? I think the world will be wasting time focusing on slavery in the chocolate industry. Why not put a stop on paedophile? I once met a young boy in South Thailand who offered me sexual services for US10 a night. He was barely 12 years old.
Yeah, that too is slavery. There are indeed many forms of slavery. The people working in the cacao bean industry in Ivory Coast are also usually children, who don't get paid a nickel and get beaten up or killed when trying to escape. It's so difficult to decide what to focus on, eh? I too think that no effort will be enough to change anything, and yes it's easier to stop these pedophiles who travel to Thailand to abuse children there.
Oh well, there are so many futile and even foolish initiatives out there. Over here in Amsterdam there's a Colombian guy who runs an organization that wants people from Northern Canada to take their huskies indoors, while every sane person know that doing just that is real animal mistreatment.
I am happy to report that we got a little rain and it has helped dull all the fires a bit and given the fire fighters a much needed break from the awful heat and action. Our garden is rejoicing at last, but we need a deluge if we are going to crack this drought.
I would happily bag up, some of this hot, hot weather and burning sun and send it your way if I could work out a way. And you could send over some buckets, of lovely h20 for me. Take care and thanks for your welcome comment. Love and ((((hugs)))) from Dawnie.
No, I haven't returned to MySpace. This acquaintance goes back eleven years.
